Chapter 15 - When Viktor Finally Told the Truth

By noon, Mara’s face was on every major news site in New York.

SECRET PIERCE HEIR REVEALED.

WAITRESS LINKED TO DYNASTIC BUSINESS WAR.

MAFIA BOSS, WAITRESS, AND BILLION-DOLLAR TRUST.

That last headline made Mara throw her phone onto the sofa.

“I hate the internet.”

Daniel handed it back.

“You need this.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“I want 1997 back.”

“You were an infant.”

“Exactly. No responsibilities.”

Pierce’s press conference had been masterful.

He described Mara as a beloved half-sister he had only recently discovered.

He expressed concern that Viktor Kovacs was manipulating her.

He claimed the employee trust had been engineered by the Kovacs family to steal Pierce assets.

He never mentioned buying Mara’s debt.

Never mentioned Elaine’s documents.

Never mentioned the forged authorization.

“He made me sound like a hostage,” Mara said.

Viktor stood across the room.

“Then we correct the record.”

“How?”

“Press conference.”

“No.”

“Mara.”

“No.”

Rachel looked up.

“She may be right. Public dueling helps Pierce.”

Viktor paced.

“He is using my name to discredit her.”

Mara watched him.

That anger was not about business.

It was about her.

“Viktor.”

He stopped.

“I don’t care what strangers think about us.”

“I do.”

“Why?”

“Because my reputation hurts you.”

“Only if I let it.”

His face tightened.

“You do not understand.”

“Then explain.”

Silence.

Rachel and Daniel suddenly found reasons to leave.

The door closed.

Mara crossed her arms.

“Explain.”

Viktor walked to the window.

“My father was investigated repeatedly.”

“I know.”

“I was questioned for the first time at nineteen.”

“Okay.”

“By twenty-three, I had learned that fear solved problems faster than law.”

Mara waited.

“I used that.”

“How?”

“People owed my father money. I collected.”

Her stomach tightened.

“You hurt them?”

“Sometimes.”

The answer was quiet.

Mara looked away.

He continued.

“I did not kill people. I did not order disappearances. But I threatened men. Ruined businesses. Used information to force agreements.”

The silence became heavy.

“Why tell me now?”

“Because Pierce will.”

Mara turned back.

“And because you deserve to know before deciding what I am to you.”

The honesty hurt.

“What changed?”

Viktor looked down.

“My mother disappeared. My father died. I inherited companies filled with men who expected me to behave exactly as he did.”

“So you did.”

“At first.”

“And then?”

“I met an accountant whose husband had borrowed from one of our companies. He could not pay. My people threatened his business.”

Viktor’s expression shifted with memory.

“The man had a daughter.”

Mara remained silent.

“She was nine. She walked into the office carrying a school backpack while I was telling her father what would happen if he missed another payment.”

“What did you do?”

“I looked at her.”

He swallowed.

“And realized I sounded exactly like my father.”

“What happened to the debt?”

“I canceled it.”

“That fixes one family.”

“I know.”

“So?”

“I spent the next ten years changing what I could.”

Mara walked closer.

“Why keep the reputation?”

“Because it protected the transition.”

“Or because part of you liked it?”

Viktor met her eyes.

“Yes.”

The admission mattered.

“Power becomes addictive.”

“Yes.”

“Fear too?”

“Yes.”

Mara breathed out.

“I don’t know what to do with that.”

“You do not have to do anything.”

“I care about you.”

“I know.”

“That makes this harder.”

“I know.”

She almost smiled.

“You saying ‘I know’ repeatedly is not helping.”

“Sorry.”

She sat.

“Are there people who still hate you for things you actually did?”

“Yes.”

“People you owe?”

“Yes.”

“Then repair it.”

“I have tried.”

“Try publicly.”

He frowned.

“Pierce wants to make you look dangerous. Fine. Don’t tell people you changed. Show them.”

“How?”

Mara thought.

“Open the records.”

His face changed.

“What?”

“Every company from your father’s period. Every settlement. Every questionable acquisition. Let independent lawyers review it.”

“That could destroy me.”

“Yes.”

He stared.

“Possibly criminal exposure.”

“Yes.”

“You understand what you are asking?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you told me you don’t want to be your father.”

Her voice softened.

“Then stop asking the world to trust your word.”

Viktor turned away.

For a long time he said nothing.

Mara knew she had pushed too far.

Then he picked up his phone.

“Rachel.”

A pause.

“Come back.”

Rachel entered.

Viktor looked at her.

“Prepare voluntary disclosure.”

Rachel froze.

“All historical records?”

“All.”

“Viktor.”

“All.”

She studied him.

Then nodded.

When she left, Mara whispered, “You don’t have to do this because of me.”

“I’m not.”

He looked at her.

“I’m doing it because you are right.”

Three days later Viktor Kovacs held his own press conference.

He did not attack Pierce.

He did not deny his past.

He acknowledged using coercive business practices in his twenties.

He announced independent review of company archives.

He pledged restitution where wrongdoing could be proven.

The press room erupted.

Markets reacted.

Board members panicked.

Pierce called him suicidal.

Mara watched from backstage.

When Viktor finished, he walked toward her.

“How bad?”

“Your lawyers look like they aged ten years.”

“Reasonable.”

“Your stock fell six percent.”

“Only six?”

She smiled.

Then he stopped in front of her.

“I may lose everything.”

“No.”

“What makes you so certain?”

“Because even if you lose the companies, you still keep the part you finally chose for yourself.”

He looked at her.

“What part?”

“The man who told the truth.”

Viktor kissed her forehead.

Cameras captured it.

By evening, the photograph was everywhere.

Mara expected panic.

Instead, she looked at the image and smiled.

Then Rachel called.

The independent review had uncovered something unexpected.

A set of transfers made eleven years earlier.

Millions of dollars.

Authorized by Sebastian Pierce.

Approved under a forged Kovacs signature.

And routed through an account controlled by Daniel Mercer’s deceased father.

Daniel was not merely Elaine’s trusted friend.

May you like

His family was connected to the conspiracy too.
