Chapter 15 - The Truth Hilton’s Wife Left Behind

Hilton finally cleaned Elizabeth's room.
Min did not help.
Not because she refused.
Because Hilton needed to do it himself.
He folded Elizabeth's dresses.
He gave some to families in town.
He kept one blue shawl.
He placed her letters in a wooden box.
Then he carried her photograph into the main room.
Min saw it.
“You not put away?”
“No.”
“Why?”
Hilton looked at Elizabeth’s smiling face.
“Because loving you doesn't require pretending I never loved her.”
Min's eyes filled.
She took Jian’s pendant from her pocket.
“And loving you not erase Jian.”
“No.”
They placed the photograph and pendant on the mantel.
Two lives.
Two histories.
Neither hidden.
That evening Hilton found one final note from Elizabeth.
It was not about Mercer.
It was an ordinary grocery list.
Flour.
Coffee.
Apples.
And beneath it:
Hilton, remember to live a little.
He laughed until tears came.
Min found him.
He handed her the note.
She read it.
Then smiled.
“Smart woman.”
“She would have liked you.”
“You think?”
“She would have told me you're too good for me.”
Min considered.
“Also smart.”
Hilton laughed again.
May you like
The house no longer sounded empty.
