Chapter 4 - The Wedding Guest

By noon, Claire had made a decision Dominic did not like.
The wedding would continue.
“Absolutely not,” he said.
They stood inside Claire’s office while wedding staff moved outside.
Claire folded her arms.
“Richard expects us to cancel.”
“That is not a reason to invite three hundred people into a potential security problem.”
“We don’t need three hundred.”
Dominic stared.
Claire continued.
“We quietly reduce the ceremony. Family. Close friends. Essential staff.”
“And use the wedding as bait.”
Claire smiled slightly.
“You said it, not me.”
Dominic stared at the woman he was supposed to marry.
“This is what happens when I fall in love with someone more stubborn than I am.”
Claire stepped closer.
“You knew what you were getting.”
“No. You were hiding in a storage room when I met you.”
“I was not hiding.”
“You had no windows.”
“That was architecture.”
Despite everything, Dominic laughed.
The tension broke for only a second.
Then he touched her face.
“If anything feels wrong, we leave.”
“Together.”
“Together.”
At 3:30, Claire changed into her wedding dress.
Anne helped.
It was the first ordinary mother-daughter moment they had shared in fifteen years.
Anne adjusted the fabric at Claire’s shoulder.
“You’re beautiful.”
Claire looked at their reflection.
“I used to imagine you would be here.”
Anne swallowed.
“I imagined it too.”
Claire turned.
“I’m still angry.”
“I know.”
“I don’t know how long it will take.”
“I know.”
“But I’m glad you’re here.”
Anne closed her eyes.
“That’s more than I deserve.”
Claire took her hand.
“Don’t decide what you deserve for me.”
Anne smiled through tears.
“You really are my daughter.”
At 4:07, Claire walked toward the ceremony.
Emily stood beside her.
Madison and Lauren had arrived after receiving the most unbelievable phone call of their lives.
Their reactions to Anne had been messy.
Tears.
Questions.
Anger.
Disbelief.
But for the moment, all four sisters stood together.
Charles was not invited to walk Claire down the aisle.
Claire walked herself.
Dominic waited beneath the waterfront arch.
When he saw her, everything else disappeared from his face.
Claire smiled.
For one moment, there was no Richard.
No ledger.
No family conspiracy.
No Blackwater Pier.
Just them.
Then Claire noticed a man standing near the back.
Gray suit.
Glasses.
Wedding program in hand.
He looked ordinary.
Too ordinary.
Richard Hales.
Their eyes met.
He smiled.
Then walked away.
Claire reached Dominic.
She whispered, “He’s here.”
Dominic did not turn.
“I know.”
The ceremony continued.
Samuel quietly followed Richard.
Gabriel moved toward another exit.
Dominic’s security closed the perimeter without alarming guests.
The officiant spoke.
Claire barely heard him.
Then it came time for the vows.
Dominic took Claire’s hands.
“I spent most of my life believing strength meant never needing anyone.”
Claire’s expression softened.
“You taught me that strength can also mean choosing someone freely.”
Richard appeared again behind a glass wall.
Watching.
Dominic continued.
“So I don’t promise to lead your life.”
Claire looked directly into his eyes.
“I promise to stand beside it.”
Claire’s throat tightened.
When her turn came, she smiled.
“I spent most of my life being told where I belonged.”
Anne began crying.
Charles, watching remotely through a private feed Emily had arranged, lowered his head.
Claire continued.
“Then I learned belonging isn’t something another person gives you.”
She looked at Dominic.
“It’s something you choose.”
Her voice steadied.
“And I choose you.”
Applause rose when they exchanged rings.
Richard disappeared.
Dominic kissed Claire.
For several seconds, the world was exactly right.
Then Samuel approached.
His face was tense.
“He went below the east warehouse.”
Gabriel joined them.
“There’s an old tunnel.”
Claire looked toward Anne.
Anne went pale.
“What tunnel?”
Gabriel answered.
“The original customs passage.”
Anne whispered, “That’s where we kept the duplicate records.”
Claire understood.
“The ledger.”
They followed the passage beneath Anne Harbor Commons.
At the end, they found Richard.
He stood beside an old metal cabinet.
No weapon.
No violence.
Just a flash drive in his hand.
Claire stopped ten feet away.
“You ruined my wedding reception.”
Richard smiled.
“You still got the ceremony.”
“What do you want?”
He held up the drive.
“Every name.”
Dominic said, “You won’t leave with it.”
Richard looked amused.
“I don’t need to.”
Claire’s phone vibrated.
Then Dominic’s.
Then Gabriel’s.
News alerts began appearing.
Richard had scheduled the files for release.
Claire stared at him.
“You’re exposing them?”
Richard smiled.
“I spent thirty years watching powerful men purchase silence.”
He looked toward Anne.
“Your mother wanted justice.”
Then toward Charles’s name on the documents.
“Your father wanted survival.”
Then toward Dominic.
“Antonio wanted control.”
Finally Claire.
“And you want freedom.”
Richard placed the drive on the cabinet.
“So I decided to give everyone exactly what they feared.”
Claire frowned.
“The truth.”
Richard nodded.
“The truth.”
But Anne suddenly whispered:
“No.”
Everyone turned.
Anne stared at the files.
“That isn’t the original ledger.”
Richard’s smile disappeared.
Anne stepped forward.
“The original had thirty-eight names.”
Claire looked at the screen.
Forty-one.
Gabriel became pale.
“Three names were added.”
Richard stared.
“By whom?”
Anne looked at Gabriel.
And Gabriel slowly lowered his eyes.
Samuel whispered, “Brother?”
Claire understood.
Gabriel had lied.
And whatever happened fifteen years ago had not ended with Victor.
May you like
Gabriel Mercer had been protecting three names all along.
