The Scar Beneath Her Glove / Chapter 5 / 7

Chapter 5 - What Richard Took

Samuel survived.

Barely.

The bullet struck his shoulder rather than his chest.

By midnight, he was under armed guard at a hospital in Burlington.

Federal investigators had become involved.

The old fire case was reopened.

Cole Meridian’s board demanded answers.

News helicopters circled the hospital.

And Adrian sat beside his dying father’s former business partner, waiting.

Samuel opened his eyes after two in the morning.

“You look like Thomas.”

Adrian said nothing.

Samuel smiled weakly.

“He hated me.”

“He should have.”

“Yes.”

The answer surprised Adrian.

Samuel looked toward the door.

“Trevor?”

“Outside.”

“He’s a better man than I was.”

“That wouldn’t be difficult.”

Samuel laughed, then winced.

“You have his temper too.”

“My father’s?”

“Your mother’s.”

Adrian leaned forward.

“Tell me what happened.”

Samuel closed his eyes.

“The fire was supposed to frighten Thomas.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Fire doesn’t frighten people. It kills them.”

“I know.”

“Who started it?”

“A man I hired.”

“On whose orders?”

Samuel hesitated.

“Mine.”

Adrian stared.

Samuel continued.

“Richard knew.”

“Did he approve?”

“He said Thomas needed pressure.”

“Did he know you planned arson?”

“He knew something would happen.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“It’s the only one I have.”

Adrian stood.

Samuel grabbed his wrist.

“Thomas learned everything years later.”

“How?”

“I told him.”

“Why?”

“Because Richard betrayed me.”

Samuel’s face hardened.

“He took control of the hidden accounts. Left me exposed. When federal agents began investigating, I went to Thomas.”

“And confessed?”

“Partly.”

“What did Richard confess?”

Samuel looked frightened even now.

“He admitted he ordered Elena’s letters intercepted.”

Adrian’s stomach turned.

“He knew she was alive.”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

Samuel’s voice dropped.

“From the beginning.”

Adrian stepped away.

He had expected anger.

Instead, he felt emptiness.

Richard had raised him.

Taught him to drive.

Attended every graduation.

Helped build his career.

And all those years, he knew Adrian’s mother was alive.

Samuel continued.

“Thomas confronted him.”

“What happened?”

“Richard begged forgiveness.”

“And my father?”

“Recorded it.”

“Where?”

Samuel looked toward Trevor.

Trevor entered carrying an old leather briefcase.

“My father kept it.”

Inside was a small digital recorder, copied years earlier from cassette.

They played the file.

Static.

Then Thomas Cole’s voice.

Adrian remembered it immediately.

Older than in childhood.

Tired.

“Say it again, Richard.”

Another voice answered.

Richard.

“I kept Elena away.”

“Why?”

“Because if she came back, everything would surface.”

“What everything?”

“Samuel. The accounts. The fire.”

“Did you start the fire?”

“No.”

“Did you know Samuel planned it?”

Silence.

Then Richard whispered.

“Yes.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Thomas continued.

“You told my son his mother was dead.”

“I protected him.”

“You stole his mother.”

“I protected the company.”

“You protected yourself.”

The recording ended with shouting.

Then silence.

Adrian sat motionless.

Trevor looked ashamed.

“My father kept this as insurance.”

Samuel coughed.

“Richard has spent his life calling greed responsibility.”

Adrian stood.

“He’s going to prison.”

Samuel laughed bitterly.

“If you can keep him alive long enough.”

Adrian looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

“Richard never goes down quietly.”

At sunrise, Adrian returned to Vermont.

Elena was awake.

Martha sat beside her.

Claire had fallen asleep on the couch.

Adrian placed the recorder on the table.

His mother listened.

When Richard’s voice filled the room, Elena did not cry.

She simply stared at the wall.

Afterward, she whispered, “He came to see me once.”

Adrian turned.

“When?”

“Twenty years ago.”

“What?”

“He found me.”

Martha looked shocked.

“You never told me.”

“I was ashamed.”

“Ashamed of what?”

Elena’s eyes filled.

“He offered me money.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

“To stay away?”

“Yes.”

“And you took it?”

Elena looked at him.

“No.”

She opened a drawer.

Inside was a check.

Never deposited.

Five million dollars.

Dated twenty years earlier.

Adrian stared.

Elena whispered, “He said if I returned, people would learn Thomas had protected Samuel after the fire. He said your father’s reputation would be destroyed.”

Adrian shook his head.

“So you sacrificed your life to protect a dead man’s name?”

“To protect you.”

“From what?”

“From believing your father was weak.”

Adrian stood.

“I would rather have known the truth.”

“I know that now.”

The room fell quiet.

Then Martha said softly, “Families think silence protects children.”

Adrian looked at her.

“It usually protects adults.”

Martha nodded sadly.

Claire woke.

“What happens next?”

Adrian looked at each of them.

“We stop hiding.”

That afternoon, Adrian called a press conference.

Against every lawyer’s advice.

He stood before cameras outside Cole Meridian Tower with Martha, Elena, Claire, Vivian, and Trevor.

Richard was nowhere to be seen.

Adrian spoke clearly.

“Thirty-four years ago, my family survived a crime that was hidden by wealth, fear, and silence.”

Reporters shouted questions.

Adrian raised a hand.

“A woman named Martha Bennett saved my life. For decades, she was threatened, ignored, and treated as disposable.”

Martha began crying.

Adrian continued.

“I was one of the people who walked past her.”

The statement spread across social media within minutes.

Millions watched.

He revealed Elena.

Gasps rose.

He revealed Claire.

Then the recording.

Richard’s voice played publicly.

By evening, warrants were issued.

But Richard had disappeared.

His house was empty.

His phones abandoned.

And twenty-three million dollars had been transferred from a private account two hours before the press conference.

Vivian entered Adrian’s office that night.

“We found a note.”

“What does it say?”

She placed it on his desk.

Only one sentence was written.

If Martha had stayed invisible, none of this would have happened.

Adrian’s blood ran cold.

“Where is she?”

Vivian froze.

They both turned.

Martha had left the press conference twenty minutes earlier with a driver.

The driver’s phone was now disconnected.

Adrian called security.

No answer.

Then his own phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Richard’s voice came through.

“You wanted the truth, Adrian.”

Adrian stood slowly.

“Where is Martha?”

A pause.

Then Richard said:

“Come back to where it started.”

The line went dead.

Adrian knew exactly what he meant.

The ruins of the old Cole estate.

The place where flames had changed every life around him.

And this time, Martha was waiting there alone.
