Chapter 5 - Rosa's Promise

Darkness swallowed the warehouse.

Dante moved before anyone else.

“Sophia, down!”

She pulled Anthony from the chair.

Glass shattered.

Enzo's men spread through the building.

No gunfire came.

Instead, smoke rolled beneath the doors.

Dante understood.

“Fire.”

Ferrante wasn't trying to kill them with bullets.

He was trapping them.

Sophia coughed.

“Back exit!”

“Blocked,” Enzo shouted.

Sophia looked upward.

An old loading mechanism hung above them.

She remembered seeing exterior stairs when they arrived.

“There!”

She pointed toward a maintenance platform.

“If we reach that catwalk, there's a window near the fire escape.”

Dante looked.

She was right.

They climbed.

Anthony struggled.

Sophia refused to leave him.

Smoke thickened.

Halfway up, Dante pushed Anthony ahead and turned back for Sophia.

“I can climb!”

“I know.”

“Then stop grabbing me.”

“You can yell at me outside.”

They reached the window.

Enzo broke it.

Cold air rushed in.

One by one they crossed.

Sophia emerged last.

She stood coughing on the fire escape while flames glowed behind the windows.

Dante gripped her shoulders.

“You're hurt?”

“No.”

“Look at me.”

“I said no.”

He searched her face anyway.

Sophia slapped his hands away.

“I'm fine.”

Then she hugged him.

It happened before either could think.

Dante froze.

Sophia's face pressed against his chest.

His arms slowly closed around her.

For perhaps ten seconds, there were no families.

No debts.

No alliances.

Just two people relieved the other was alive.

Then Sophia stepped away.

Anthony saw everything.

His shame deepened.

At the estate the next morning, Anthony told the truth.

All of it.

The gambling.

Ferrante.

Vanessa.

The drive.

“I thought if I did what she asked, the debt would disappear.”

Sophia sat across from him.

“You always think the next thing will fix the last thing.”

He cried.

“I know.”

“No. You know afterward.”

That silenced him.

“You used my name.”

“I know.”

“You let men come looking for me.”

“I know.”

“You lied to get me into Queens.”

“I know.”

She leaned forward.

“I love you, Dad. But loving you is destroying me.”

Anthony covered his face.

Sophia cried too.

“I can't keep saving you.”

Dante watched from the doorway.

Those words stayed with him.

Later Elena took Sophia into the sunroom.

She carried Rosa's recipe box.

“There is something inside.”

Beneath the wooden lining was a folded letter.

Elena handed it to Sophia.

Rosa had written it decades earlier.

Not to Sophia.

To Dante.

Sophia read silently.

Rosa described Elena arriving at the bakery terrified and heavily pregnant. Men searched the building. Rosa hid Elena beneath sacks of flour in the cellar.

One man put a pistol against Rosa's chest.

She lied anyway.

Why?

Rosa's letter answered.

A child should never inherit the price of his father's enemies.

Sophia's hands shook.

Dante entered.

Elena nodded toward the letter.

Sophia handed it to him.

He read.

The feared Dante Moretti sat down.

For a long time he stared at Rosa's handwriting.

“She knew me before I existed.”

Elena touched his shoulder.

“She protected you before I could.”

Dante looked at Sophia.

“I accused her granddaughter.”

“You doubted me,” Sophia said.

“Yes.”

No excuses.

“I was wrong.”

Sophia nodded.

“I know.”

That evening Dante found her in the garden.

“I canceled the engagement.”

Sophia looked at him.

“Because of Vanessa?”

“Because there shouldn't have been one.”

She waited.

“I spent years accepting whatever strengthened the family.”

“And now?”

“Now I know strength that costs everyone their choices isn't strength.”

Sophia smiled faintly.

“Did your mother tell you to say that?”

“She used more profanity.”

Sophia laughed.

Dante stepped closer.

“I almost lost you last night.”

“You didn't.”

“I thought I might.”

His hand rose.

He stopped before touching her.

Sophia noticed.

Permission.

For the first time, he was waiting for it.

She closed the distance herself.

Their kiss was quiet.

No explosion.

No dramatic surrender.

Just warmth after months of resisting it.

When they separated, Sophia rested her forehead against his.

“This doesn't fix everything.”

“I know.”

“Good.”

His phone rang.

Dante ignored it.

It rang again.

Enzo appeared at the garden door.

“Boss.”

Something in his voice changed the night.

Dante answered.

His expression hardened.

“What?”

Enzo looked at Sophia.

“Ferrante knows about Rosa.”

Sophia went still.

“How?”

“We don't know.”

Dante's phone buzzed.

A photograph appeared.

Rosa's grave.

Taken that afternoon.

Another photograph followed.

Sophia leaving the estate.

Then another.

Sophia at Veluto months earlier.

Someone had been watching her longer than Vanessa's investigation.

Much longer.

A message appeared beneath the photographs.

Rosa kept Elena Moretti alive once. Her granddaughter won't get the same chance.

Dante looked up.

“Sophia.”

But the garden gate behind her was already swinging open.

May you like

A black van accelerated into the darkness.

Sophia was gone.
