Chapter 17 - The Trap at Mercer Tower

Agents moved Sophie into the protected stairwell.

Grant wanted to go with her.

Agent Chen stopped him.

“We need you inside.”

“My daughter—”

“Is safer away from these windows.”

Mara appeared from the elevator with tactical officers despite every instruction Grant had given her.

He stared.

“I told you—”

“I ignored you.”

Before he could argue, she ran toward Sophie.

Their daughter threw herself into her arms.

Grant relaxed by a fraction.

Matthew sat against a desk while a medic treated the wound.

“It went through.”

The medic wrapped his shoulder.

“You’re lucky.”

Matthew laughed weakly.

“First time anyone’s said that tonight.”

Grant crouched beside him.

“Where is Daniel?”

“Building across the street.”

“We know.”

“No.”

Matthew shook his head.

“That shot came from across the street. Daniel isn’t there.”

Grant frowned.

“How do you know?”

“Because Daniel doesn’t trust distance.”

An alarm sounded.

Daniel’s voice suddenly came through the building speakers.

“Grant.”

Everyone froze.

Grant looked up.

Daniel continued:

“You really do make everything difficult.”

Agent Chen signaled her team.

“Building internal system compromised,” an officer whispered.

Daniel laughed over the speakers.

“Owen got weak. Matthew got greedy. Charles got guilty. Everyone forgets what Harbor was supposed to be.”

Grant stared.

“What?”

Daniel could apparently hear through security microphones.

“It was supposed to prove money makes morality optional.”

Grant frowned.

“That was Victor’s philosophy.”

“Exactly.”

Rebecca entered behind Mara.

Her face changed when she heard the voice.

“No.”

Grant looked at her.

“What?”

She whispered:

“Daniel isn’t Daniel Reeve.”

The speakers went silent.

Rebecca stared toward a security camera.

“I know who you are.”

A laugh.

Then Daniel replied:

“Hello, Aunt Rebecca.”

Grant felt cold.

“Aunt?”

Rebecca covered her mouth.

“Victor had another son.”

Matthew stared.

“What?”

“Older than Owen.”

Grant looked toward the speakers.

Daniel continued.

“My father always said Mercers took everything.”

Rebecca whispered, “David Hale.”

“Daniel Reeve was an identity.”

The security officer Grant trusted had been Victor Hale’s eldest son.

Owen’s half-brother.

Project Harbor was a family war Grant never knew he had inherited.

David spoke.

“Owen was supposed to reclaim what Charles stole from our father. Instead he became attached to you.”

Grant thought of two decades of friendship.

“Matthew was easier.”

Matthew looked ashamed.

David continued.

“He wanted money. Recognition. Predictable.”

“Go to hell,” Matthew muttered.

David laughed.

“The archive, Grant.”

“What archive?”

“Charles recorded everything. Names. Judges. Politicians. Executives. Victor’s original network.”

“What do you want with it?”

“Insurance.”

Grant understood.

David did not want money.

He wanted leverage over powerful people.

“Where is it?” Grant asked.

“Mara knows.”

Mara stepped forward.

“I don’t.”

“Your lullaby does.”

She looked at the music box.

Grant understood.

The encoded variations.

They had decoded Cafe Blue.

Charles.

Lodge.

Saint Orla.

There was another verse.

Sophie suddenly spoke.

“There’s one Mommy didn’t sing.”

Everyone turned.

“What?”

“The last part.”

Mara stared at her.

“Sophie…”

“When I was little, you sang more.”

Grant looked at his wife.

Mara went pale.

She remembered.

“I changed it before the crash.”

“What does it encode?” Grant asked.

She hummed.

Agent Chen wrote notes.

Matthew, surprisingly, deciphered first.

“Twelve. Seven. Thirty-one.”

Grant frowned.

“Numbers?”

Mara looked toward the old building blueprints on the wall.

“Floor twelve.”

“Room seven?”

“Locker thirty-one.”

Grant called building operations.

There was a records vault on the twelfth floor.

Daniel’s voice interrupted.

“Very good.”

Everyone froze.

He had heard.

“That’s enough.”

The lights died.

Emergency red lighting appeared.

Agents moved.

Grant grabbed Sophie.

Mara stayed close.

They headed for the stairwell.

David’s voice followed through speakers on every floor.

“Twelve.”

Grant realized.

“He wants us to go there.”

Agent Chen said, “Then we don’t.”

Matthew stood despite the medic.

“Yes, we do.”

Grant looked at him.

“What?”

“He’ll lock the building and burn the archive if cornered.”

“You know that?”

“I helped design the failsafe.”

Grant stared.

“You have got to be kidding.”

Matthew grimaced.

“I’ve had a bad year.”

They descended.

Floor twelve.

The records area was dark.

Locker thirty-one stood behind a mechanical wall.

Grant opened it with the key hidden beneath the ballerina base.

Inside:

Three encrypted drives.

Paper files.

And a video recorder.

Charles’s final archive.

Rebecca touched one drive.

“This can expose everyone.”

A voice came behind them.

“That’s why you’re giving it to me.”

David stood in the doorway.

No weapon visible.

But two men flanked him.

Federal officers had been diverted by a false emergency upstairs.

Grant moved in front of Sophie.

David smiled.

“Always the hero.”

“Take the drives.”

Mara looked at him.

“Grant.”

“Take them and leave my family.”

David shook his head.

“Not enough.”

“What?”

“Too many people know.”

Matthew stepped forward.

“So kill me.”

Everyone looked at him.

David smiled.

“That can be arranged.”

“Leave Sophie and Mara out.”

David studied him.

“You finally found courage after all.”

Matthew looked at Grant.

“Late is better than never.”

Grant almost smiled.

David reached for the drive.

Rebecca stepped between them.

“Your father would be ashamed.”

David’s face changed.

“My father died believing Charles stole his empire.”

“Victor destroyed his own family.”

“He built us.”

“He used you.”

David’s expression hardened.

Rebecca continued.

“He sent Owen to manipulate Grant. He turned you into an instrument. He kidnapped his own nephew.”

“You chose the Mercers.”

“I chose my children.”

“You abandoned your blood.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“You confuse blood with ownership.”

David raised his hand.

One of his men moved.

Then Owen’s voice came from the hallway.

“She’s right.”

Everyone turned.

Owen stood beside Agent Chen, wrists cuffed.

David stared.

“What are you doing here?”

Owen smiled sadly.

“Ruining Dad’s legacy.”

Agents flooded the corridor.

David stepped backward.

His men surrendered.

David looked around.

Then at Owen.

“You chose him.”

Owen glanced toward Grant.

“No.”

He looked at Sophie.

“I chose not to become Dad.”

David tried to run.

Agent Chen tackled him.

Seconds later it was over.

No explosion.

No final gunfight.

Just handcuffs.

Breathing.

The strange quiet that follows years of fear finally reaching a wall.

Grant looked at Mara.

She looked at Sophie.

Matthew sat against a filing cabinet, exhausted.

Rebecca cried silently.

Owen was escorted away.

Before leaving, he stopped beside Grant.

“I am sorry.”

Grant stared at him.

“I know.”

It was not forgiveness.

But it was truth.

Owen nodded.

“Take care of her.”

He meant Sophie.

Grant looked at his daughter.

“We both will.”

Mara took Grant’s hand.

The archive sat between them.

Enough evidence to expose Project Harbor.

Enough evidence to shake the Mercer empire.

Grant looked at Mara.

“What happens tomorrow?”

She gave him the faintest smile.

“We stop running.”

And the following morning, Grant Mercer walked into a packed press conference carrying twenty-seven years of family secrets.

This time, he told the truth.

May you like

All of it.
