Chapter 5 - The Secret Behind Gabriel’s Wheelchair

Penelope woke at 2:13 a.m. to breaking glass.

She had moved temporarily into the Moretti mansion after the attack, occupying a guest room on the second floor.

Her door opened.

Gabriel entered.

“Get dressed.”

“What happened?”

“Security breach.”

Gunfire echoed downstairs.

Penelope's blood froze.

Gabriel held a handgun.

“Service stairs. Marco is waiting.”

“What about you?”

“I’m staying.”

“No.”

“Penelope.”

“No.”

He stared at her.

She grabbed her nursing bag.

“You want me gone? Come with me.”

Another explosion shook the mansion.

Gabriel cursed.

They moved into the corridor.

Smoke drifted upward.

Marco appeared.

“East entrance compromised.”

“How many?”

“Eight, maybe ten.”

“Dominic?”

“Probably.”

Gabriel handed Penelope to Marco.

“Take her.”

Penelope grabbed Gabriel’s wheelchair.

“I swear to God, Moretti, if you try sacrificing yourself—”

A bullet struck the wall.

Marco returned fire.

They retreated toward a reinforced safe room.

Then Penelope heard crying.

A young maid named Sofia was trapped downstairs.

Penelope turned.

“She's still inside!”

“Penelope!”

She ran.

Gabriel shouted after her.

She ignored him.

Sofia was crouched behind a marble pillar.

Penelope reached her.

“Come on!”

A masked attacker entered.

Gabriel appeared behind them.

He fired once.

The attacker dropped his weapon.

Gabriel's wheelchair struck broken glass and tipped.

He fell.

Another attacker emerged.

Penelope screamed.

Gabriel tried reaching his gun.

Too far.

The attacker raised his weapon.

Then something extraordinary happened.

Gabriel planted both hands against the floor.

His right foot moved.

Then his left.

He forced himself upward.

Not smoothly.

Not strongly.

But enough.

Gabriel lunged.

He tackled the attacker.

Marco arrived seconds later and ended the fight.

Penelope rushed to Gabriel.

He was on the floor, breathing heavily.

“You moved.”

Gabriel looked at his legs.

“You stood without the bars.”

“I wasn't thinking.”

Penelope's eyes filled.

“That's exactly why you did it.”

His body had remembered what fear had convinced his mind was impossible.

Later, after security regained control, Penelope examined him.

No major injuries.

But Gabriel was staring at his legs differently.

For the first time, the wheelchair didn't look like a permanent sentence.

It looked temporary.

“I want to walk again,” he said.

Penelope smiled.

“Then we work.”

“No excuses.”

“No excuses.”

Gabriel reached for her hand.

But Marco interrupted.

“We captured one.”

Gabriel's face hardened.

The attacker talked quickly.

Dominic had planned everything.

But the final revelation was worse.

The original shooting eight months earlier had never been intended solely to remove Gabriel.

Dominic had manipulated Gabriel’s doctors afterward.

One physician had been paid to exaggerate the permanence of Gabriel's injury and discourage aggressive rehabilitation.

Penelope went pale.

“You mean…”

Gabriel understood.

Months of potential recovery had been stolen from him.

Dominic hadn't simply tried to kill him.

He had tried to imprison him inside his own body.

Gabriel's rage was terrifying.

“I'll kill him.”

Penelope stepped between Gabriel and Marco.

“No.”

“Move.”

“No.”

“He stole eight months of my life.”

“And you're going to give him the rest?”

Gabriel stared at her.

“If you become consumed by revenge, Dominic still controls you.”

“He deserves to die.”

“Maybe.”

Her voice softened.

“But you deserve to live.”

That stopped him.

Penelope crouched.

“Walk again. Build your life again. Be happy again.”

She touched his chest.

“That's how you beat him.”

Gabriel slowly lowered the gun.

Marco understood.

“Police already have enough evidence.”

Gabriel looked toward the sunrise beginning beyond the broken windows.

For most of his life, power meant making enemies afraid.

Penelope had shown him another kind.

The power to walk away.

“Give them everything,” Gabriel told Marco.

Every photograph.

Every financial record.

Every recording connecting Dominic and Victor Salerno to the shootings.

For the first time, Gabriel chose justice instead of vengeance.

It should have ended there.

But Dominic knew he was losing.

And desperate men were more dangerous than powerful ones.

The following afternoon, Penelope left the mansion for twenty minutes to retrieve medication.

She never returned.

Her abandoned car was found beside the highway.

The driver's door was open.

May you like

Her phone lay shattered on the pavement.

And on the passenger seat was a black rose.
