Chapter 11 - Ethan Hayes Finally Told the Truth

The silver key was gone.

Clara knew exactly where she had left it.

A wooden keepsake box inside her old apartment closet.

When Dominic’s team arrived, the box was open.

Nothing else had been taken.

Victor had beaten them there.

Clara stood in the bedroom doorway.

“How did he know?”

Ethan looked guilty.

Dominic noticed.

“Ethan.”

Clara turned.

Her brother lowered his head.

“I told him.”

Silence.

“You what?”

“I didn’t know what it was.”

“You told Victor about the key?”

“Months ago.”

“Why?”

“He asked whether you kept anything from that night. I was trying to make him believe I trusted him.”

Clara stared.

“So you gave him information about me.”

“I gave him something I thought was meaningless.”

“You had no right.”

“I know.”

“No, you clearly don’t.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“I was trying to protect you.”

Clara laughed.

“Stop saying that!”

Everyone became silent.

“You. Dad. Vittorio. Arthur. Dominic. Every man in my life keeps lying to me and calling it protection.”

Dominic felt the words.

He deserved his place in that list.

Clara continued.

“You all make decisions about my life and then expect gratitude because your intentions were noble.”

Ethan looked crushed.

“I’m sorry.”

“You used my marriage.”

“Yes.”

“You let me think Victor kidnapped you.”

“Yes.”

“You gave him information about the most important night of my life.”

“Yes.”

Clara’s eyes filled.

“Why should I trust you?”

Ethan had no answer.

Dominic stepped toward Clara.

She immediately raised a hand.

“Not you either.”

He stopped.

“I know.”

The quiet answer hurt more than an argument.

Clara left the apartment alone.

Security followed at a distance.

Dominic let her have space.

It was one of the hardest things he had ever done.

Two hours later, she returned.

Her eyes were red but dry.

“Figure out what the key opens.”

No one argued.

Daniel Hale’s old records provided the answer.

A private railway locker at Union Station.

The key had been designed for an older secure storage system replaced years earlier.

The locker remained registered under a false identity.

Victor had the key.

But Dominic had the locker number.

They arrived before dawn.

Federal agents joined them.

Locker 4421 stood at the end of an unused corridor.

Grant looked at Dominic.

“Your key?”

“Victor has it.”

“Then we get a warrant.”

Arthur examined the lock.

“That takes too long.”

Grant stared at him.

“Do not finish the sentence you’re thinking.”

Arthur smiled.

“What sentence?”

Ethan stepped forward.

“There may be another way.”

Daniel had created a backup access code.

Hidden in Robert’s ledger.

Clara deciphered it.

The locker opened.

Inside was nothing.

Dominic swore.

Then Clara noticed scratches on the back panel.

“Wait.”

She pressed.

A false panel released.

Behind it sat a waterproof envelope.

Daniel’s handwriting covered the front.

If Dominic Rossi is reading this, my father has already tried to kill us both.

Dominic opened it.

Inside was a memory card.

Grant placed it into a secure laptop.

Video loaded.

Daniel Hale appeared.

Twenty-eight.

Dark hair.

Same eyes as Victor, but without the coldness.

“Dominic,” the recording began, “I’m sorry.”

Daniel explained everything.

Victor had been creating a coalition of corrupt businessmen, politicians, and criminal intermediaries.

He planned to trigger wars between existing groups.

Rossi power was the main obstacle.

Daniel discovered the plan.

He contacted Robert Hayes.

Then Dominic.

“Victor knows someone in your inner circle is feeding him information.”

Dominic looked at Arthur.

Arthur stiffened.

Daniel continued.

“I don’t know who. I suspect the information is being extracted indirectly. Your people may not even understand what they are providing.”

Arthur exhaled.

That supported his claim.

Then Daniel mentioned Project Mercy.

Clara leaned forward.

“My father is investing in medical networks because they provide information more valuable than money.”

Patient records.

Private medical details.

Addictions.

Diagnoses.

Prescriptions.

Information that could be used to manipulate powerful individuals.

Clara felt sick.

“That’s why he owns clinics.”

Grant nodded.

Daniel continued.

“He intends to build an invisible blackmail system.”

Dominic’s expression hardened.

Victor did not want territory.

He wanted control.

Then Daniel looked into the camera.

“One person already has enough evidence to destroy the entire network.”

Clara held her breath.

“Robert Hayes.”

Her father.

“He created a master ledger. But the digital key is split into two pieces. My father knows this locker contains one.”

They searched the envelope.

A tiny memory chip.

“Where’s the second?” Clara asked.

Daniel answered from the screen.

“I gave the second piece to Dominic during our final meeting.”

Dominic frowned.

“That meeting never happened.”

“Exactly,” Arthur said.

Daniel had mailed something instead.

The silver object.

Not merely a physical key.

It likely contained a second digital component.

Victor now possessed it.

“We have one half,” Grant said.

“Victor has the other.”

Clara understood.

“He needs both.”

“Yes.”

“That’s why he wants me.”

Dominic looked at her.

“He thinks you can lead him to this half.”

Victor didn’t know they had found the locker.

Yet.

Ethan sat quietly.

Clara noticed.

“What?”

He looked at her.

“I can get close to him.”

“No.”

“I already am.”

“You’re done.”

“Clara—”

“No more secret missions.”

“This may be the only chance.”

Dominic surprised everyone.

“She’s right.”

Ethan looked at him.

“You’re agreeing with her?”

“Get used to disappointment.”

Clara almost smiled.

Grant proposed a controlled operation.

They would make Victor believe Clara had the second half.

Bring him into the open.

Clara understood immediately.

“You want to use me as bait.”

Dominic said no before Grant finished.

Clara looked at him.

“This time, I decide.”

His jaw tightened.

“It’s dangerous.”

“Yes.”

“I don’t want you doing it.”

“I know.”

“You could be killed.”

“So could Ethan. So could you.”

Dominic stepped closer.

“Clara.”

She met his eyes.

“This is what choice looks like.”

The words hit him.

Their marriage had begun because he denied her a fair choice.

Now loving her meant accepting one he desperately wanted to stop.

He closed his eyes briefly.

Then nodded.

“Your conditions.”

Clara blinked.

“What?”

“If you do this, you set the conditions.”

Grant raised an eyebrow.

Clara looked at Dominic.

Something changed between them.

Respect.

Real respect.

Not protection disguised as control.

“Fine,” Clara said. “No one improvises without telling me. Ethan stays where I can see him. Federal agents handle the arrest. Dominic does not start a war.”

Dominic sighed.

“That last condition feels personal.”

“It is.”

“And you?”

“What about me?”

“You stay alive.”

Clara held his gaze.

“That condition applies to you too.”

The operation was set.

Victor would receive a message before sunset.

Clara Hayes had found Daniel’s second file.

She wanted to exchange it for Ethan’s safety.

The lie was convincing because Victor still believed Ethan belonged to him.

But Ethan had one final confession.

“Clara.”

“What?”

“Victor already knows I betrayed him.”

The room went silent.

“How?”

Ethan swallowed.

“Because he told me yesterday.”

Dominic’s eyes hardened.

“And you waited until now?”

“He said it didn’t matter.”

“Why not?”

Ethan looked at Clara.

“Because according to Victor, everything we’re doing is exactly what he wants.”

At that same moment, alarms sounded at Dominic’s mansion.

Marco called.

Someone had entered the private archive.

By the time security arrived, Arthur Moretti was gone.

May you like

And so was Daniel’s memory card.
