Chapter 9 - The Arrest That Changed Everything

Giovanni was arrested before sunrise.

The photograph traveled around the world.

The feared Giovanni Rossi, wrists cuffed, expression cold, Isadora standing behind him in the snow.

By noon, everyone knew her name too.

WAITRESS DEFENDS ACCUSED CRIME BOSS.

WOMAN WHO HUMILIATED ROSSI REFUSES TO ABANDON HIM.

The internet loved the contradiction.

A waitress.

A billionaire.

A public humiliation.

A missing brother.

A dead father.

And now a scandal.

Isadora hated every headline.

But she understood attention could become protection.

So she did something Gio’s lawyers advised against.

She spoke publicly.

Standing outside the courthouse, wearing the same black coat she had owned for five years, she faced dozens of cameras.

“I’m not here to tell anyone Giovanni Rossi is a saint.”

Reporters shouted.

She continued.

“I’m here because evidence should be evidence—not theater.”

The crowd quieted.

“I have watched people with powerful names erase the truth for years. I will not help them do it again.”

The clip reached twelve million views overnight.

Inside detention, Gio watched it on a small television.

Luca stood beside his lawyer.

“She’s either very brave or completely insane.”

Gio almost smiled.

“She’s both.”

The public pressure worked.

Investigators began scrutinizing Carlo’s documents.

Digital signatures didn’t match.

Dates conflicted.

Two accounts supposedly controlled by Gio had been closed years earlier.

Forty-eight hours later, Gio was released pending investigation.

Isadora waited outside.

He walked toward her.

Hundreds of cameras recorded them.

“Did I ask you to become my spokesperson?” he murmured.

“No.”

“You called me ‘not a saint’ on international television.”

“Would you prefer liar?”

“No.”

She smiled.

“Then you’re welcome.”

He stopped in front of her.

“Why did you do it?”

She looked around at the cameras.

“Ask me somewhere private.”

At the villa, she answered.

“Because Carlo expected everyone to be afraid of your name.”

She removed her coat.

“I thought maybe it was time someone used your name to force people to look closer.”

Gio stared at her.

“You’re dangerous.”

“So I’ve been told.”

Then Luca entered.

“We found the sealed cellar beneath La Corona.”

Gio stood.

They drove immediately.

Behind an old wine rack, workers had uncovered a steel door.

Vittorio’s fingerprints still existed in the old access system.

The emergency code was Giovanni’s birthday.

The lock opened.

Inside sat shelves of documents.

Recordings.

Bank statements.

And one black leather ledger.

Marco stared.

“That’s it.”

Isadora reached toward it.

Gio stopped her.

A thin wire was attached underneath.

“Don’t.”

He crouched.

Not explosive.

An alarm.

Someone had opened the room recently.

Dust on the floor confirmed it.

Fresh footprints crossed the stone.

Then they heard applause from behind.

Matteo stood in the doorway.

He smiled sadly.

May you like

“I was wondering when you would finally find it.”
