Chapter 7 - What Elias Died Protecting

They entered the Ferretti estate through the tunnel beneath the old garden wall.

Luca had discovered it at eleven and used it to sneak out.

Domenico apparently never knew he had found it.

For the first time in the entire night, Luca smiled.

“My father underestimated children.”

Hope crawled behind him.

“Seems like a family tradition.”

The estate was dark.

Domenico’s men controlled the main floors.

Cal remained outside coordinating trusted federal agents.

Hope and Luca moved through the underground corridor alone.

“You sure the vault is here?” Hope whispered.

“My father’s original office.”

They reached the lower level.

Luca opened a concealed door.

The office had been sealed for fifteen years.

Dust covered everything.

Hope looked around.

“Cheerful.”

“My father liked darkness.”

“Shocking.”

They searched.

No vault.

No keypad.

Nothing.

Hope remembered Rebecca’s words.

Rooms he wanted you to know.

“Maybe it isn’t in the office.”

Luca stared at the walls.

Then at an old family portrait.

Domenico.

Sofia.

Young Luca.

Young Elias.

Hope approached.

Elias stood beside his mother.

His hand rested on a small red toy boat.

“Red.”

“What?”

“The red door.”

Hope removed the portrait.

Behind it was a small indentation shaped like a key.

The brass key.

She inserted it.

A section of wall moved.

Behind it:

A biometric scanner.

A keypad.

Luca laughed softly.

“Elias.”

Hope touched the screen.

It activated.

ENTER MEDICAL SEQUENCE.

Cal had already identified likely numbers from her records.

6-14-23-7.

Six surgeries.

Fourteen minutes.

Twenty-three, Elias’s age when he first discovered Rebecca’s letters.

Seven, the number of the field hospital where he died.

Hope entered them.

ACCESS GRANTED.

The wall opened.

Inside was a vault.

Shelves of ledgers.

Hard drives.

Photographs.

Weapons.

Cash.

Decades of secrets.

And in the center, a small table.

On it sat an envelope.

HOPE.

She froze.

Luca saw it.

“Take it.”

Her hands shook.

Inside was a letter.

Hope,

If you found this, I’m sorry I didn’t get the chance to tell you myself.

Her eyes blurred.

I spent months wondering what you would think of us. Maybe nothing good. Fair enough.

Hope laughed through tears.

Luca looked away.

She continued reading.

Rebecca wanted you free of this family. She was right. But being free of us should have been your choice, not a lie forced on you.

I planned to meet you when I came home. I wanted to do it somewhere ordinary. A diner maybe. Luca hates diners, so naturally I would have brought him too.

Hope covered her mouth.

If I don’t come home, know this: you were not the reason I died. I was already in this fight before I found you. Finding you only gave me one more reason to finish it.

And if Luca is reading over your shoulder, tell him to stop.

Hope looked at Luca.

He stepped backward.

“I wasn’t.”

“You were.”

“I can read fast.”

She almost laughed.

Then she read the final lines.

Hope, I don’t know whether blood makes people family. I think choices do.

If you ever choose us, I hope we deserve it.

—Elias

Hope stood in silence.

Luca’s eyes were wet.

“He would have liked you.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I do.”

A voice came from the doorway.

“So sentimental.”

Domenico.

Luca spun.

Too late.

Domenico held a gun.

Two men stood behind him.

“Step away from the ledger.”

Luca moved between Domenico and Hope.

Domenico laughed.

“You always did stand in the wrong place.”

“You murdered Elias.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He was going to destroy everything.”

“He was your son.”

“He was weak.”

Luca attacked.

The gun fired.

Hope screamed.

Luca fell.

Blood spread across his shoulder.

Domenico kicked him aside.

Hope rushed forward.

Gun pointed at her.

“Don’t.”

She stopped.

Domenico grabbed the ledger.

“You know, Rebecca begged me not to hurt you.”

“Where is she?”

“Closer than you think.”

A gun cocked behind Domenico.

Rebecca stood in the hidden doorway.

Older than Hope remembered.

Hair streaked with gray.

Hands steady around a pistol.

“Put it down, Domenico.”

Hope forgot how to breathe.

“Mom.”

Rebecca’s eyes filled.

“Hi, baby.”

Domenico turned slowly.

“Rebecca.”

“Eight years.”

“You always were stubborn.”

“So is she.”

Hope almost smiled.

Domenico tightened his grip on the ledger.

“You won’t shoot.”

Rebecca’s hand did not move.

“You’ve spent thirty years assuming women won’t do difficult things.”

Domenico smiled.

“That’s because most don’t.”

Rebecca fired.

The bullet hit the ledger from his hand.

Luca tackled Domenico.

Hope went for the gun.

The room erupted.

Domenico struck Luca’s injured shoulder.

Luca dropped.

Hope grabbed Domenico’s wrist.

He was stronger.

Much stronger.

But Hope knew anatomy.

She rotated.

Pressure.

Leverage.

The gun fell.

Rebecca kicked it away.

Domenico slammed Hope against the vault wall.

Pain exploded through her scars.

For a second, she was back in Syria.

Trapped metal.

Blood.

Couldn’t move.

Then Elias’s voice existed in her memory.

Did my brother eat dinner?

Hope drove forward.

Domenico stumbled.

Luca caught him.

Together, brother and sister forced him to the floor.

Sirens approached.

Cal entered with federal agents.

“Hands!”

Domenico stopped fighting.

He looked at Luca.

“You think this changes what you are?”

Luca breathed heavily.

“Yes.”

Domenico laughed.

“You’re a Ferretti.”

Luca looked at Hope.

Then Elias’s letter.

Then Rebecca.

“No.”

He looked down at his father.

“I’m Elias’s brother.”

Agents handcuffed Domenico.

Hope knelt beside Luca.

“Shoulder.”

“It’s fine.”

“You were shot.”

“I’ve had worse.”

“That is the stupidest sentence injured men say.”

Rebecca laughed through tears.

Hope turned.

Mother and daughter looked at each other.

Eight years stood between them.

Too much pain.

Too many questions.

Rebecca opened her arms slightly but did not move closer.

She let Hope decide.

Hope stared.

Then crossed the room.

Rebecca held her.

Hope did not forgive her.

Not yet.

But she held on.

Sometimes healing did not begin with forgiveness.

Sometimes it began by realizing the person you had buried was still warm in your arms.

Behind them, agents carried away boxes containing the history of Domenico Ferretti’s empire.

Luca watched quietly.

Cal approached.

“You know what happens next.”

“Yes.”

“Investigations.”

“Yes.”

“Your businesses.”

“I’ll cooperate.”

“Even if you lose them?”

Luca looked at Hope.

“I’ve lost enough people.”

Cal nodded.

Hope helped Luca stand.

He winced.

“You need a hospital.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“I hate hospitals.”

Hope raised an eyebrow.

“You’ve known me forty-eight hours and you’re already arguing about medical treatment?”

Luca looked at her.

“You’ve been my sister forty-eight hours and you’ve already assaulted our father.”

“Our father?”

Luca’s face softened.

“Right.”

“Your father.”

“Yes.”

Hope considered him.

Then smiled faintly.

“But Elias was ours.”

Luca’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“Ours.”

May you like

And somewhere beyond the shattered estate, morning began.
