Chapter 6 - The Woman Buried Without a Body

Leo remembered his mother's funeral.

Rain.

Black umbrellas.

His father's hand gripping his shoulder.

A closed coffin.

He had been twelve.

He never saw her body.

He never questioned why.

Until now.

“Where is she?” Leo demanded.

Adrian shook his head.

“The ledger only had payments.”

“To whom?”

“A private medical facility.”

Clara looked at Leo.

“For how long?”

“Twenty-three years.”

Leo felt sick.

His father had known.

Someone had been paying to keep Elena Rossi alive and hidden.

Nico traced the facility.

It had changed names three times.

The current location was two hours outside the city.

Leo and Clara drove there before dawn.

The building looked like a private rehabilitation center.

Inside, records showed a patient under another name.

Eleanor Rose.

Room 307.

Leo stood outside the door.

For perhaps the first time since Clara had known him, his hand trembled.

She touched his wrist.

“You don't have to go in alone.”

Leo looked at her.

Then opened the door.

An older woman sat beside a window.

Silver threaded through her dark hair.

She turned.

Leo knew immediately.

Not because he remembered her face.

Because she had Adrian's eyes.

The woman stared.

“Leonardo?”

Nobody called him Leonardo.

Not anymore.

Leo couldn't speak.

She stood slowly.

“My boy.”

His entire adult identity cracked.

Leo Rossi—the man feared across the city, the man who could order violence with a phone call—became twelve years old.

“Mom?”

Elena covered her mouth.

Then crossed the room.

Leo let her hold him.

Clara quietly turned away.

Minutes passed.

Eventually, Elena explained.

Raymond Bell had built his network decades earlier.

Antonio discovered it.

Elena discovered something worse.

Bell had police officers, judges, union leaders, and criminals working together.

She threatened to expose him.

Bell tried to kill her.

Antonio staged her death instead.

“He told me it would be temporary,” Elena said.

Tears filled her eyes.

“But then Antonio died.”

“And you stayed here?”

“Bell found me.”

Leo's jaw tightened.

“He told me if I contacted you, he'd kill both my sons.”

Elena touched Leo's face.

“I watched you from newspapers.”

Leo closed his eyes.

“All these years.”

“I am sorry.”

“No.”

His voice broke.

“You survived.”

Elena looked beyond him at Clara.

“And who is she?”

Leo turned.

Clara suddenly looked uncomfortable.

“My—”

He stopped.

Maid sounded ridiculous.

Investigator sounded incomplete.

Clara rescued him.

Elena smiled knowingly.

“Someone important.”

Leo didn't argue.

They moved Elena immediately.

Then came midnight.

Warehouse Twelve.

Vincent waited.

But Leo did not bring Clara helplessly.

She came by choice.

The Moretti family surrounded the exterior.

Nico's men controlled the eastern exits.

And Clara had already sent copies of Samuel's recordings to a federal prosecutor outside Bell's network.

Inside, Vincent stood beside the ledger.

“You brought her.”

Leo entered with Clara.

“I did.”

Vincent smiled.

“Good boy.”

Leo's expression hardened.

“You killed my father.”

Vincent's smile disappeared.

“Antonio chose his fate.”

“You murdered him.”

“I protected the system.”

“What system?”

“The one that made your family rich.”

Vincent laughed.

“You think your father was innocent?”

“No.”

Leo stepped closer.

“But he was my father.”

Vincent reached for his gun.

Clara saw it first.

“Leo!”

Gunfire erupted.

Leo dragged Clara behind a steel column.

Nico's men entered.

Vincent ran.

Leo pursued him through the warehouse.

They reached the upper catwalk.

Vincent turned with a pistol.

“Your father should have let Bell kill your mother!”

Leo froze.

Vincent smiled.

That hesitation was enough.

He fired.

The bullet missed Leo by inches.

Leo tackled him.

They crashed against the railing.

Vincent lost his weapon.

Leo grabbed him by the collar.

Below them waited a forty-foot drop.

Vincent laughed.

“Do it.”

Leo's fist tightened.

“You want to be your father? Kill me.”

Leo stared into the face of the man who had betrayed his family.

Then Clara's voice came from behind.

“Leo.”

He looked at her.

She shook her head.

“Don't give Bell another body to bury the truth with.”

Leo released Vincent.

Nico's men restrained him.

Vincent screamed.

“You're weak!”

Leo wiped blood from his mouth.

“No.”

He looked at Clara.

“I'm finished letting dead men decide who I become.”

The ledger was recovered.

Everything was there.

Bell's network.

Payments.

Murders.

Judges.

Police.

Politicians.

Enough evidence to collapse careers and send powerful men to prison.

But one page was missing.

The page containing Bell's personal accounts.

Without it, Bell could claim Vincent acted independently.

Clara searched the ledger.

“It's gone.”

Leo looked toward Vincent.

“Where is it?”

Vincent laughed.

“Bell has it.”

Leo's phone rang.

Raymond Bell.

Leo answered.

Bell's voice was calm.

“You've caused quite a mess.”

“It's over.”

“No.”

Bell chuckled.

“You have evidence against dead men and criminals.”

“We have you.”

“You have nothing.”

Then Bell said something that made Leo look at Clara.

“But I have Miss Hayes' mother.”

Clara went pale.

“My mother is dead.”

Bell laughed softly.

“Is she?”

The line disconnected.

Clara stood frozen.

Leo understood instantly.

Samuel Hayes had not been the only parent whose death had been staged.

May you like

And the final secret was waiting inside Bell's house.
