Chapter 15 - Evelyn’s Road

The road curved through mountains two hours north of the city.

Aaron drove.

At the overlook, we stopped.

A small marker had been placed there after the investigation closed.

EVELYN HALE

BELOVED WIFE, MOTHER, GRANDMOTHER

TRUTH OUTLIVES FEAR

I touched the engraved letters.

“I barely remember her.”

Aaron stood behind me.

“You remember enough.”

“My grandfather spent the rest of his life trying to uncover what happened.”

“He did.”

“What if that prevented him from living?”

Aaron considered it.

“Maybe. Or maybe protecting you was part of how he lived.”

I looked at him.

“You always have answers now?”

“No. Therapy.”

I laughed through tears.

We remained until sunset.

Before leaving, I placed my grandfather's copied letter beside the marker.

Not because Evelyn could read it.

Because I could finally stop carrying it.

On the drive home, I realized I had spent years defining strength as endurance.

Grandfather had taught me something different.

Strength was choosing.

Leaving when leaving was necessary.

Returning only when returning was healthy.

Forgiving without forgetting.

Loving without surrendering yourself.

I looked at Aaron.

“Ask me again.”

He glanced over.

“What?”

“The question.”

His hands tightened on the wheel.

“Claire—”

“Ask.”

He pulled into an overlook.

Turned off the engine.

Then looked at me.

“Would you ever marry me again?”

“Yes.”

He stared.

I smiled.

“Yes, Aaron.”

He laughed.

Then cried.

Then laughed because he was crying.

And for once, I loved the imperfectness of him more than I had ever loved the polished version.

But I had conditions.

Of course I did.

And when I told him the first one, he laughed even harder.

“No Prescott Global Slack announcement?”

“Absolutely not.”

“Fair.”

The second condition was more serious.

“If we do this, we don't recreate what we had.”

“We won't.”

“This is not a continuation.”

“No.”

“It is a new marriage.”

Aaron took my hand.

May you like

“A new marriage.”

And this time, I believed him.
