Chapter 15 - The Boardroom Betrayal

At 7:00 p.m., every surviving member of the Falcone Global board entered the twenty-ninth-floor conference room.

Samuel Reyes’s chair remained empty.

Lorenzo sat at the head.

Evelyn sat to his right.

That alone caused whispers.

Secretaries did not sit at the board table.

Temporary trustees did.

Diana stood near the presentation screen.

Claire sat beside federal counsel.

Margaret remained outside with Adrian.

Lorenzo opened the meeting.

“Before anyone asks, yes. The reports are real.”

A board member named William Harper shifted uneasily.

“Which reports?”

“All of them.”

Silence.

Lorenzo continued.

“For years, Falcone Global concealed financial relationships and legacy entities that should have been dismantled long ago.”

Several directors began speaking.

Lorenzo raised one hand.

They stopped.

“My father built this company. He also built systems outside it that I will not defend.”

Evelyn watched faces.

Shock.

Fear.

Calculation.

One man looked toward the exits.

She wrote his name down.

Lorenzo said, “Effective tonight, we are cooperating fully with federal investigators.”

Chaos.

Two directors stood.

One demanded outside counsel.

Another called it corporate suicide.

Evelyn kept watching.

Then the door opened.

Victor Caruso walked in.

No invitation.

No surprise on his face.

Two board members immediately stopped talking.

Evelyn noticed.

Allies.

Victor smiled.

“Apologies for being late.”

Lorenzo did not move.

“You’re not a board member.”

“No.”

“Then leave.”

Victor looked at Evelyn.

“But she is?”

“Today, yes.”

That smile again.

“Remarkable.”

Victor took an empty seat.

Nobody stopped him.

Interesting.

He placed a folder on the table.

“You should read this before voting on Mr. Falcone’s future.”

William Harper opened it.

Copies of Lorenzo’s birth records.

Old financial files.

Documents designed to humiliate.

“This proves nothing relevant to company governance,” Evelyn said.

Victor looked amused.

“You’ve become confident.”

“I’ve become tired.”

He leaned back.

“Lorenzo Falcone is not Giovanni Falcone’s biological son.”

The room erupted again.

Lorenzo waited.

Then said, “Correct.”

Silence.

Victor blinked.

He had expected denial.

Lorenzo continued.

“My father knew. My mother knew. The legal succession documents were executed with full knowledge.”

The humiliation weapon disappeared instantly.

Victor’s smile faded.

Evelyn almost admired Lorenzo.

Truth was difficult to blackmail.

Victor recovered.

“Blood mattered to Giovanni’s partners.”

“Then they are welcome to leave.”

Another surprise.

Lorenzo looked around the room.

“I am not fighting to inherit my father’s private arrangements.”

Victor’s jaw tightened.

“I’m ending them.”

One board member stood.

“You can’t.”

Evelyn looked at him.

Frank Delaney.

The same man she had written down.

“Why not?” she asked.

He ignored her.

Lorenzo said, “Answer Ms. Carter.”

Frank looked uncomfortable.

“The exposure would ruin the company.”

“Or ruin people benefiting from undisclosed contracts,” Evelyn said.

He glared at her.

Victor smiled again.

“Careful, Evelyn. Power is new on you.”

“No.”

She opened her notebook.

“Power is new. Paying attention isn’t.”

She read.

“Frank Delaney approved six consulting payments through North Harbor-linked vendors.”

Frank’s face drained.

“William Harper met Victor twice in the last two months.”

William looked toward Victor.

“And board member Peter Sloan called Samuel Reyes seventeen times the week Margaret disappeared.”

The room went silent.

Evelyn closed the notebook.

“You all talked around me for three years.”

Nobody answered.

She looked toward Victor.

“So did you.”

Victor’s expression hardened.

Then lights flickered.

Adrian’s voice came through Lorenzo’s earpiece.

“Security breach.”

Lorenzo rose.

Victor remained seated.

Too calm.

The fire alarm sounded.

Evelyn thought instantly of the thirty-first floor.

A distraction.

“Bellweather,” she said.

Victor looked at her.

There.

Confirmation.

“He’s trying to destroy the server copies.”

Diana ran toward the door.

Lorenzo stopped her.

“No.”

Victor stood.

The side door opened.

Two men rushed in.

Not armed visibly, but moving fast.

Federal agents intervened.

Confusion erupted.

Victor walked calmly toward the rear exit.

Evelyn followed.

Lorenzo saw.

“Evelyn!”

Victor entered the service corridor.

Evelyn stopped at the doorway rather than chasing.

She called after him.

“Victor.”

He turned.

She held up the flash drive.

His eyes fixed on it.

The real drive.

Lorenzo’s face changed.

He had not known she carried it.

Neither had Victor.

Evelyn held it between two fingers.

“You spent fifteen years chasing this.”

Victor took one step back toward her.

“Give it to me.”

“No.”

“You don’t know what’s inside.”

“I know exactly what matters.”

She dropped it.

Victor moved instinctively.

Evelyn brought her shoe down.

Crack.

Plastic shattered.

Everyone froze.

Victor stared.

Lorenzo stared.

Then Evelyn said, “There are twelve copies.”

Victor’s face emptied.

“You…”

“Cloud servers. Federal custody. Diana’s attorney. Margaret.”

She looked at him.

“You were still thinking like it was fifteen years ago.”

Information no longer lived in one ledger.

Destroying one copy meant nothing.

Victor finally lost his composure.

“You stupid woman.”

Evelyn’s expression remained calm.

“No.”

She stepped aside as federal agents entered the corridor.

“Just the secretary.”

Victor was arrested before he reached the elevator.

Behind them, the boardroom remained in chaos.

But the battle was finished.

Almost.

Because when Evelyn returned to the table, Claire was gone.

On her chair lay a single note.

I’m sorry. There’s one thing Bellweather didn’t tell you.

Below:

Ask Margaret who Lorenzo’s biological father was.

Lorenzo read it.

His face went completely still.

The truth that had destroyed Victor’s leverage had opened another question.

And this one was not about a company.

May you like

It was about Lorenzo himself.
