Chapter 4 - The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

The stranger stopped outside the glass door.
Grace stood motionless.
Emily whispered behind her.
“Do you know him?”
Grace looked at the photograph on her laptop.
Then at the man outside.
Same high forehead.
Same narrow nose.
Same scar beside the left eyebrow.
Older now.
But unmistakable.
Daniel Cross.
Dead eleven years.
Except he was standing twenty feet away.
He lifted both hands where Grace could see them.
Then pointed toward the security camera.
Seconds later, Grace's phone rang.
Marcus Reed.
“Grace, do not open the door.”
Relief nearly weakened her knees.
“Do you know who's outside?”
“Not yet. Adrien's men are moving in.”
Two security officers appeared from opposite ends of the block.
The stranger made no attempt to flee.
Marcus continued.
“Stay inside.”
The security team approached Daniel.
After a brief conversation, one officer called Marcus.
Grace watched them through the glass.
Nobody was shouting.
Nobody was reaching for a weapon.
Daniel appeared almost relieved.
Five minutes later, Marcus arrived personally.
He entered first.
“Are you all right?”
“Yes.”
“Emily?”
“Fine.”
Marcus turned toward Daniel, who was escorted inside.
The supposedly dead accountant looked tired rather than dangerous.
“Mr. Cross,” Marcus said, “you have a lot of explaining to do.”
Daniel looked at Grace.
“So does the Moretti family.”
Adrien arrived twelve minutes later.
He entered the studio like a storm held inside a human body.
His eyes found Grace immediately.
He crossed the room.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“What happened?”
“I need to tell you something.”
“First him.”
Adrien turned toward Daniel.
Recognition came slowly.
“You worked for my father.”
“Yes.”
“You died.”
“Obviously not.”
Adrien's expression became ice.
“That answer won't help you.”
Grace touched his arm.
The contact stopped him.
Daniel noticed.
“So Robert hasn't managed to break you apart yet.”
Grace's fingers tightened.
Adrien looked at her bare hand on his sleeve.
Pain flashed across his face before he concealed it.
“What does Robert have to do with my marriage?”
Daniel looked between them.
“Everything.”
They moved into Grace's back workroom.
Marcus remained by the door.
Daniel sat at the long restoration table.
“I was your father's forensic accountant,” he began. “Not officially. Officially I managed foundation records.”
Adrien said nothing.
“Your father suspected money was disappearing through property transfers. Robert was moving assets through shell companies.”
“You expect me to believe my uncle was stealing from his own family for twenty years?”
“No.”
Daniel looked at him.
“I expect you to believe he was preparing to take control of it.”
Adrien's jaw tightened.
Daniel explained.
Robert had begun quietly redirecting assets years before Adrien became old enough to inherit his father's position. When Elena Moretti discovered irregularities, she confronted him.
Robert gave her a choice.
Stay silent.
Or watch her husband and son become targets in a war Robert was prepared to create from inside their own organization.
“She left to protect me?” Adrien asked.
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
Adrien's eyes darkened.
“Then what?”
“She didn't leave willingly.”
Grace felt the temperature of the room change.
Daniel continued carefully.
“Robert arranged evidence that made your father believe Elena had betrayed him. He manufactured financial trails, communications, meetings. When she tried to prove otherwise, Robert threatened to expose something that would have destroyed your father.”
“What?”
“I don't know.”
Adrien stood.
Daniel raised a hand.
“I truly don't.”
“Where is my mother?”
“She's alive.”
Adrien's composure cracked.
Only slightly.
But Grace saw it.
“Where?”
“I haven't seen her in years.”
Grace spoke.
“She called me today.”
Adrien turned.
“What?”
Grace removed her phone.
“She said her name was Elena.”
Adrien stared.
“When?”
“Before Daniel arrived.”
“You spoke to my mother and didn't call me?”
The hurt in his voice made Grace flinch.
“I didn't know if she was telling the truth.”
“You should have told me immediately.”
“And you should have told me Robert was under investigation.”
Silence.
They looked at each other.
The distance between them was no longer just a missing ring.
Daniel lowered his gaze.
Marcus pretended to become fascinated by the door.
Grace inhaled.
“Adrien, Robert gave me something at the gala.”
His eyes changed.
“The envelope.”
“You know?”
“I saw the footage.”
She laughed once, bitterly.
“So you investigated me.”
“No. I investigated what happened around you.”
“There's a difference?”
“To me, yes.”
Grace opened her desk and removed the envelope.
Adrien recognized his father's seal.
She handed him the letter.
He read it.
His face became unreadable.
Then she gave him the email.
He read that too.
“Both are fake,” Grace said.
Adrien lifted his eyes.
“How do you know?”
She explained the crest.
The typeface.
The chronology.
Then she said the sentence she had been afraid to say.
“I didn't know they were fake when Robert gave them to me.”
Understanding reached Adrien.
His gaze dropped toward her bare finger.
“That's why.”
Grace nodded.
Adrien looked away.
The powerful, controlled man suddenly seemed wounded in a way Grace had never seen.
“You thought I married you because I felt sorry for you.”
Grace's voice was barely audible.
“For three days, yes.”
Adrien stood very still.
Then he asked:
“Why didn't you ask me?”
“Because if it was true, I didn't know whether I could survive hearing you admit it.”
Adrien closed his eyes.
Grace continued.
“I know how that sounds.”
“No.”
He looked at her.
“It sounds like someone found the one wound I never knew you still carried and put a knife exactly there.”
Grace's eyes filled.
Adrien stepped toward her.
He stopped before touching her.
“May I?”
It was such a small question.
Grace nodded.
Adrien took her hand.
Her bare hand.
He lifted it between them.
“I did not marry you because I pitied you.”
Grace swallowed.
“I know that now.”
“No. You know the documents are fake. That is not the same thing.”
He looked directly into her eyes.
“I married you because you were the first person in my life who never wanted anything from Adrien Moretti except honesty.”
Grace's breath shook.
“I married you because you tell powerful people to move when they're blocking your cart.”
A wet laugh escaped her.
“I married you because you protected Emily when helping her could cost you your job.”
Emily, in the outer room, suddenly found another reason to walk farther away.
Adrien continued.
“I married you because I have never entered a room where you were standing and wanted to look anywhere else.”
Grace started crying.
Not dramatically.
Just quietly.
Adrien wiped one tear from her cheek.
“And for the record, Grace, I know exactly what my wife looks like.”
His gaze never left hers.
“I have never wished you were smaller.”
Grace closed her eyes.
The shame Robert had awakened began losing its grip.
But Daniel interrupted softly.
“There's something you both need to understand.”
Adrien turned.
“Robert didn't forge those papers merely to hurt Grace.”
Daniel pointed toward the old archive photograph on her screen.
“He needs her out of your life.”
“Why?”
“Because Grace can authenticate the original records.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“And if she does, Robert loses everything.”
Adrien's expression hardened.
“Everything?”
“Money. Property. Influence.”
Daniel's eyes moved to Grace.
“And possibly his freedom.”
Marcus's phone buzzed.
He checked the message.
His face changed.
“Boss.”
Adrien looked over.
“We found Robert's car.”
“Where?”
“Underground garage near Union Station.”
“And Robert?”
“Gone.”
Marcus turned the screen around.
Security footage showed Robert entering a train concourse carrying a black case.
But another figure was beside him.
Gray-haired woman.
Brown coat.
Grace recognized her immediately from the photograph.
Elena.
Adrien stared at the screen.
Daniel whispered:
“Oh, no.”
“What?” Adrien demanded.
Daniel's face had gone pale.
“If Robert found Elena first, he's not running.”
“What is he doing?”
Daniel looked at Adrien.
“He's finishing what he started twenty-three years ago.”
Then another message appeared on Grace's phone.
From Elena's number.
Only four words.
Adrien cannot know yet.
Attached was a photograph of an old hospital bracelet.
The patient name made Grace's heart stop.
INFANT MALE — MORETTI.
The date was three years after Adrien's birth.
Adrien had never mentioned a brother.
May you like
But apparently, Adrien Moretti had not been Elena's only son.
