Chapter 5 - The USB Drive

Nobody touched the USB drive for almost a minute.

It sat on the table between us.

Small.

Black.

Ordinary.

Yet I had the strange feeling my entire marriage was trapped inside it.

Sarah called in a digital forensics specialist before anyone opened it.

Two hours later, we watched the first recording.

Adrian’s voice filled Eleanor’s library.

Clear.

Relaxed.

Confident.

“Claire never checks the trust statements herself.”

My stomach tightened.

Another man responded.

The voice was unfamiliar.

“What if she starts?”

“She won’t.”

“You’re certain?”

“I married her, didn’t I?”

Laughter.

My face burned.

The recording continued.

“She trusts people until they give her a reason not to,” Adrian said. “And by the time she gets a reason, we’ll already be out.”

Someone asked, “What about Hawthorne?”

“Dead.”

“Whitmore?”

There was a pause.

Then Adrian said, “Handled.”

Eleanor whispered, “Play that again.”

The specialist replayed it.

Whitmore?

Handled.

Eleanor’s face became stone.

Lila sat in the corner, arms wrapped around herself.

Sarah looked at her.

“When was this recorded?”

“Eight months ago.”

“Where?”

“Adrian’s office.”

“Who is the other man?”

“I don’t know.”

“You worked beside Adrian for five years.”

“I knew business contacts. I didn’t know everyone in the private meetings.”

Sarah paused.

“Were you having an affair with Adrian?”

Lila flinched.

I looked at her.

Not because I needed the answer.

I already knew.

“Yes,” she whispered.

The room seemed to narrow.

“How long?”

“Two years.”

I stared at her.

Some betrayals arrive like explosions.

Others arrive like confirmation.

This was confirmation.

I remembered missed dinners.

Business trips.

Late-night calls.

A lipstick stain Adrian insisted belonged to Vivian because his mother hugged him.

I almost laughed at the stupidity of that lie.

“You were in my house,” I said.

Lila looked down.

“Yes.”

“You sat at my table.”

“Yes.”

“You accepted birthday gifts from me.”

She began crying.

I felt nothing.

“Did you ever feel guilty?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

Her eyes lifted.

“Before or after you stole from me?”

“I didn’t know about the trust at first.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

She wiped her face.

“Yes. I felt guilty.”

“But you stayed.”

“Yes.”

“And last night?”

She closed her eyes.

“I was afraid.”

“So you laughed.”

“Because Adrian watches reactions.”

That made me pause.

She looked at me.

“If he thinks you disagree with him, he remembers.”

I knew exactly what she meant.

For the first time, I saw Lila not as a rival.

Not even as an enemy.

As another person who had convinced herself she could survive Adrian by cooperating with him.

It didn’t excuse her.

But it explained something.

Sarah resumed the recordings.

There were dozens.

Meetings.

Phone calls.

Adrian discussing shell companies.

Vivian advising him how to shift assets.

An accountant warning about exposure.

Then we reached a file recorded three weeks earlier.

Adrian sounded angry.

“Jonathan wants out.”

The unknown man responded.

“He’s wanted out for years.”

“He’s becoming a problem.”

“He has leverage.”

“So do I.”

“What leverage?”

Adrian laughed.

“His mother.”

Eleanor went pale.

The recording continued.

“You threaten Eleanor and Jonathan disappears again.”

“He already did that once.”

“Yes. And he’ll do it again.”

I looked at Eleanor.

Her hand was trembling.

She hid it quickly.

Sarah stopped the audio.

“We need law enforcement now.”

Nobody disagreed.

Within ninety minutes, federal investigators were on the property.

I spent four hours giving statements.

The bus stop.

The forged trust transfers.

Adrian’s behavior.

Everything.

At six that evening, an investigator named Agent Nolan pulled Sarah aside.

They talked quietly.

Then Sarah came to me.

“There’s a problem.”

“What?”

“Adrian is gone.”

I stared at her.

“What do you mean gone?”

“He left your house around noon.”

“With Vivian?”

“No.”

“Lila?”

“She was already here.”

“Where’s Vivian?”

“Still at the house.”

“So Adrian ran?”

“Maybe.”

“What about accounts?”

“They’re checking.”

My fear surprised me.

Not fear that Adrian would escape consequences.

Fear of what he might do while trying.

“Does he know Lila came here?”

“We don’t know.”

Lila suddenly stood.

“He does.”

Everyone looked at her.

“How?”

“My phone.”

She pulled it from her pocket.

“Adrian installed tracking software last year.”

Agent Nolan crossed the room.

“You brought a tracked phone here?”

“I turned it off.”

“That may not matter.”

The room erupted into activity.

Security teams moved.

Phones rang.

Daniel ordered the gates locked.

I went to the window.

Outside, twilight had fallen.

Then my old phone rang.

Not the replacement phone.

The one Adrian had taken.

Daniel entered carrying it inside an evidence bag.

“Police recovered it from your house.”

The screen showed an incoming call.

Unknown number.

Agent Nolan put it on speaker.

“Answer.”

I did.

“Hello?”

Silence.

Then Adrian’s voice.

“Claire.”

Every muscle in my body tightened.

“Where are you?”

“You know where I am.”

“Yes.”

He sounded calm.

Too calm.

“I need you to listen.”

“I’ve listened for seven years.”

“Don’t do this.”

“Do what?”

“Destroy everything.”

I almost laughed.

“You mean expose what you did?”

“You don’t understand what you’re involved in.”

“Then explain it.”

He went silent.

“Adrian.”

Another pause.

Then:

“Jonathan Whitmore is alive.”

I looked at Eleanor.

“Where?”

“I’ll tell you.”

“When?”

“When Eleanor transfers control of the Riverside properties back to me.”

Eleanor’s expression hardened.

“You’re bargaining with a human life?”

“No.”

His voice changed.

“I’m telling you Jonathan won’t stay alive if the wrong people think I’ve lost control.”

Agent Nolan gestured for me to keep him talking.

“Who are the wrong people?”

Adrian laughed softly.

“That’s the first smart question you’ve asked.”

Then the line went dead.

Agent Nolan immediately began issuing orders.

I sat frozen.

Eleanor stood beside me.

“Claire.”

I looked at her.

“What if he’s telling the truth?”

“He probably is.”

“What if Jonathan is in danger?”

“He probably is.”

I swallowed.

“And what are we going to do?”

Eleanor’s face became calm again.

“We are going to find my son.”

May you like

Then she added:

“And when we do, Adrian’s little empire ends.”
