Chapter 18 - When Ghost Finally Stopped Running

Summer transformed the ranch.
Grass covered the hills.
The barn was rebuilt.
Arthur repaired the fences instead of merely patching them.
Leanne planted vegetables and herbs.
She also planted flowers beside Anna and Samuel’s graves.
Arthur asked why.
“Because remembering someone does not have to mean remembering only how they died.”
Arthur carried those words with him.
One evening he entered Samuel’s room.
He opened the curtains.
Then the window.
Fresh air moved through.
He did not remove Samuel’s belongings.
He did not need to.
The room no longer felt like a tomb.
Outside, Leanne stood near Ghost.
The mare had changed too.
She allowed Leanne to touch her.
Eventually she allowed Arthur.
One evening Arthur approached carrying a saddle.
He stopped several feet away.
Ghost watched him.
Arthur put the saddle down.
No ropes.
No force.
He waited.
Ghost approached.
Arthur touched her neck.
The mare did not retreat.
Leanne watched from the fence.
“You stopped trying to break her,” she said.
Arthur looked toward her.
“I think she stopped trying to break me too.”
Months later Arthur asked Leanne to marry him.
There was no crowd.
No expensive ring.
He gave her a simple silver band.
Leanne looked at it.
Then at him.
“You are certain?”
“For the first time in a long while.”
She said yes.
But before their wedding, Arthur made one request.
He wanted to visit Thomas Liang’s grave.
Together.
Arthur placed flowers there.
“Thank you,” he whispered.
Leanne looked at him.
“For what?”
Arthur took her hand.
“For loving the woman who taught me how to live again.”
Leanne cried.
Arthur held her.
Neither felt threatened by the ghosts of their former lives.
Love had not replaced Anna.
It had not replaced Thomas.
It had simply made room beside memory.

And that was enough.
