Chapter 11 - The Winter of Healing

Silas built a cabin half a mile away.

Cora understood why.

He wanted to remain close without asking for something she couldn't yet give.

Throughout winter, he visited almost daily.

Hope adored him.

Her first clear word after “Mama” sounded suspiciously like “Si.”

Silas denied it.

Cora did not.

Their friendship deepened quietly.

They argued about fences.

Weather.

Coffee.

Whether Hope needed shoes inside the house.

“She'll freeze.”

“The floor isn't ice.”

“Feels like it.”

“You live in Montana.”

“Exactly.”

Cora laughed more than she had in years.

But grief remained.

Some nights she woke reaching for Thomas.

Silas never competed with a dead man.

That mattered.

On the anniversary of Thomas's death, Cora visited his grave.

Silas waited by the wagon.

She returned after an hour.

“You never ask what I tell him.”

“Not my business.”

“I tell him about Hope.”

Silas nodded.

“And sometimes about you.”

He looked at her.

“What do you tell him?”

“That you're irritating.”

“Fair.”

“And kind.”

Silas looked away.

Cora touched his hand.

“I think he would have liked the man you've become in our lives.”

Silas swallowed.

“Cora…”

She kissed his cheek.

Nothing more.

That was enough.

Spring returned.

Hope took her first steps between them.

Silas crouched several feet from Cora.

“Come on, little bird.”

Hope released her mother's fingers.

One step.

Two.

Then she fell directly into Silas's arms.

He lifted her, laughing.

Cora stared at him.

Something inside her shifted.

Not betrayal.

Not replacement.

Life.

Thomas had told her to live.

Maybe she finally understood.

That evening, Silas prepared to return home.

“Stay for supper.”

“I've eaten here four nights.”

“Then make it five.”

He stayed.

After Hope slept, Cora asked, “Do you still love Rebecca?”

Silas was surprised.

“Yes.”

“Does loving someone else erase her?”

“No.”

Cora nodded.

“Good.”

Silas understood.

Neither needed to say more.

But outside, beyond the warm window, a rider watched the ranch.

Gideon Vale was in prison.

Sheriff Bell was dead.

Yet someone still wanted the ledger's secrets buried.

May you like

And Cora Whitfield's peaceful new life was about to be tested again.
