Chapter 14 - MY DIVORCE BECAME CHICAGO’S FAVORITE SCANDAL

The moment QN Strategy leaked, the internet lost its mind.

Before noon:

MISTRESS RECEIVED $2.4M FROM HUSBAND’S COMPANY.

By lunch:

THE GALA DIVORCE JUST GOT WORSE.

By evening:

VANESSA QUINN DENIES IMPROPER PAYMENTS.

Dominic’s attorneys released a statement.

The contracts were legitimate communications consulting arrangements initiated before any personal relationship.

That final phrase mattered.

If true, the affair did not create the contract.

If false, Dominic had used company money to benefit his mistress.

I refused interviews.

That only made reporters more interested.

Photographers appeared outside my hotel.

Someone created a timeline of my marriage.

Another person located our wedding photos.

A gossip account posted a picture of me buying coffee under the caption:

SHE BLOCKED A BILLION-DOLLAR DEAL AND STILL ORDERS OAT MILK.

Claire sent it.

“Please stop showing me these.”

“You liked that one.”

“I did.”

The divorce itself remained surprisingly calm.

Dominic gave me the penthouse.

I declined.

He offered our lake house.

I declined that too.

My attorney nearly developed a migraine.

“You are entitled to marital assets.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you refusing everything?”

“Because I want half of what we actually built together, not trophies.”

We agreed to a financial division based on eight years of shared marital growth.

No public fight.

No attacks.

No attempt to destroy him.

Dominic signed quickly.

The press hated it.

Apparently mature financial settlements were bad content.

Then Vanessa changed that.

She called me Tuesday night.

“I need to see you.”

“No.”

“Please.”

“Speak to your attorney.”

“This isn’t about the contract.”

“What is it about?”

“Dominic.”

I almost hung up.

Then she said:

“He knew QN was mine.”

“I assumed.”

“No. I mean he knew before the relationship.”

I frowned.

“That helps him.”

“Not exactly.”

We met at my attorney’s office.

Vanessa arrived with counsel.

She looked exhausted.

Her attorney placed documents on the table.

QN Strategy belonged to Vanessa, but its consulting work was real.

Crisis planning.

Media research.

Stakeholder outreach.

The fees were high but not absurd.

“What’s the problem?” I asked.

Vanessa answered.

“Dominic structured the contracts so payments increased if specific regulatory approvals were obtained.”

“Success fees.”

“Yes.”

“For PR?”

“Yes.”

“That’s unusual.”

“Very.”

“Why?”

“Because QN used subcontractors with political connections.”

My attorney sat straighter.

“Lobbying?”

“Not officially.”

That sounded bad.

“Did Dominic direct that?”

Vanessa nodded.

“Can you prove it?”

“Yes.”

She slid over emails.

I did not read them.

My attorney did.

Her face changed.

“Evelyn.”

“What?”

“This is serious.”

Vanessa leaned toward me.

“I didn’t know what he was doing at first.”

I laughed bitterly.

“That sentence seems popular around you two.”

“I deserve that.”

“Stop stealing his lines.”

For half a second, even her lawyer smiled.

Vanessa’s face softened.

“I hated you.”

I stared.

“Why?”

“Because he kept you.”

The answer shocked me.

“He was cheating on me with you.”

“I know.”

“Then what does that mean?”

“He always talked about leaving.”

“But?”

“He never did.”

“Until Saturday.”

“Yes.”

She looked down.

“And then when he finally did, everything collapsed.”

I studied her.

“You thought I was the obstacle.”

“Yes.”

“And now?”

“I think you were the anchor.”

That sentence landed harder than I wanted.

Dominic had resented my steadiness while using it.

His marriage.

His wife.

His home.

His safe place.

And Vanessa had mistaken my invisibility for irrelevance.

Perhaps Dominic had too.

“What do you want from me?”

“Nothing.”

“Then why tell me this?”

“Because if investigators find the lobbying arrangements, Dominic will say I created them.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Then tell the board.”

“I will.”

“And federal counsel if your attorney advises it.”

Her lawyer nodded.

Vanessa looked at me.

“You could destroy me publicly.”

“Yes.”

“Why haven’t you?”

I thought about it.

Because Dad told me never to become what I hated.

Because humiliation was addictive.

Because revenge eventually demanded more than it returned.

“Your affair destroyed my marriage,” I said. “I don’t need to destroy your life to prove that.”

Her eyes filled.

“You’re kinder than I deserve.”

“No.”

I stood.

“I’m just finished letting either of you decide who I become.”

That evening, Dominic called.

“Vanessa spoke to you.”

“Yes.”

“You believe her.”

“I believe documents.”

“She’s protecting herself.”

“So are you.”

Silence.

Then:

“I never stole company money.”

“I didn’t say you did.”

“I never paid her because of the affair.”

“I didn’t say that either.”

His voice softened.

“I need you to believe at least that.”

“Why?”

“Because not everything about me is what people are saying.”

I closed my eyes.

The painful thing was, I believed him.

Dominic bent rules.

Manipulated narratives.

Hid risk.

Cheated.

But stealing corporate funds for Vanessa did not fit.

“What did QN actually do?” I asked.

He explained.

The political consultants.

Permit strategy.

Public pressure.

Aggressive.

Possibly improper.

But real work.

“Why hide the relationship between QN and political outreach?”

“Because Richard would have blocked the strategy.”

“Would he have been wrong?”

Dominic said nothing.

That was enough.

Before ending the call, he said:

“The investigation will clear the money issue.”

“And the lobbying?”

A pause.

“That may be harder.”

I looked out at Chicago.

For months Dominic had believed he could control the story.

Now every hidden decision had become part of it.

And the next day, the board investigators found the one document that turned scandal into reckoning.

A memo signed personally by Dominic.

It instructed executives to conceal potential facility closures until after the North Coast acquisition closed.

Nine hundred employees had been numbers in a secret paragraph.

And this time, there was no Vanessa to blame.
