Chapter 6 - The Last Lie

The answer was hidden in Richard Mercer’s records.
Richard had altered the trust documents.
He had inserted the false statement as a condition because he knew Lorraine would either refuse and lose the money or sign and permanently stain Thomas Mercer’s name.
Either outcome protected Richard.
It was one final cruelty.
Adrian’s attorneys challenged the condition.
The court eventually invalidated it based on evidence of fraud.
The Bennett trust was restored.
Lorraine cried when the ruling arrived.
Not because of the money.
Because Daniel’s name was finally clean.
Maya used part of the trust to pay off her mother’s mortgage.
She created an education account for Toby.
Then she did something nobody expected.
She donated a large portion to St. Catherine’s emergency assistance program for families who could not afford medication.
Adrian found her sitting outside the hospital afterward.
“You gave away a lot.”
“I kept enough.”
“I know.”
“How?”
He smiled.
“Your brother has no respect for financial confidentiality.”
Maya laughed.
Then became serious.
“I spent years believing money would solve everything.”
“And?”
“It solves bills.”
“That’s not nothing.”
“No.”
She looked toward the hospital.
“But it doesn’t solve grief. Or guilt. Or fear.”
Adrian sat beside her.
“No.”
“What are you afraid of now?”
He thought.
“Losing something real because I’m afraid it started under impossible circumstances.”
Maya knew exactly what he meant.
Their eyes met.
This time, she kissed him.
It was gentle.
No dramatic music.
No perfect timing.
Just two exhausted people who had survived the consequences of decisions made long before either understood them.
When they separated, Adrian smiled.
“So that wasn’t medically necessary?”
“Definitely not.”
“Good.”
For six months, life became almost normal.
Maya began her fellowship.
Toby graduated.
Lorraine started gardening again.
Evelyn and Lorraine developed an unexpected friendship built mostly around arguing about recipes.
Claire moved to Boston and began rebuilding her life after testifying against her father.
Charles Whitmore accepted a plea agreement that sent him to prison.
Mercer Holdings reorganized its leadership.
Adrian stepped away temporarily.
He wanted to understand who he was without the company.
Then, one evening, Maya came home and found Adrian standing outside her apartment.
He looked nervous.
She immediately became suspicious.
“What did you do?”
“Why assume I did something?”
“You’re wearing the face you make before saying something expensive.”
He laughed.
“I bought a building.”
“Adrian.”
“Not for you.”
“Adrian.”
“It’s an old community clinic.”
She stared.
“What?”
He handed her photographs.
The building had been abandoned for years.
“I want to restore it.”
“Why?”
“Because St. Catherine’s emergency department treats hundreds of people who need primary care, not emergency care.”
Maya looked at him.
“You listened.”
“I always listen to you.”
“What does this have to do with me?”
“I want you to help design the nursing program.”
Maya stared at the photographs.
“This isn’t a romantic gift?”
“No.”
“Good.”
“It’s a job offer.”
“Better.”
He grinned.
Then his expression changed.
“There is something else.”
“Of course there is.”
He reached into his coat.
Maya’s heart stopped.
“Adrian.”
He pulled out—
Not a ring.
A watch.
His watch.
The same one from Trauma Bay Nine.
He placed it in her palm.
“I stopped wearing it.”
“Why?”
“Because for months it reminded me of almost dying.”
He turned it over.
FOR ADRIAN. ALWAYS.
“My father gave it to me when I became CEO.”
Maya ran her thumb over the engraving.
“Why are you giving it to me?”
“I’m not.”
He closed her fingers around it temporarily.
“I want you to hold it.”
“For what?”
“Because there’s something hidden inside.”
Maya frowned.
Adrian pressed a tiny mechanism beneath the clasp.
The back opened.
Inside was a folded piece of paper so small Maya could barely believe it had been there.
“What is that?”
“I found it this morning.”
She unfolded it carefully.
Three handwritten words.
FIND DANIEL BENNETT.
Maya stopped breathing.
“That’s my father.”
“Yes.”
“Who wrote this?”
Adrian swallowed.
“My father.”
Maya stared at him.
Thomas Mercer had known.
Before he died, Thomas had wanted to find Daniel.
But Daniel had already been dead for years.
“Why would he hide this in your watch?”
“I think he wanted me to finish what he couldn’t.”
Maya looked down at the message.
There was something written on the reverse.
A date.
The day before Thomas Mercer died.
And beneath it:
ASK EVELYN WHAT REALLY HAPPENED.
Maya looked up.
“Your mother knows something.”
Adrian’s expression was grim.
“Yes.”
“And she never told us.”
“No.”
May you like
The final secret had been sitting beside them all along.
