Chapter 5 - The Dead Woman in Damian Caruso’s Past

Claire forgot the cold.
Forgot the parked cars.
Forgot Damian's men positioned invisibly somewhere beyond the street.
"What does that mean?"
Dr. Malcolm Vale glanced over his shoulder.
"Evan Mercer was born Evan Hale."
Claire stared.
She had never heard the name.
Vale continued.
"His father was Thomas Hale."
Damian appeared from the darkness.
Vale recoiled.
"You said alone!"
Claire turned.
"I didn't bring him."
Damian approached slowly.
"But I came."
Vale looked ready to run.
Then Damian said, "Thomas Hale."
The doctor froze.
Damian knew the name.
Claire saw it immediately.
"Who was he?"
Damian's face had changed.
"An accountant for my father."
Vale nodded.
"Not just an accountant."
He looked at Damian.
"He handled the funds Leonard Shaw stole."
Damian became very still.
Twenty-three years earlier Thomas Hale had helped Leonard reroute money through Whitaker accounts.
When investigators closed in, Leonard needed someone disposable.
Thomas Hale became that person.
He lost everything.
His career.
His marriage.
His home.
Three years later, he died.
Evan had been seventeen.
Claire whispered, "So he married me because of my father."
Vale looked at her with pity.
"At first."
Two words.
At first.
Somehow that hurt more.
"How do you know all this?"
"Because Evan hired me seven years ago."
"To do what?"
"Help him understand competency law."
Damian's jaw tightened.
Vale raised his hands.
"I never agreed to hurt her."
"You falsified medical notes."
"I documented what Evan told me."
"You never verified it."
"I know."
"You met Daniel."
Vale lowered his eyes.
"Daniel figured it out."
Claire stepped closer.
"What happened the morning my father died?"
Vale shook his head.
"I wasn't there."
"But Evan was."
"Yes."
"Did he kill him?"
"I don't know."
Claire's voice broke.
"Don't lie to me."
"I'm not."
Vale swallowed.
"Daniel had a cardiac condition. Evan knew it. He also knew Daniel was taking medication."
Claire felt nauseated.
"What did he do?"
"I don't know."
Vale's silence answered too much.
Damian moved closer.
"Try again."
Vale looked at him.
"Evan asked me six years ago what might make an elderly cardiac patient appear naturally confused or weak."
Claire closed her eyes.
"He was planning it even then."
"Maybe."
"You said this isn't about my company."
"It isn't."
Vale looked at Damian.
"Evan wants the ledger."
Damian understood.
"Because it proves Thomas Hale participated."
"No."
Vale shook his head.
"It proves Thomas Hale didn't."
Silence.
Claire looked down at the copied ledger pages.
She had misunderstood.
Thomas Hale had not stolen the money.
Leonard had used his credentials.
Daniel discovered that years later.
The ledger could clear Thomas Hale's name.
"Then why destroy Damian?"
Vale looked at him.
"Because Evan believes your father killed his."
Damian stared.
"My father never touched Thomas Hale."
"I know that."
"Evan doesn't."
Vale explained.
After Thomas lost his career, he began threatening to expose Leonard and Vittorio Caruso.
One night he disappeared.
His car was found near a Caruso-owned dock.
Police concluded suicide.
Evan never believed it.
"He thinks Vittorio had him killed," Vale said.
Damian's voice lowered.
"My father spent the rest of his life denying it."
"Exactly."
Claire understood.
Evan had spent two decades building revenge against two families.
Whitaker.
Caruso.
She was not merely a wife with valuable shares.
She was an entry point.
A bridge into the family Evan blamed for destroying his father.
"What about the company?"
Vale looked at her.
"The voting trust gives Evan control of archived shipping records."
"The ledger?"
"Yes."
Claire shook her head.
"We already have it."
Vale's eyes widened.
"You have the original?"
"Yes."
"Then you're in more danger than you realize."
Damian almost laughed.
"That seems to be a recurring theme."
Vale stepped closer.
"There is another page."
"What page?"
"The ledger section Daniel removed."
Claire's stomach tightened.
"What does it show?"
"Who killed Thomas Hale."
Damian went motionless.
Claire whispered, "My father knew?"
"Eventually."
"Who?"
Vale looked around again.
Before he could answer, headlights flooded the parking lot.
A black sedan accelerated toward them.
Damian grabbed Claire and pulled her behind a concrete barrier.
The sedan stopped hard.
Two men got out.
No guns were raised.
No dramatic shootout followed.
They simply shouted for Vale.
"Doctor! Mr. Mercer wants to talk."
Vale panicked.
"No."
Damian looked at him.
"Stay here."
But Vale ran.
"Vale!"
He crossed between parked cars.
The two men followed.
Damian did not.
Claire stared.
"You're letting them take him?"
"They're not police. And they haven't touched him."
"Then do something."
Damian looked at her.
"Watch."
Vale reached the sedan.
The rear door opened.
Evan stepped out.
Claire's heart stopped.
Evan looked across the lot.
Straight at her.
He had known.
Of course he had known.
"Claire!"
She stepped from behind the barrier despite Damian's hand.
Evan smiled sadly.
"I hoped you wouldn't come."
"You sent the message."
"No. Vale did."
Dr. Vale stood between them.
"Evan, I'm done."
"You've said that before."
"This time I mean it."
Evan looked almost tired.
"Then tell her."
Vale hesitated.
Evan smiled.
"Tell Claire who killed Thomas Hale."
Vale turned toward Damian.
"Leonard Shaw."
Silence.
Claire stared.
"Leonard?"
Vale nodded.
"Thomas threatened to go public. Leonard arranged a meeting at the Caruso dock so suspicion would fall on Vittorio."
Damian's face became stone.
"My father spent twenty years blamed for it."
"Yes."
Evan laughed softly.
"Convenient story."
Vale looked at him.
"It's true."
"Then why didn't you tell me ten years ago?"
"Because Leonard paid me."
Evan flinched as if struck.
That was the first real emotion Claire had seen from him.
Not anger.
Pain.
Everything Evan had built rested on a false belief.
He had married Claire believing Daniel protected the man who ruined his father.
He had targeted Damian believing Vittorio had killed Thomas.
And Leonard Shaw—the respectable chairman—had been the architect all along.
Claire stepped forward.
"Evan."
"Don't."
"Your enemy isn't me."
"Don't."
"My father made terrible mistakes. Damian's father made mistakes. But Leonard—"
"Stop!"
The word exploded across the parking lot.
For once Evan did not sound gentle.
He sounded seventeen.
Claire saw it.
The abandoned son inside the polished husband.
But sympathy did not erase what he had done.
"You chained me to a column."
Evan's face changed.
"I needed you to understand."
"You drugged me."
"I protected you."
"You told everyone I was insane."
"You wouldn't listen!"
Claire shook her head.
"No, Evan. You needed me to stop being a person."
He stared at her.
"You were supposed to help me."
"I was your wife."
"Exactly."
"No."
Claire's voice became steady.
"Exactly is the problem."
Police sirens sounded in the distance.
Mason's work.
Evan heard them.
He looked at Vale.
"You called them?"
Vale shook his head.
Damian said, "I did."
Evan laughed.
"Of course."
He returned to the sedan.
Before entering, he looked at Claire.
"You think Caruso saved you?"
Claire said nothing.
Evan's gaze moved to Damian.
"Ask him about Elena."
Damian froze.
Claire felt the shift beside her.
Evan smiled.
"There it is."
"Get in your car," Damian said.
"Claire deserves to know."
Damian's expression became dangerous.
But Evan continued.
"Ask him why his sister died."
Claire looked at Damian.
Evan spoke softly.
"Ask him who she was running from when she called him."
Damian stepped forward.
Evan got into the sedan.
The car pulled away before police arrived.
Claire turned to Damian.
"What did he mean?"
"Not now."
"Damian."
Vale looked at the ground.
He knew too.
Claire saw it.
"What happened to Elena?"
Damian remained silent.
Vale whispered, "She knew Evan."
Damian closed his eyes.
Claire's breath caught.
"How?"
Vale answered.
"She was his first wife."
The world seemed to stop.
Evan Mercer—the man Claire had married—had been married before.
To Damian Caruso's sister.
May you like
And she was dead.
