Chapter 5 - The Price of Keeping Her Safe

Danny ordered Emma out of Chicago the next morning.

She refused before he finished the sentence.

"No."

"You'll go with security."

"No."

"Emma."

"You really need another word."

Danny rolled closer.

"Price just sent somebody into my home with a rifle."

"And your solution is to put me in a car and send me somewhere he can follow?"

"My people—"

"Your people included whoever opened my bedroom door."

That silenced him.

Emma crouched in front of him.

"I'm scared too."

Danny looked at her.

"But I'm not disappearing while you destroy yourself trying to protect me."

His voice lowered.

"What do you think happens to me if he hurts you?"

Emma froze.

Danny seemed to realize what he'd said.

He looked away.

"Forget it."

"No."

"Emma."

"What happens?"

His jaw tightened.

"Don't."

She placed a hand on his.

"Danny."

He finally looked at her.

"I survived the bullet."

His voice was almost a whisper.

"I don't know if I'd survive that."

Emma's eyes filled.

For weeks, something had been growing between them in unfinished sentences and midnight conversations.

Now it stood exposed.

Emma leaned forward.

Their foreheads touched.

Danny's breathing changed.

"Tell me to stop," she whispered.

He didn't.

Emma kissed him.

It wasn't dramatic.

It wasn't desperate.

It was slow and uncertain and almost painfully gentle.

Danny's hand moved into her hair.

When they separated, he kept his eyes closed for a second.

"I don't know how to do this anymore."

"Neither do I."

"That's not reassuring."

Emma smiled.

"Good."

---

Luke ruined the moment eleven minutes later.

"We found Price."

Danny looked at him.

"Where?"

"We didn't find him physically. We found the money."

The payments led to an investment firm.

The investment firm led to a medical consultancy.

And the consultancy led to Dr. Evan Cole, one of Danny's original rehabilitation advisers.

Rachel reviewed Danny's records.

Her reaction was careful.

"Nobody can promise what your neurological outcome would have been with different treatment."

Danny nodded.

"But?"

"But some recommendations were unusually pessimistic. You were discouraged from seeking several specialist evaluations."

"Could I have walked?"

"I can't answer that."

"Could I now?"

Rachel held his gaze.

"I can't answer that either."

Danny absorbed it.

Rachel continued.

"But walking cannot be the only definition of recovery."

Two years earlier, he would have thrown something.

Now he nodded.

"What can we work on?"

Rachel smiled.

"That question is recovery."

---

Luke discovered something else.

Price had transferred $3.2 million three days before the shooting.

The authorization carried Anthony Romano's digital signature.

Danny confronted his uncle again.

Anthony looked devastated.

"I didn't authorize it."

"You expect me to believe you?"

"No. But it's true."

Luke placed technical reports on the table.

"The signature was cloned."

Anthony stared.

Luke continued.

"Price set both of you up. If Danny died, evidence pointed toward Anthony. If Danny lived, Anthony's guilt over knowing about the threat kept him quiet."

Danny looked at his uncle.

Anthony lowered his head.

"I should have told you."

"Yes."

"I thought I could handle Samuel."

"You thought wrong."

"I know."

Danny's anger remained.

But something else entered it.

Grief.

Anthony had betrayed him through cowardice, not conspiracy.

That didn't make it harmless.

But it made it human.

"You're done," Danny said.

Anthony nodded.

"No business. No access. Nothing."

"I understand."

Danny looked at him.

"But you're alive."

Anthony's eyes filled.

In the old world, that sentence meant something.

Danny had chosen differently.

Emma, standing outside the room, heard it.

She smiled.

---

Price moved first.

The call came at 7:20 p.m.

Willow Creek.

Emma's mother had suffered a panic episode.

Emma left immediately with a driver and two security men.

The call had been real.

The panic episode hadn't.

By the time Luke discovered the employee account had been compromised, Emma's SUV was already fifteen minutes away.

Danny called.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Luke called security.

One guard answered.

Gunfire exploded through the speaker.

Then silence.

Danny's face changed.

"Track the vehicle."

They found it beneath an overpass.

Empty.

Emma's phone lay shattered on the pavement.

Danny stared at the security feed.

For several seconds, he couldn't speak.

Then another phone rang.

Private number.

Danny answered.

Samuel Price's voice came through.

"Hello, Daniel."

Danny's hand tightened.

"If you touch her—"

"You've always been predictable when you care."

"Where is she?"

"Remember the Fulton warehouse?"

Danny did.

An abandoned property his father had once owned.

"Midnight."

Price continued.

"Bring the original financial files. No police. No army."

Danny looked at Luke.

"And Emma?"

A sound came through the phone.

Emma's voice.

"Danny, don't—"

The line went dead.

Danny stared at the phone.

Luke said, "It's a trap."

"Obviously."

"You can't go."

Danny looked at him.

"I'm going."

"Danny—"

"Don't."

Luke slammed a hand against the table.

"You think dying proves you care about her?"

Danny went still.

"Because it doesn't."

Luke leaned closer.

"It proves you still think sacrifice is the only language you understand."

Danny looked away.

Luke softened.

"We get her back intelligently."

Silence.

Then Danny nodded.

"Okay."

For the first time in years, Danny didn't demand control.

He accepted help.

---

Emma woke tied to a chair in the Fulton warehouse.

Samuel Price stood ten feet away.

"You were supposed to be irrelevant," he said.

Emma tested the restraints.

"People tell me that a lot."

Price smiled.

"I understand why he likes you."

"Do you?"

"You don't fear him."

"No."

"You should."

Emma looked at Price.

"I'm more afraid of men who need other people to be helpless."

His smile disappeared.

"You think Daniel changed?"

"I know he did."

"Men like him don't change."

"Then why are you so scared of what he's becoming?"

Price's expression hardened.

Emma had found the wound.

Price didn't fear Danny the criminal.

He feared Danny becoming independent.

For years, Price had profited from Danny's anger, isolation, and dependence.

A healed Danny—not physically healed, but psychologically awake—was dangerous.

At 11:56 p.m., headlights appeared outside.

Price smiled.

"Right on time."

Emma's heart sank.

A black vehicle entered the warehouse.

The rear door opened.

A ramp descended.

Danny rolled out alone.

Price stared.

"No Luke?"

Danny held up a folder.

"You wanted files."

Price approached.

Emma shook her head.

"Danny."

He looked at her.

Something in his expression told her to trust him.

Price raised a gun.

"Put the folder down."

Danny did.

"Let her go."

Price laughed.

"Still giving orders."

Danny's gaze remained steady.

"You wanted control of the businesses. Take them."

Price blinked.

"What?"

"I'll sign everything."

Emma stared at Danny.

Price did too.

Danny continued.

"You win. Let Emma walk out."

Price slowly smiled.

"There he is."

He moved closer.

"The great Danny Romano, trading an empire for a maid."

Danny looked at Emma.

"No."

His voice was calm.

"For the woman I love."

Emma stopped breathing.

Price's smile vanished.

Then lights exploded through the warehouse windows.

Luke's team moved.

Price spun.

Emma dropped sideways with the chair.

Danny drove his wheelchair directly into Price's knees.

Price crashed onto the concrete.

The gun skidded away.

Luke's men flooded the building.

Within seconds, Price was pinned.

Danny ignored him.

He rolled toward Emma.

"Are you hurt?"

She shook her head.

Luke cut the restraints.

Emma fell into Danny's arms.

He held her.

For the first time, Danny didn't care who saw.

Behind them, Price shouted.

"You think this changes what you are?"

Danny slowly turned.

For years, everyone expected the old answer.

Violence.

Revenge.

Death.

Danny looked at Luke.

"Give everything to federal investigators."

Price's face changed.

"Danny."

"Every account. Every recording. Everything."

"You can't."

Danny looked at the man who had stolen two years of his life.

"I just did."

Police sirens approached.

Price screamed threats as officers took him away.

Danny watched without satisfaction.

Emma touched his shoulder.

"It's over."

Danny looked at her.

"No."

She frowned.

He took her hand.

May you like

"I'm just finally done letting it decide who I am."
