Chapter 6 - What Her Mother Left Behind

Margaret Cole had been dead for years.

But dead people sometimes left the most dangerous secrets.

Zo opened his father's old records.

For two nights he barely slept.

Tessa refused to leave.

Together they searched through boxes stored in a secured room beneath the estate.

Finally, they found Margaret's name.

A payment.

A date.

And an address.

Tessa recognized it.

“My mother's storage unit.”

“You knew she had one?”

“I thought it was empty.”

It wasn't.

Inside the unit stood three boxes.

Clothes.

Photographs.

Letters.

And an old metal tin.

Tessa opened it.

Inside was a cassette tape.

Evan found an old player online.

That evening, they listened.

Margaret's voice filled the room.

Young.

Frightened.

Alive.

She described the night she found Antonio Rossi bleeding behind the restaurant.

She had seen the shooters.

More importantly, she had heard a name.

Victor Bellandi.

A rival businessman whose public empire had later become respectable.

Zo turned off the recording.

Tessa stared at him.

“Is he still alive?”

“Yes.”

“And he knows this exists?”

“He suspects.”

“That's why we're being watched.”

Zo nodded.

Tessa looked at the tape.

“So what happens now?”

“We end it.”

“How?”

“Without becoming the men they expect us to be.”

That surprised her.

Zo had changed.

Perhaps not completely.

Men like him did not become saints because one woman carried leftovers home.

But Tessa had forced him to see something he had forgotten.

Power could frighten people.

Or protect them.

The choice belonged to the person holding it.

Zo contacted attorneys.

Investigators.

Federal authorities through intermediaries.

The tape alone was old evidence, but it opened doors.

Financial records followed.

Witnesses appeared.

Victor Bellandi's respectable empire began cracking.

Then came the final move.

Bellandi requested a meeting.

Zo agreed.

Tessa hated the idea.

“It's a trap.”

“Probably.”

“And you're going?”

“Yes.”

“Then I'm coming.”

“No.”

She stared at him.

“Have we learned nothing?”

Zo sighed.

“You are exhausting.”

“You like me.”

The words escaped before either could stop them.

Silence.

Tessa's cheeks reddened.

Zo looked at her.

“Yes.”

Her expression changed.

He stepped closer.

“I do.”

“Zo…”

“I noticed when you skipped dinner because I notice threats. Then I kept noticing because…”

“Because?”

He struggled with the sentence.

Tessa waited.

“Because eventually you stopped being an anomaly.”

“What did I become?”

He looked into her eyes.

“Someone I couldn't stop looking for.”

Tessa kissed him.

Briefly.

Softly.

Then pulled away.

“Come back from the meeting.”

“I intend to.”

“That's not enough.”

Zo touched her cheek.

“For you?”

His voice softened.

“I'll make it enough.”

The Bellandi meeting took place in a hotel conference room.

No guns on the table.

No dramatic threats.

Only lawyers, recordings, and consequences.

Bellandi tried intimidation.

Zo didn't react.

“You think that maid changed you?” Bellandi asked.

Zo leaned back.

“No.”

“Then what did?”

Zo thought about Tessa kneeling beside spilled containers of food.

About Evan with a baseball bat.

About Lily asking whether her sister was in trouble.

“Perspective.”

Bellandi laughed.

But he stopped laughing when federal agents entered the lobby downstairs.

The investigation had already moved beyond him.

Zo had never intended to negotiate.

He had come only to keep Bellandi occupied.

By sunrise, warrants were being served.

The threat hanging over Tessa's family finally began to collapse.

Zo returned to the estate exhausted.

Tessa waited in the entrance hall.

She walked toward him.

“Is it over?”

“Yes.”

“Really?”

“As much as anything in my life is ever over.”

She stared at him.

Then slapped his chest.

“You scared me.”

“I noticed.”

She hit him again.

He caught her wrist.

Then she wrapped both arms around him.

Zo froze.

He was accustomed to people approaching him for money.

Permission.

Protection.

Fear.

Not this.

Slowly, he held her.

Over Tessa's shoulder, Gabe appeared.

He smiled.

Zo glared at him.

Gabe disappeared immediately.

Tessa laughed.

And for the first time in years, Zo laughed too.

Later that evening, they ate with Evan and Lily at the estate.

Lily drew another picture.

This time there were four figures.

Tessa.

Evan.

Lily.

And a very tall man dressed entirely in black.

Zo stared at it.

“Why am I so large?”

Lily shrugged.

“You're scary.”

Tessa nearly choked laughing.

Then Zo noticed something written at the bottom.

One word.

FAMILY.

He stared at it longer than he intended.

Tessa saw.

She reached beneath the table and took his hand.

But across the dining room, Gabe's phone suddenly rang.

He answered.

His smile vanished.

“Boss.”

Zo looked up.

“What?”

Gabe listened.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

“They found Daniel.”

Tessa stiffened.

“Where?”

Gabe looked directly at her.

“At the hospital.”

She stood.

“What happened?”

“He was attacked.”

Tessa's face drained of color.

“Is he alive?”

“Yes.”

Gabe paused.

“And he keeps asking for you.”

“Why?”

May you like

Gabe's next words silenced the table.

“Because he says there's one last thing your mother never told you.”
