Chapter 14 - The Trap Inside Alexander’s Study

Adrian spotted the reflection first.
A brief flash outside the nursery window.
Vincent’s team reached the lawn within seconds.
No shooter.
No weapon.
Only footprints leading toward the greenhouse.
Julian had been watching.
Or someone working for him.
Adrian refused federal protection at first.
Sebastian changed his mind with one sentence.
“I already lost you once.”
Adrian looked at him.
Then nodded.
The next day Julian sent Alexander a message.
COME TO YOUR STUDY AT 9:00 PM. ALONE. OR THE ARCHIVE GOES PUBLIC UNEDITED.
That threat confused me.
“Wouldn’t publishing it hurt Julian?”
“Yes,” Isabella said.
“But also dozens of innocent people.”
The archive contained medical records, family secrets and private information collected for blackmail.
Dumping everything online would destroy lives.
Alexander had no intention of going alone.
The study was searched repeatedly.
No explosives.
No obvious surveillance.
At nine, Alexander entered wearing a concealed audio transmitter.
Vincent watched from the adjoining security room.
I stood beside him.
Nothing happened.
9:02.
9:05.
9:08.
Then Alexander’s computer turned on by itself.
Julian appeared on-screen.
“Hello, cousin.”
Alexander sat.
“You’re running out of tricks.”
“No. I’m running out of patience.”
“What do you want?”
“Marcus.”
“Why?”
“He can authenticate the archive.”
“So?”
“So if he disappears, prosecutors spend years proving what’s real.”
“You’re asking me to trade a man’s life.”
“I’m asking you to choose your family.”
Alexander leaned back.
“My family survived you.”
Julian smiled.
“Did it?”
Another screen activated.
Live video.
Sebastian and Adrian were inside a federal safe house.
The feed showed them through a window.
Alexander’s expression changed.
“How are you seeing that?”
“I told you. Your danger was never inside the estate.”
Julian had compromised someone in law enforcement.
Again.
“Marcus for their location remaining secret,” Julian said.
“You already know the location.”
“I know one location.”
The camera zoomed toward Adrian.
“I know where Isabella is too.”
Alexander’s face hardened.
“And Clara.”
My blood froze.
Vincent turned toward me.
The lights inside the security room shut off.
A hand grabbed me from behind.
I screamed.
Vincent spun.
A masked man struck him with a metal bar.
He fell.
I fought.
The attacker covered my mouth.
I bit him.
He cursed.
I ran for the door.
Another man stepped into the hall.
I backed away.
The study door opened.
Alexander appeared.
Everything happened quickly.
He drove into the second attacker, knocking him into the wall.
I grabbed the security alarm.
Vincent, bleeding but conscious, tackled the first man.
Guards arrived.
Both attackers were restrained.
Alexander came directly to me.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
He touched my face.
“Clara.”
“I’m okay.”
His hands were shaking.
I had never seen Alexander’s hands shake.
The study computer continued playing Julian’s voice.
“How touching.”
Alexander turned.
The screen remained active.
“You planned this.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because now you understand.”
“Understand what?”
“What it feels like to have something you can’t afford to lose.”
Alexander looked at me.
Julian laughed.
“Your father never learned. Maybe you will.”
The screen went black.
Police identified the attackers.
Neither knew Julian’s location.
They had received instructions through encrypted messages.
But one possessed a storage-unit key.
Inside that unit authorities found passports.
Cash.
Weapons.
And maps.
One map marked the Romano estate.
Another marked Keller’s home.
Another Sebastian’s safe house.
The final map marked a small cemetery.
My mother’s cemetery.
I stared at it.
Why mine?
Alexander saw my face.
“He researched you.”
“Why?”
Nobody answered.
Then Vincent found a handwritten note inside the storage unit.
CLARA HAYES — leverage only if necessary. A.R. emotionally compromised.
Alexander read it once.
Then tore it in half.
I took the pieces from him.
“Don’t.”
“Don’t what?”
“Become what Julian expects.”
His jaw tightened.
“He threatened your mother’s grave.”
“He wants you angry.”
“He threatened you.”
“I’m standing here.”
“Because we were lucky.”
“No.”
I touched his hand.
“Because you chose to protect me without losing yourself.”
Something in his expression shifted.
For decades the Romano men had answered fear with power.
Threat with greater threat.
Loss with revenge.
Julian expected Alexander to do the same.
Instead, Alexander turned over every piece of the archive to federal authorities.
Unedited.
Under seal.
He gave investigators permission to examine Romano accounts.
Even the ugly ones.
Especially the ugly ones.
Sebastian protested.
“This could destroy us.”
Alexander answered quietly.
“Maybe whatever deserves to be destroyed should be.”
That decision broke Julian’s leverage.
No more secret archive.
No more threat of exposure.
For the first time, Julian had nothing Alexander needed to hide.
Which made him more dangerous.
Because a cornered man with no leverage left has only one thing to trade.
Violence.
At 2:13 the next morning, a final message arrived.
Not for Alexander.
For me.
HE WILL NEVER CHOOSE YOU OVER THE ROMANO NAME. COME SEE FOR YOURSELF.
Beneath it was an address.
The abandoned Romano textile factory in Queens.
I deleted the message.
Then Alexander’s phone buzzed.
He had received one too.
His said:
SHE WILL NEVER BELONG IN YOUR WORLD. COME PROVE ME WRONG.
Julian wanted both of us there.
And for the first time, I understood his real obsession.
He wasn’t trying only to destroy Alexander’s company.
May you like
He wanted to prove that every Romano eventually sacrificed love for power.
