Chapter 14 - The Betrayal Came From His Own Blood

Dante Moretti entered the Hargrove Estate at six forty-five on Saturday evening.
He wore a black tailored suit and carried a leather document case.
The grand mansion glowed beneath hundreds of decorative lights.
Luxury vehicles lined the circular driveway.
Guests in evening gowns and expensive tuxedos passed through enormous glass doors, completely unaware that the evening's extravagant wedding was also the setting for a dangerous private negotiation.
Dante's expression revealed nothing.
But inside his jacket, close to his heart, rested Rosa's old breakup letter.
He had brought it for a reason.
Seven years earlier, Carlo had used a forged document to destroy their relationship.
Tonight, Dante intended to learn how many other lives his uncle had manipulated.
Marco approached him near the entrance.
"The authorities are aware of the situation. Evelyn's with the investigators."
"Any word from Rosa?"
"No."
Dante looked toward the estate.
His jaw tightened.
"Then we continue."
Three hours earlier, Rosa and Lucia had been taken from the archive and locked in separate rooms.
Meredith personally confiscated the phone Lucia had provided.
She examined its photographs.
Then she looked at Rosa.
"You've been busy."
Rosa sat opposite her.
"Your staff aren't particularly good at securing documents."
Meredith gave a humorless smile.
"You've inherited your father's mouth."
"And apparently his taste in enemies."
Meredith leaned closer.
"Thomas could have walked away."
Rosa held her gaze.
"Was that what you offered him before someone interfered with his safety equipment?"
For the first time, Meredith's expression cracked.
"Who told you that?"
"Your own records."
Meredith straightened.
"You don't understand the circumstances."
"Then explain them."
Meredith remained silent.
Rosa continued.
"Was it Carlo? Richard? Peter Vale? Who authorized it?"
The older woman's face hardened.
"You should be grateful you're still alive."
Rosa felt the threat.
She also recognized the desperation behind it.
For years, Meredith had operated inside a world where money could bury almost any problem.
Now the paperwork was resurfacing.
The videos were public.
Witnesses were cooperating.
And a waitress she had underestimated refused to disappear.
At seven fifteen, Victor Hargrove stood beside an enormous arrangement of white orchids, adjusting his bow tie.
His wedding photographer approached.
"Mr. Hargrove, we're ready for the family portraits."
Victor glanced toward the staircase.
"Where's Vanessa?"
"Her assistant said she'll be down shortly."
Victor swore beneath his breath.
His father stood nearby, unusually quiet.
Richard had barely spoken to him all day.
"What's wrong with you?" Victor asked.
Richard looked toward his son.
"For once in your life, Victor, I wish you'd ask what was wrong with someone else."
Victor frowned.
"What?"
Richard adjusted his jacket.
"Nothing."
A few moments later, the mansion's main doors opened.
Dante entered.
Several guests turned.
Richard closed his eyes.
Victor forced a smile.
"Moretti. Glad you could make it."
Dante stopped in front of him.
"Where is Rosa?"
Victor's smile vanished.
"You always ruin the mood."
"Answer."
Victor glanced toward the upper floor.
"Mother Meredith will explain."
"Then get her."
Dante did not raise his voice.
He did not need to.
Victor stepped aside.
Carlo Moretti waited inside Richard's private study.
The moment Dante entered, he rose with open arms.
"My boy."
Dante remained near the door.
"Don't."
Carlo lowered his hands.
"After everything I've done for you?"
Dante placed the leather document case on the desk.
"Is Rosa alive?"
"Of course."
"And Lucia?"
Carlo's expression changed almost imperceptibly.
Dante saw it.
For years, he had overlooked those small signs.
The fraction of a second before Carlo answered.
The way he redirected a conversation when someone mentioned financial audits.
The habit of speaking about loyalty while quietly controlling everyone around him.
"Where is my sister?" Dante repeated.
Carlo sat.
"You should have stopped looking."
Dante felt his heartbeat change.
"So she's alive."
Carlo did not answer.
Meredith entered through the adjoining door.
She wore a magnificent dark-green evening gown.
Everything about her suggested wealth and elegance.
Except the expression in her eyes.
"Have you brought the transfer agreement?" she asked.
Dante opened the case.
"Here."
Meredith stepped forward.
"Excellent."
He placed the documents on the desk but kept his hand over them.
"Rosa first."
"After you sign."
"No."
Carlo sighed.
"Dante, must everything be a confrontation?"
Dante turned toward him.
"You forged a letter in my name. You lied about Rosa. You used my sister's identity to establish a trust she never authorized."
His uncle went still.
"And you diverted company assets without my knowledge."
Meredith glanced sharply at Carlo.
"How much does he know?"
Dante looked at her.
"Enough to have brought independent counsel."
He gestured toward the documents.
"The agreement has been reviewed. I'm not signing an unrestricted transfer."
Carlo stood.
"You ungrateful boy."
Dante stared at him.
"I spent fifteen years protecting this family."
"And I spent decades building it!"
"My father built it."
Carlo's face twisted.
"Your father was weak."
The room fell silent.
Dante felt something inside him become very still.
"Don't speak about him that way."
"He wanted to dismantle everything because he discovered a few questionable transactions. He cared more about his conscience than his own brother."
Dante's voice lowered.
"Did you have something to do with his death?"
Carlo stared.
For one long moment, the older man looked almost frightened by what he had revealed.
"Your father had a heart condition."
"That wasn't my question."
Meredith stepped forward.
"This discussion is unnecessary."
Dante ignored her.
"Did he discover the land transactions?"
Carlo's hands shook.
"Your father threatened to go to the authorities. He was prepared to destroy businesses that supported hundreds of families."
"So you concealed what he found."
"I protected us."
"And Lucia?"
Carlo looked away.
Dante stepped closer.
"Where is she?"
A new voice came from the doorway.
"Right here, Uncle."
Everyone turned.
Lucia Moretti stood beneath the study's chandelier.
Beside her was Rosa Bellamy.
And behind them waited two uniformed officers.
Dante stopped breathing.
For eleven years, he had imagined this moment.
His sister older.
His sister different.
His sister standing alive before him.
"Lucia?"
Her eyes filled.
"Hi, big brother."
Dante crossed the room.
They embraced so tightly that Rosa turned away to give them privacy.
Lucia began crying.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
Dante shook his head.
"No. No apologies."
His voice broke.
"You're alive."
Carlo stared at them.
Then at the officers.
Meredith's expression turned white.
"What is this?"
Rosa stepped forward.
"The part where people stop pretending they don't know what happened."
Carlo's gaze fixed on her.
"You foolish girl."
Rosa did not retreat.
"My father had a name. Thomas Bellamy. You remember him, don't you?"
One of the officers requested that everyone remain in the room while detectives arrived to speak with the parties involved.
Meredith reached into her handbag.
Then stopped.
Her phone was vibrating.
A message from Vanessa.
I gave Evelyn the files.
A second message appeared.
I also gave her your recorded instructions.
May you like
Meredith slowly closed her eyes.
For the first time that evening, the woman who had controlled everyone else's choices understood that her own daughter had made one without permission.
