Chapter 5 - What Vanessa Really Wanted

Julia studied the policy while the rest of us sat in stunned silence.
“Increasing life insurance is not proof of an intention to harm someone,” she said immediately. “Businesses sometimes insure key people.”
“I haven’t worked there in two years,” I replied.
“That makes the timing concerning, but we will not make assumptions.”
Luke agreed.
That was when he finally explained his job to me.
He was a financial-crimes analyst attached to an interagency task force. He had no authority to investigate Derek personally without proper assignment, and he had deliberately kept himself away from the evidence-gathering process.
“But I can tell you what not to do,” he said. “Don’t confront them. Don’t speculate publicly. Let Julia give the material to the appropriate authorities.”
The policy was submitted for review along with the suspicious transfers.
The explanation arrived forty-eight hours later.
Derek’s company was on the verge of collapse.
For two years, Derek had concealed losses by moving expenses among projects and borrowing against future developments. Richard helped him manipulate financial reports so the company appeared profitable.
The insurance policy was not part of a violent scheme.
It was collateral for an emergency private loan.
My name had been used because I had been listed as a key founder on the company’s original documents. Derek had forged my approval.
It was another betrayal, but I felt relief that the truth was financial rather than darker.
Vanessa’s plan was also becoming clear.
She and Richard intended to extract as much money as possible before Sterling Development failed. Vanessa believed Derek would leave the country with her. Richard believed Derek would take responsibility if the fraud was discovered.
Derek believed he could blame me.
They were not partners.
They were three selfish people independently planning to sacrifice one another.
The silver dress had been part of Vanessa’s attempt to force the timeline forward.
She wanted Sophie and me out of the house before Friday’s gala because Derek planned to announce Vanessa as Sterling Development’s new communications director.
Vanessa had expected me to become emotional, leave without gathering documents and give Derek an opportunity to control the narrative.
Instead, she had chosen the one target that guaranteed I would stop being patient.
My daughter.
The gala was canceled after several sponsors withdrew. Noah’s company issued a formal notice regarding unpaid rent on Derek’s office, following the same procedure it used for every tenant.
Marcus removed himself entirely from the bank’s review, but independent officers suspended additional lending because Derek’s financial statements could not be verified.
Daniel’s law firm withdrew from representing Sterling Development after discovering that Derek and Richard had provided false information.
Nobody needed to bend the rules.
The truth was enough.
Vanessa contacted me through a newly created email address.
Derek planned everything, she wrote. I can prove it. Meet me alone and I’ll give you the evidence.
I forwarded the message to Julia.
We arranged a meeting in Julia’s office with lawyers present.
Vanessa arrived wearing oversized sunglasses and a cream coat. Without the silver dress and the wineglass, she looked smaller than I remembered.
“I never meant to hurt Sophie,” she said.
“You grabbed her.”
“She surprised me.”
“You told an eight-year-old that her father liked you better.”
Vanessa removed her sunglasses.
“I was angry.”
“At a child?”
“At you.”
I almost laughed. “You had my husband, my kitchen and plans to replace me. What exactly did I have that made you angry?”
Her expression sharpened.
“Respect.”
The answer surprised me.
“Derek talked about you constantly,” she continued. “Even when he complained, everything came back to Claire. Claire built the first budgets. Claire knew the contractors. Claire would understand the bank documents. Claire’s family would know what to do.”
“So you decided to frame me.”
“I wanted you gone.”
“You wanted Sophie gone, too.”
Vanessa looked down.
That was the only apology I would ever receive.
She provided messages showing that Derek knew about the transfers. In exchange, she hoped cooperation would protect her.
But her evidence also exposed her own involvement.
Among the messages was one she had sent Richard.
Once Claire is blamed, Derek will panic. Then we take what remains and leave him with the company.
Vanessa had never intended to build a life with Derek.
She intended to use him.
When Derek learned she was cooperating, he came to Julia’s office.
He looked as if he had aged ten years.
“She lied to me,” he said.
I met him in a conference room with both attorneys present.
“Yes,” I replied.
“She and Richard stole from the company.”
“You helped them.”
“I didn’t know what they were really planning.”
“You knew what you were planning to do to me.”
His shoulders dropped.
“Claire, I made mistakes.”
“A mistake is forgetting an anniversary. You forged my signature, threatened Sophie and planned to leave me responsible for your fraud.”
“I was under pressure.”
“So was Sophie. She still told the truth.”
He covered his face with both hands.
For a moment, I remembered the man who had held our newborn daughter with tears in his eyes. I remembered Sunday mornings and terrible pancakes. I remembered believing we were a team.
Then I remembered Sophie asking whether she had to go back if he apologized.
“I need you to tell the investigators everything,” I said.
“If I do, I’ll lose the company.”
“You already lost it.”
“I could go to prison.”
“That decision belongs to the justice system.”
He looked at me.
“What happens to us?”
“There is no us.”
His face folded.
I felt grief, but not doubt.
As the meeting ended, Julia received a call from the forensic examiner reviewing Derek’s devices.
They had found a deleted video recorded three nights before the confrontation.
In it, Derek and Vanessa discussed how to make me leave the house.
But the final thirty seconds revealed something none of us expected.
Derek had told Vanessa not to involve Sophie.
May you like
And Vanessa had smiled at him.
“Don’t worry,” she had said. “By Friday, your daughter will be begging Claire to take her away.”
