Chapter 4 - The Thanksgiving ToastMy father was the first person to speak.

“What did you just say?”

His voice was low.

Dangerously low.

Megan covered her mouth.

Daniel remained completely still.

My mother looked at me as if she hoped she had misunderstood.

“Claire,” she whispered. “What are you talking about?”

I opened the folder.

Daniel pushed his chair backward.

“Can we do this privately?”

I looked at him.

“We’ve been doing it privately for months.”

“Claire.”

“No.”

My voice did not rise.

That surprised even me.

I had imagined this moment countless times.

In some versions, I screamed.

In others, I threw wine.

In reality, I felt strangely calm.

Maybe because I had already done my screaming alone.

I lifted the first document.

“This is an acknowledgment of paternity signed at the hospital.”

My mother’s face went white.

Megan began sobbing.

I slid the copy toward my father.

He read the first page.

Then the second.

Then stared at Daniel.

“You?”

Daniel swallowed.

Nobody moved.

Dad stood.

My mother grabbed his arm.

“Sit down.”

He ignored her.

“You are that baby’s father?”

Daniel looked toward me.

Not my father.

Me.

“I can explain.”

“No,” I said. “You can answer.”

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

My aunt gasped.

One of my cousins whispered, “Oh my God.”

Mom looked at Megan.

“Megan?”

My sister was crying so hard she could barely breathe.

“I’m sorry.”

Those two words changed something in our mother’s face.

Not because they helped.

Because they confirmed everything.

“How?” Mom asked.

Megan shook her head.

“When?”

No answer.

Dad slammed his palm on the table.

“When?”

Noah startled in his carrier and began crying.

The entire room changed instantly.

I moved toward him before anyone else.

So did Daniel.

We both stopped.

I looked at him.

Then picked Noah up myself.

“It’s okay,” I whispered.

None of this was his fault.

Megan reached for him.

I handed him to her.

Then returned to my chair.

My father remained standing.

“You slept with your wife’s sister?”

Daniel looked ashamed now.

Good.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

Daniel hesitated.

That was when I opened the second section of documents.

“Longer than he wants you to know.”

I placed printed emails on the table.

Megan stared at them.

Her expression changed from grief to fear.

“What are those?”

“You know exactly what they are.”

Daniel stood.

“Where did you get them?”

I almost laughed.

“That’s your concern?”

“Claire, those were private.”

“So was my marriage.”

He flinched.

I turned toward my parents.

“The affair started before Daniel and I separated.”

Mom frowned.

“I thought you two separated because you were having problems.”

“We were.”

I looked at Megan.

“But apparently my problems were useful.”

Megan shook her head.

“No.”

I handed my father the message.

“I can push her to stay with Mom if things blow up. She always listens to me.”

He read it.

Then passed it to Mom.

My mother stared at the sentence for a long time.

“Megan.”

“It wasn’t like that.”

I actually smiled.

“What was it like?”

She looked at me.

“I didn’t plan for this.”

“You discussed getting me out of my own house.”

“We didn’t cause your argument!”

“No. You just took advantage of it.”

Daniel tried to speak.

I stopped him.

“The hotel receipt is March third. The Valentine’s Day dinner is February fourteenth. Your affair began before our separation.”

Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.

My father asked the question everyone eventually wanted answered.

“How long?”

Daniel said nothing.

Megan whispered, “Since December.”

Three months before our separation.

I had believed the worst betrayal happened during four weeks when my marriage was paused.

Instead, it had been happening while I was still sleeping beside him.

Christmas.

New Year’s.

My birthday.

All of it.

I stared at Megan.

“December?”

She nodded.

“How?”

“It just happened.”

“No.”

My voice sharpened for the first time.

“Rain happens. Power outages happen. Affairs require decisions.”

She looked down.

I continued.

“You came into my house. You listened to me talk about my marriage. You knew I wanted children. You knew Daniel and I were struggling. Then you slept with him.”

Tears ran down her face.

“I loved him.”

The room went still again.

That hurt more than I expected.

Not because I cared whom she loved.

Because saying it aloud proved this was not one terrible mistake.

It was a relationship.

Daniel whispered, “Megan…”

She looked at him.

“What? It’s true.”

I studied them.

Something changed in that moment.

For months, I had imagined them united against me.

Two conspirators.

But suddenly I saw something else.

Megan believed Daniel loved her.

Daniel’s expression suggested something far less certain.

I turned to him.

“Do you love her?”

He stared at me.

Megan stopped crying.

Everyone waited.

Daniel looked toward the table.

“Claire…”

“It’s a simple question.”

“I care about her.”

Megan’s face collapsed.

I almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

“You told me you loved me,” Megan whispered.

Daniel looked trapped.

“I do.”

“Then say it.”

He didn’t.

I understood something then.

Daniel had wanted two lives.

His marriage.

His son.

His relationship with Megan.

He did not want truth because truth forced choices.

My Thanksgiving toast had finally removed that luxury.

I reached into the folder.

“There’s one more thing.”

Daniel looked exhausted.

“What?”

I placed an envelope beside his plate.

“Divorce papers.”

My mother gasped softly.

Daniel stared at them.

“You filed?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Three days ago.”

“Without talking to me?”

That made my father laugh bitterly.

“Are you serious?”

Daniel ignored him.

“Claire, we should talk before you make permanent decisions.”

I leaned forward.

“You signed a legal document acknowledging a child with my sister. I think you already made the permanent decision.”

He sat down.

For the first time, he looked truly frightened.

Not about losing the family.

About losing control.

Megan held Noah close.

She whispered, “What happens now?”

I looked at her.

“That’s not my decision.”

“What do you mean?”

“You wanted Daniel.”

My sister stared at me.

“You had a child with him. You helped him lie. You encouraged me to leave my marriage long enough to make your secret easier.”

“That isn’t fair.”

“No. Fair would have been telling me the truth before you slept with my husband.”

Mom began crying.

Dad walked away from the table.

Thanksgiving dinner was over.

Nobody touched dessert.

My aunt and cousins left quietly.

Dad spent twenty minutes outside before returning.

Mom helped Megan pack Noah’s things.

Daniel remained in the dining room.

Eventually, everyone was gone except him and me.

The house looked surreal.

Half-empty glasses.

Cold food.

Candles still burning.

A baby blanket forgotten on a chair.

Daniel finally spoke.

“Was any part of tonight about saving us?”

I stared at him.

“Saving what?”

“Our marriage.”

“You ended our marriage months ago.”

“I made a mistake.”

“No. You made hundreds of decisions.”

He looked away.

“I never meant to fall in love with her.”

I waited.

“With Megan?”

He didn’t answer.

That told me everything.

“You don’t even know which woman you’re lying to anymore.”

Daniel sat silently.

Then he said something that stunned me.

“I never planned to leave you.”

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because somehow he thought that made it better.

“I know.”

He frowned.

“That’s the problem.”

I walked upstairs.

His suitcase was already packed.

I had prepared it that morning.

I carried it down and placed it beside him.

Daniel looked at it.

“You want me gone tonight?”

“Yes.”

“This is my house too.”

“Rebecca will communicate with your attorney about the property. Tonight, you can stay at a hotel.”

“Rebecca?”

“My lawyer.”

He stared at me.

For the first time, he understood how far ahead of him I was.

“Claire…”

I opened the front door.

He stood.

At the threshold, he turned.

“I’m sorry.”

I believed he was.

But remorse does not reverse betrayal.

I closed the door.

Then locked it.

For the first time since discovering the truth, I was completely alone.

And that was when I finally collapsed.

I sat on the kitchen floor and cried until after midnight.

But the next morning brought a different kind of shock.

Because Daniel did not go to Megan.

May you like

And when Megan discovered that the man she had risked our entire family for had checked into a hotel alone, she appeared on my doorstep with Noah in her arms.

What she confessed next revealed that Daniel had been lying to her almost as much as he had been lying to me.
