Chapter 5 - The Man Behind the Accident

Maxwell refused to believe it.
"Owen saved my life."
Daniel shook his head.
"That's what made him perfect."
The evidence showed payments from an offshore account to Owen days before the crash.
Martha watched Maxwell absorb the betrayal.
Owen had protected him for seventeen years.
He had driven Martha and Maxwell out of Rourke House during Phase Two.
He had apparently risked everything.
Why?
They confronted him privately.
Owen did not run.
He sat in Maxwell's office and looked at the evidence.
Then he said, "I wondered when you'd find it."
Maxwell's voice was low.
"You cut the brake line?"
"No."
"Then explain the money."
Owen looked at Daniel.
"Your brother knows."
Daniel frowned.
"I don't."
"Your father paid me."
Silence.
Their father, Patrick Rourke, had died two years earlier.
Owen explained.
Patrick had discovered Victor's criminal operations before his death.
He secretly hired Owen to collect evidence.
The offshore payments were funding for that investigation.
"So who sabotaged the SUV?" Martha asked.
Owen looked at her.
"Adrian Vale."
"But Mercer found—"
"Vale wasn't working only for Victor."
Maxwell stared.
"Who else?"
Owen hesitated.
"Your father."
The room went silent.
Maxwell's expression hardened.
"My father was dead before the crash."
"Yes."
Owen placed an old letter on the desk.
Patrick Rourke had known Maxwell intended to dismantle the criminal side of the family business.
He supported him.
But he also feared Victor.
Before dying, Patrick created a secret contingency plan.
Evidence would be released if anything happened to Maxwell.
Someone discovered the plan.
That person was Vale.
Vale sold the information to Victor.
But he also had his own motive.
Money.
He had been stealing from Rourke medical foundations for years.
Maxwell's audit would expose him.
The crash solved two problems.
Victor would gain corporate control.
Vale's theft would remain hidden.
"Victor didn't order it?" Martha asked.
"No," Owen said. "But after it happened, he took advantage of it."
"And Daniel?"
"Vale arranged the false death."
Daniel stared.
"Why?"
"To control you."
Every lie had another lie beneath it.
Maxwell leaned against his cane.
"Where is Vale now?"
Federal custody.
But that night, news arrived.
Adrian Vale had agreed to cooperate.
His testimony confirmed almost everything.
Victor had not planned the crash.
But he had ordered Maxwell's continued medical suppression afterward.
Vale had manipulated Maxwell's medication.
Claire had facilitated access.
Owen had spent fourteen months quietly gathering proof.
The conspiracy finally made sense.
Almost.
There was one remaining question.
Why had Vale believed Maxwell would survive the crash?
Martha remembered Mercer's words.
The accident wasn't meant to kill him.
Vale answered during interrogation.
He had intended Maxwell to be injured badly enough to delay the audit.
Daniel's presence changed everything.
The crash became catastrophic.
Afterward, Victor saw an opportunity.
And Maxwell spent fourteen months imprisoned inside a body that might have recovered far sooner.
Weeks passed.
Then months.
Victor accepted a plea agreement carrying decades in prison.
Vale lost his medical license and faced criminal charges.
Claire entered a cooperation agreement.
Daniel returned publicly from the dead.
Providence exploded with headlines.
But Maxwell wanted no celebration.
He wanted to walk.
Martha returned to rehabilitation nursing.
She worked during the day and helped Maxwell in the evenings.
Their relationship changed quietly.
No dramatic declarations.
No sudden promises.
Just dinners that lasted longer than necessary.
Hands touching.
Silences that felt comfortable.
One night Maxwell walked across the library without his cane.
Martha stood on the opposite side.
"Come on."
"I don't need encouragement."
"You absolutely do."
"I run a shipping company."
"And you're currently losing an argument with twelve feet of carpet."
He smiled.
Then walked.
One step.
Another.
Another.
He reached her.
Martha's eyes filled.
"You did it."
Maxwell looked down.
"I'm standing."
"You've been standing for weeks."
"Not like this."
"No."
She smiled.
"Not like this."
He touched her cheek.
"Martha."
Her breath caught.
"What?"
"I've been trying not to do something."
"For how long?"
"Months."
"That sounds exhausting."
"It is."
"What thing?"
He kissed her.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Martha froze for half a second.
Then kissed him back.
When they separated, Maxwell looked almost uncertain.
It was strange seeing uncertainty on him.
"I should have asked."
"Probably."
"I'm sorry."
"Do you want to ask now?"
A smile appeared.
"May I kiss you?"
Martha pretended to consider it.
"Maybe."
He laughed.
Then she kissed him.
For the first time since entering Rourke House, Martha forgot about secrets.
But secrets were not finished with them.
The following morning, Daniel arrived.
He carried a sealed envelope.
"This came for you."
Maxwell opened it.
Inside was an old photograph of Patrick Rourke.
Maxwell's father.
Standing beside a woman Martha didn't recognize.
On the back:
Ask Claire why your father really died.
Maxwell stared at it.
"My father had a heart attack."
Daniel looked grim.
"Maybe he didn't."
Martha felt the old dread return.
Maxwell picked up his cane.
"Where's Claire?"
Daniel's answer came quietly.
"She's gone."
Again.
But this time, she had left one thing behind.
A handwritten confession.
And the first line changed everything.

Patrick Rourke did not die naturally. I know because I was in the room.
