Chapter 14 - The House Everyone Wanted

Two years after the attempted transfer, another developer approached me.

This one did everything differently.

Formal letter.

Independent appraisal.

My own attorney present.

No urgency.

No threats.

No questions about my age.

The offer was enormous.

I surprised everyone.

I considered it.

Protecting yourself doesn’t mean never changing your mind.

It means the choice remains yours.

I walked through Mom’s house with Mrs. Ellison.

“What would you do?” I asked.

She laughed.

“I’m your tenant. I have an obvious conflict of interest.”

“Fair.”

I walked into the backyard.

The maple tree had recovered.

New growth surrounded the place where part of the root system had been damaged.

I thought about Mom.

Then I realized keeping the property forever wasn’t the lesson she left me.

Choosing freely was.

I declined the development offer anyway.

But this time it wasn’t because I was frightened.

I had another idea.
