Chapter 15 - Dante Caruso Came Alone

Dante did not shout.

He did not demand details.

He simply asked, “Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Michael?”

“I don't know.”

Her breathing shook.

“Moretti knew about Ruiz's tracker. Someone inside the operation tipped him off.”

Dante's eyes moved toward Nico.

Nico was already calling Ruiz.

“Where are you?”

“Basement.”

“Alone?”

“For now.”

A sound in the background.

Clare whispered, “I have to go.”

“Clare.”

“Yes?”

“I am coming.”

“Alone.”

Dante understood.

“He said alone?”

“Yes.”

“If I don't see you by eight-thirty, he—”

Her voice broke.

“He says he'll hurt my father.”

“I'll be there.”

“Dante.”

“Yes?”

A pause.

“I am sorry.”

“No.”

“I left angry.”

“You had every right.”

“I should have called.”

“No.”

“I—”

Footsteps.

Clare whispered, “Please hurry.”

The line died.

Dante looked at Nico.

“No.”

Nico anticipated it.

“You cannot actually intend to go alone.”

“He has Clare and Michael.”

“And he wants you.”

“Yes.”

“Exactly.”

Ruiz arrived by phone.

“We can have tactical teams around the building in twelve minutes.”

“Too long.”

“Caruso, do not enter.”

“He threatened Michael at eight-thirty.”

“We need time.”

Dante checked his watch.

Sixteen minutes.

“No.”

“If you go inside, you may make everything worse.”

“Then I make it worse.”

He took his coat.

Nico followed.

Dante stopped him.

“Stay.”

“Absolutely not.”

“Clare asked me alone.”

“Moretti asked you alone.”

“Yes.”

“And you're going to respect his boundaries now?”

Despite everything, Dante almost laughed.

“Nico.”

“No.”

Dante stepped closer.

“If I do not come out, you protect her.”

Nico's face changed.

“That is not funny.”

“It wasn't intended to be.”

“Boss.”

“Please.”

That word again.

Nico looked away.

Then nodded.

“Ten minutes.”

“What?”

“You get ten minutes before I stop respecting everybody's wishes.”

Dante left.

Saint Anthony's had been closed for eight years.

The parish hall stood behind the abandoned church.

Brick.

Boarded windows.

One exterior light.

Dante parked across the street.

No visible guards.

That meant nothing.

He walked to the entrance.

Hands visible.

No weapon.

The door opened.

Edward Russo stood there.

Tommy's brother.

Dante's expression hardened.

“You.”

Edward looked ashamed.

“I didn't have a choice.”

“Everyone says that before betraying someone.”

“Salvatore has my daughter.”

Dante stopped.

Another hostage.

Moretti's favorite currency.

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

“Clare?”

“Basement.”

“Michael?”

“Same.”

“Salvatore?”

“Inside.”

Edward searched Dante.

Found nothing.

“You came unarmed.”

“Clare asked me to.”

Edward stared.

Perhaps expecting a trick.

There wasn't one.

He led Dante downstairs.

The basement had once been a community room.

Folding tables.

Stacked chairs.

Bare bulbs.

Clare sat near the wall.

Hands free.

Michael beside her.

Salvatore Moretti stood near an old stage.

Late sixties.

Elegant coat.

Silver hair.

Nothing about him looked monstrous.

That was the disturbing part.

Clare saw Dante.

Relief hit her face.

Then guilt.

Dante looked only at her.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

Michael nodded too.

Moretti smiled.

“Romantic.”

Dante turned.

“Let them go.”

“You walked in without a negotiation.”

“There is nothing to negotiate.”

“Always your father's son.”

“Do not mention him.”

Moretti's smile widened.

“There he is.”

Clare stood.

A guard moved toward her.

Dante's body tensed.

Moretti lifted one hand.

“Let her stand.”

Clare moved beside Michael.

Moretti looked at Dante.

“You have destroyed my business.”

“You destroyed it.”

“You gave federal agents records that implicate your own companies.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Dante looked at Clare.

“Because someone reminded me that inherited sins are still choices if you keep repeating them.”

Clare's eyes filled.

Moretti laughed.

“Love.”

He said it like a disease.

“Vittorio suffered from it too.”

Dante's expression changed.

“You think fear is strength.”

“I survived.”

“So did cockroaches.”

Clare made a sound suspiciously close to a laugh.

Moretti's eyes moved toward her.

Dante stepped between them instinctively.

Moretti noticed.

“See?”

“What do you want?”

“A car.”

“No.”

“A private plane.”

“No.”

“Access to one account the federal government hasn't frozen.”

“No.”

Moretti's amusement faded.

“You came to negotiate without anything to offer.”

“I came to take Clare and Michael home.”

“You really believe you're leaving?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Dante looked toward Edward.

Because Edward had been trembling since they entered.

Because the two guards were nervous.

Because Moretti's empire was collapsing.

Because frightened men followed power only while they believed it would survive.

“You have no organization left.”

Moretti's jaw tightened.

“Your accounts are frozen. Your people are cooperating. Federal teams are outside.”

Moretti's eyes flashed toward Edward.

Edward looked down.

Dante continued.

“The only thing keeping these men beside you is fear.”

He addressed the guards.

“He cannot pay you.”

No response.

“He cannot protect your families.”

Still nothing.

“He cannot even protect himself.”

Moretti drew a handgun.

Clare inhaled sharply.

Dante did not move.

“You see?” Moretti said. “Fear works.”

The weapon pointed toward Dante.

Clare stepped forward.

“Salvatore.”

“Stay back,” Dante said.

She ignored him.

Of course.

Moretti looked at her.

“You wanted me because you thought Dante loved me.”

“Yes.”

“You were right.”

Dante's eyes closed briefly.

Not the time.

Clare continued.

“But you misunderstood what that means.”

Moretti tilted his head.

“You thought loving someone makes them obedient.”

Dante looked at her.

Clare looked back.

“No.”

Her voice softened.

“It makes you trust them even when you're scared.”

Dante understood.

Outside, eight minutes had passed.

Nico had promised ten.

Clare had noticed an emergency exit behind the stacked chairs.

Michael had noticed too.

Edward stood closest.

Clare met his eyes.

One glance.

Then another toward the exit.

Edward moved.

He knocked over a metal chair.

The crash startled everyone.

Michael pulled Clare backward.

Dante lunged toward Moretti.

The gun fired into the ceiling.

Plaster fell.

Chaos.

No graphic violence.

Just movement.

Edward opened the emergency door.

Federal agents surged inside.

Moretti was tackled.

The gun skidded across the floor.

One guard surrendered.

The other ran directly into Nico.

Bad choice.

Within seconds it was over.

Clare stood against the wall, breathing hard.

Dante crossed the room.

Stopped two feet away.

He did not grab her.

Did not assume.

“Can I?”

Clare's face crumpled.

She stepped into him.

Dante wrapped both arms around her.

For the first time since the diner, Clare felt completely safe without feeling controlled.

Because he had asked.

Because she had chosen.

His voice shook against her hair.

“I love you.”

There.

Finally.

No elegant speech.

No perfect timing.

Clare laughed through tears.

“You picked a basement hostage situation?”

“I panicked.”

She pulled back.

“You don't panic.”

“You have destroyed my reputation.”

“Good.”

Dante touched her face.

“I love you.”

Clare looked into the eyes that had frightened an entire diner.

“I love you too.”

Behind them, Nico sighed.

“Could we perhaps do this after the arrests?”

Clare laughed.

Even Dante smiled.

Moretti was taken away.

Michael was safe.

Edward's daughter was found unharmed within two hours.

The nightmare should have ended there.

But when Agent Ruiz searched Moretti's belongings, she discovered one final document.

A contract.

Signed three months earlier.

Moretti had not merely targeted Dante's family.

He had placed a price on Dante Caruso himself.

May you like

And the person who accepted that contract had not yet been identified.
