Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Betrayed Us

I wanted the footage to be fake.
It wasn’t.
Mrs. Callahan walked into Adrian’s office at 4:07 a.m.
She entered the safe code.
Removed the ledger.
Left.
At 4:11, she drove away.
Adrian watched the footage twice.
“She betrayed you,” I whispered.
“Maybe.”
“You saw the same video.”
“Yes.”
“Then what part is confusing?”
“The part where Margaret has had access to that safe for fifteen years.”
I understood.
“If she wanted to betray you, why wait until tonight?”
“Exactly.”
We searched her room.
Nothing.
Then I noticed an envelope beneath the pillow.
My name was written across it.
Inside was a note.
Maya, trust me one last time. I know where Marcus is. I can end this, but only if he believes I brought him the ledger willingly. Do not follow me.
I looked at Adrian.
“We’re following her.”
“Yes.”
“So much for respecting instructions.”
“I respect intelligent instructions.”
We traced Mrs. Callahan’s car to an old Voss-owned restaurant closed for renovations.
Adrian insisted Evelyn remain at the estate.
This time I agreed.
Mostly.
Adrian and I entered through the kitchen.
Voices came from the dining room.
Mrs. Callahan stood beside a table.
Across from her sat an older man.
Marcus Voss.
Alive.
Beside him stood Richard Hale.
Richard was nearly seventy.
Silver hair.
Glasses.
The same face reflected in the old photograph.
Marcus opened the ledger.
“You always were loyal, Margaret.”
Mrs. Callahan smiled.
“To Vincent.”
Marcus’s expression changed.
Adrian stepped into the room.
“And so am I.”
Marcus slowly looked toward his nephew.
Then toward me.
“So Daniel’s little girl finally came home.”
I hated the way he said it.
“You arranged the job.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Adrian had something I needed.”
“The documents.”
“The key.”
Richard smiled faintly.
“You were always simply the messenger, Maya.”
Adrian moved slightly in front of me.
Marcus noticed.
“That’s interesting.”
“What?”
“The way you look at her.”
Adrian’s expression didn’t change.
Marcus laughed.
“History has a sense of humor.”
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?”
Marcus looked at Adrian.
“You haven’t told her?”
“Told me what?”
Adrian genuinely appeared confused.
Marcus opened the ledger to its final page.
There was a birth certificate.
Mine.
The father’s line had been blacked out.
Marcus slid another document across the table.
A laboratory report.
Old.
My name appeared beside another.
I read it.
Then stopped breathing.
PATERNITY PROBABILITY: 99.8%.
The listed father was Vincent Voss.
Adrian’s father.
I looked at Adrian.
His face had gone completely white.
“No.”
Marcus smiled.
“Yes.”
The room tilted.
If Vincent Voss was my biological father...
Adrian was my half brother.
Every confusing emotion I had begun developing toward him shattered instantly.
But Evelyn’s voice suddenly came from behind us.
“That report is false.”
Everyone turned.
She stood in the doorway.
“Maya’s father was not Vincent.”
Marcus frowned.
“You should have stayed hidden.”
Evelyn walked toward us.
“Vincent created that report.”
“Why?”
“To protect the real father.”
Richard’s confidence disappeared.
I looked between them.
“Who?”
Evelyn stared directly at Richard Hale.
Richard shook his head.
“No.”
“Yes.”
My stomach dropped.
Evelyn’s voice was steady.
“Richard is your biological father.”
Silence.
Richard backed away.
“That’s impossible.”
“You know it isn’t.”
The truth came apart rapidly after that.
Richard and Evelyn had once been together.
When Evelyn discovered his financial crimes, she left him.
Pregnant.
Daniel protected her.
Richard became obsessed with recovering both the evidence and the child he believed belonged to him.
Vincent fabricated the paternity report so Richard would believe Maya was a Voss and therefore untouchable without starting a war with Vincent.
It worked.
For years.
Then Vincent died.
Daniel died.
Laura hid me.
And everyone spent eighteen years living inside one lie designed to keep a little girl alive.
Richard stared at me.
“I’m your father.”
I looked at him.
“No.”
His face changed.
“Biologically—”
“Daniel Bennett was my father.”
I felt strangely calm.
“You’re a man who helped destroy my family.”
Richard had no answer.
Mrs. Callahan had secretly copied the ledger before bringing it.
The original evidence had already been sent to federal investigators and attorneys.
Marcus’s face changed when Adrian revealed that.
“You planned this.”
Adrian looked at Mrs. Callahan.
“She did.”
Sirens sounded outside.
For once, the ending wasn’t decided by violence.
It was decided by evidence.
Marcus and Richard had spent decades believing fear made them untouchable.
Paperwork proved otherwise.
Authorities arrived.
Richard looked at me once before being escorted away.
I felt nothing.
That surprised me.
Maybe biology mattered less when love had already decided the answer.
Marcus stopped beside Adrian.
“You think this ends with me?”
Adrian said nothing.
Marcus smiled.
“Ask your father why Daniel really died.”
Then he was gone.
I looked at Adrian.
“What does that mean?”
He stared toward the doors.
“I don’t know.”
But Mrs. Callahan did.
I saw it immediately.
“Margaret.”
She closed her eyes.
“There is one final recording.”
My heart sank.
“Where?”
May you like
“Vincent’s grave.”
And just when I thought eighteen years of secrets had finally run out, I learned the dead had saved one more.
