Chapter 6 - The Woman Waiting in the Tailor Shop

Isabella Moretti didn't look like a monster.

That was perhaps the most frightening thing about her.

She sat calmly beside the cutting table when we arrived.

Noah stopped in the doorway.

“Mother.”

Twenty years of grief existed inside that single word.

Isabella looked at her son.

For one moment, the powerful woman disappeared.

She was simply a mother seeing her child again.

“Noah.”

He didn't embrace her.

“Why?”

She lowered her eyes.

Because the truth was different again.

Isabella hadn't created the corruption.

Gabriel had.

She had discovered it and secretly moved money to prevent him from accessing it.

Elena misunderstood portions of the records.

Gabriel exploited that misunderstanding.

He turned both women against each other.

Then convinced each that disappearing was the only way to protect their children.

For decades, Gabriel had survived because everyone possessing part of the truth believed someone else was the enemy.

Noah placed the ledger beside Isabella.

“Then prove it.”

She did.

Account numbers inside the ledger matched records she had preserved.

Gabriel's signature appeared beneath shell companies.

The evidence was finally complete.

By morning, investigators had everything.

Gabriel tried to disappear.

This time he failed.

There was no dramatic gunfight.

No revenge.

No bodies.

Just financial records, testimony, warrants, and a man who had spent decades controlling people through fear finally losing control.

Weeks later, my mother walked into the tailor shop during business hours for the first time in twenty-three years.

Papa saw her.

Neither spoke.

Then he crossed the room.

She met him halfway.

Their embrace answered questions words never could.

I looked away.

Noah stood beside me.

“You're crying.”

“No.”

“You are.”

“Expensive observation.”

He smiled.

Then something occurred to me.

“Our date.”

“Yes?”

“We never had it.”

Noah checked his watch.

“Close the shop.”

“Absolutely not.”

“Sofia.”

“Noah.”

He sighed.

“What time do you finish?”

“Six.”

“I'll wait.”

“You have businesses to run.”

“I'll wait.”

And he did.

The most feared man in New York sat beside the window for three hours while I hemmed trousers.

At six, he took me to dinner.

No bodyguards at the table.

No expensive private club.

A tiny Italian restaurant in Brooklyn.

We talked.

Not about ledgers.

Not about crime.

Not about family secrets.

About ordinary things.

Favorite movies.

Bad childhood haircuts.

His hatred of olives.

My dream of designing my own clothing line.

At the end of dinner he walked me home.

At my door, Noah hesitated.

“May I kiss you?”

I smiled.

“Look at you asking permission like a normal person.”

“I'm improving.”

I leaned closer.

“Slowly.”

Then I kissed him.

And for one beautiful moment, there were no Morettis.

No secrets.

Just Noah and Sofia.

But when I entered my apartment, something was waiting beneath my door.

A photograph.

It showed Noah and me leaving the restaurant minutes earlier.

On the back were three words.

May you like

Gabriel wasn't alone.
