Chapter 12 - Moretti Discovers the Wrong Enemy

The files were devastating.
Illegal payments.
Shell corporations.
Construction kickbacks.
Union intimidation.
Money transfers through offshore accounts.
Everything carried Moretti company identifiers.
Everything appeared current.
Vincenzo stared at the screen.
“These aren't mine.”
Agent Brooks looked at him.
“Your corporate signatures are attached.”
“Forged.”
“Can you prove that?”
“I don't know.”
Clara stood behind him.
Twenty-four hours earlier she would have assumed guilt.
After what happened to her, she understood how dangerous assumptions could be.
“Where did Vale get these?”
Agent Brooks examined metadata.
“Created over the past eighteen months.”
Alessandro stepped closer.
“Who had access to Moretti systems?”
Vincenzo's expression changed.
“My finance director.”
“Name?”
“Gabriel Rossi.”
Clara remembered.
“Was he at table four?”
“No.”
“Where is he?”
Moretti called.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Agent Brooks immediately contacted investigators.
Rossi's apartment was empty.
His office had been cleaned out.
Moretti looked sick.
“Gabriel worked for my father.”
Alessandro's eyes sharpened.
“How long?”
“Twenty-seven years.”
“Before Carlo died.”
“Yes.”
Clara understood.
Another inherited loyalty.
Another person Moretti never questioned because his father trusted him.
“What did Rossi handle?” she asked.
“Everything financial.”
“Could he create fake accounts that looked real?”
“Yes.”
“Could he move real money?”
Moretti looked at her.
“Yes.”
Agent Brooks said, “Then we need him.”
Julian Cross sat in federal custody and refused to speak.
Thomas Vale had begun cooperating the second he realized Julian could no longer protect him.
Vale claimed Gabriel Rossi was not merely helping Cross.
He had financed him.
The revelation stunned Moretti.
“Gabriel hated Cross.”
Vale laughed bitterly.
“Gabriel was Cross.”
Not literally.
Operationally.
Julian designed strategy.
Gabriel controlled the money.
For decades, he had served Carlo while quietly preserving Cross's network.
“He told Julian everything,” Vale said. “Every account. Every deal. Every weakness.”
Moretti sat back.
His entire inheritance had been compromised before it became his.
Clara recognized the expression.
Betrayal by someone trusted enough to become invisible.
“Where is he?” Agent Brooks asked.
Vale shook his head.
“I don't know.”
“Guess.”
“He keeps a place near Hudson Yards.”
They found it empty.
But security cameras showed Gabriel leaving twenty minutes earlier.
Heading toward the Sapphire Lounge.
Clara stared at the screen.
“My building.”
Moretti looked at her.
“Our—”
She raised an eyebrow.
He corrected himself.
“Your building.”
“Why go there?”
Then Clara remembered the cassette compartment.
If Isabella hid one recording, maybe others existed.
Gabriel had spent decades inside Moretti businesses.
He might know exactly what remained.
Federal agents raced downtown.
Clara went too.
Nobody argued this time.
At the club, the front doors were unlocked.
No alarms.
Inside, lights were off.
Clara entered behind Agent Brooks.
The empty Sapphire Lounge looked almost peaceful.
They moved downstairs.
Wine cellar.
Hidden panel open.
Inside, the cassette recorder was gone.
Moretti swore.
“He took Carlo's tape.”
“Why?” Clara asked.
“Because it proves my father knew Cross framed Alessandro.”
“But that's historical.”
Alessandro entered behind them.
“Not if there's another recording.”
They searched the compartment.
Empty.
Clara ran her hand along the wood.
Something shifted.
A second false back.
Behind it lay another cassette.
Gabriel had missed it.
Label:
FOR CLARA.
She stared.
Moretti found a player.
Clara inserted the tape.
Her mother's voice.
“Clara, if you're hearing this, you've already learned too much too quickly.”
Clara smiled despite herself.
Definitely her mother.
“I imagine your father is hovering nearby.”
Alessandro laughed softly.
“He is.”
Isabella continued.
“And Carlo's son may be there too.”
Moretti raised an eyebrow.
Clara whispered, “She was terrifying.”
“Yes,” Alessandro said fondly.
The recording changed tone.
“Julian Cross is dangerous, but he is not the only person responsible.”
Everyone became still.
“Someone close to Carlo has been feeding him information.”
Moretti leaned forward.
“I do not know his identity.”
A pause.
“But I know this: the person signed transactions using the initials G.R.”
Moretti closed his eyes.
Gabriel Rossi.
Isabella had discovered him twenty-three years earlier.
Why had nothing happened?
The tape answered.
“I told Carlo. He refused to believe me.”
Moretti looked down.
“Carlo said Gabriel had saved his life once and would never betray him.”
Alessandro shook his head.
“Carlo.”
Again, loyalty had become blindness.
The recording continued.
“If Gabriel remains near the family, Julian's network will survive.”
Then something unexpected.
“If you're hearing this as an adult, Clara, do not spend your life fixing our mistakes.”
Clara felt tears rise.
“Expose the truth. Then walk away.”
Tape ended.
Silence.
Moretti stared at the machine.
“My father knew.”
“He was warned,” Alessandro corrected.
“He didn't believe.”
“No.”
Moretti's anger turned inward.
“How many times can one family make the same mistake?”
Clara looked at him.
“As many times as they keep calling it tradition.”
He almost laughed.
Agent Brooks received an alert.
“Rossi's vehicle found.”
“Where?”
“West Side Highway.”
“Empty?”
“Yes.”
Another agent entered.
“We found something in the trunk.”
A black folder.
Inside were passports.
Cash.
And one handwritten note.
VINCENZO WILL TAKE THE FALL.
Moretti read it.
“Not anymore.”
His phone rang.
Gabriel Rossi.
Moretti answered.
“Gabriel.”
The older man's voice sounded almost fatherly.
“I wish you had left this alone.”
“You framed me.”
“I protected what Carlo built.”
“By destroying his son?”
“By preventing you from destroying everything with your arrogance.”
Moretti's expression hardened.
“Where are you?”
“Somewhere your father once trusted me.”
Moretti looked at Alessandro.
Old property.
Carlo's places.
Then realization.
“The cemetery.”
Gabriel laughed softly.
“Come alone.”
The line ended.
Agent Brooks shook her head.
“You are absolutely not going alone.”
Moretti almost smiled.
“I've finally learned that lesson.”
They arrived at Calvary Cemetery before dawn.
Gabriel stood beside Carlo Moretti's grave.
No weapon visible.
No escape vehicle.
He looked seventy.
Tired.
Moretti stopped ten feet away.
“Why?”
Gabriel looked at Carlo's headstone.
“Because your father became weak.”
“You betrayed him for twenty-three years.”
“I preserved him.”
“No. You preserved your power.”
Gabriel finally looked at Vincenzo.
“You were never meant to inherit.”
Moretti went still.
“What?”
“Carlo planned to remove you.”
Clara watched from behind the investigators.
Gabriel continued.
“He thought your temper would destroy the family.”
Moretti's face tightened.
“He was right about one thing.”
He looked toward Clara.
“My temper nearly destroyed someone innocent.”
Then back to Gabriel.
“But being wrong once doesn't mean I have to spend my life staying wrong.”
Gabriel's expression changed.
He had expected rage.
Instead received accountability.
It left him with nothing to manipulate.
Agents moved forward.
Gabriel did not resist.
As they led him away, he looked at Alessandro.
“You think this ends with me?”
Alessandro answered.
“No.”
Gabriel smiled.
“Good.”
“Because it ends with the truth.”
That smile disappeared.
By sunrise, Cross, Vale, Rossi, and several accomplices were in custody.
The conspiracy was collapsing.
But Moretti's forged records had already begun leaking online.
His companies were falling.
Banks froze accounts.
Partners withdrew.
And the organization Vincenzo inherited from his father began breaking apart in real time.
He stood outside the cemetery watching his phone fill with messages.
Clara approached.
“What are you going to do?”
He looked at her.
“For the first time in my life?”
“Yes.”
“I don't know.”
Clara nodded.
May you like
“Maybe that's where you start.”
