Chapter 3 - The Secret Jessica Found

For the first time since learning I was being poisoned, I felt genuinely afraid.

Not of David.

Of Jessica.

David was predictable.

He wanted money.

Jessica wanted something else.

Samuel sent me an urgent message.

She knows about your company.

I stared at the screen.

HOW?

His answer came quickly.

Still investigating.

I wanted to sit up.

I couldn't.

My body had become a prison.

Every breath was work.

Every movement required concentration.

But my mind was clear.

Clearer than it had been in years.

I had spent my life building companies, negotiating contracts, designing buildings, and solving impossible problems.

Now my greatest project was staying alive long enough to expose a murderer.

That night, I watched the footage.

Jessica and David were in the study again.

She held a folder.

"Your wife isn't who you think she is."

David laughed.

"What does that mean?"

"She's richer."

His smile disappeared.

Jessica placed a document on the desk.

"Much richer."

David stared at it.

"Where did you get this?"

"I have sources."

"What sources?"

She smiled.

"You don't need to know."

David picked up the document.

His face changed as he read.

I could almost see the moment greed replaced confusion.

"Billions?"

Jessica nodded.

"More than you imagined."

David sat down.

For months, he had believed he was murdering a wealthy woman.

Now he realized he had underestimated the size of the prize.

Jessica leaned against the desk.

"That's why you can't make mistakes."

David looked at her.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean you need to make sure she dies naturally."

"I know."

"No."

Jessica shook her head.

"You don't."

She tapped the folder.

"Her assets are complicated."

David looked nervous.

"What are you suggesting?"

"I'm suggesting that if you want the money, you need to know exactly what you're inheriting."

David stood.

"You said the will was simple."

"I was wrong."

He stared at her.

"How wrong?"

Jessica smiled.

"Very."

I watched the footage with Samuel.

Then he said something that made me understand.

"She's trying to protect herself."

I blinked.

Samuel continued.

"Jessica knows enough about your wealth to realize David may not actually control it."

That meant Jessica wasn't just planning a life with David.

She was planning for the possibility that David would fail.

And that made her dangerous.

The next morning, David came into my room.

His behavior had changed.

He was more careful.

More observant.

He stared at me for several seconds.

"You know," he said softly, "I've always wondered how you built everything."

I didn't respond.

He smiled.

"You never talk about business."

He moved closer.

"Maybe you should have trusted me."

I looked at him.

For one terrifying second, I wondered whether he knew.

Then he kissed my forehead.

"I'll take care of everything."

He left.

I immediately contacted Samuel.

He suspects something.

Samuel replied:

Then we accelerate.

But there was a problem.

Protocol Black was designed to activate upon my death.

I needed to remain alive.

If David realized I was conscious, he might act immediately.

If I escaped too soon, we might lose the evidence.

So I had to keep pretending.

That afternoon, the hospital physician visited.

He reviewed my chart.

"I'm concerned," he said.

David stood beside him.

"How long?"

The doctor hesitated.

"We're talking about a very short window."

David lowered his head.

I watched him carefully.

The doctor continued.

"I would recommend preparing the family."

David nodded.

"I understand."

He touched my hand.

The doctor left.

David waited.

Then he smiled.

"You heard that, didn't you?"

I didn't move.

"Almost over."

He walked away.

Later that evening, something unexpected happened.

The nurse assigned to my room changed.

A woman named Evelyn entered.

She was older than most of the staff and had an unusually calm presence.

She checked my medication.

Then she looked at me.

Not at the machines.

Not at the chart.

At me.

She whispered:

"Don't be afraid."

My heart jumped.

She leaned closer.

"I know."

I couldn't move.

Her eyes flicked toward the camera.

Then back to me.

"I know what's happening."

The computer detected my eye movement.

WHO ARE YOU?

She smiled faintly.

"I used to work in toxicology."

My heart raced.

She continued quietly.

"I saw your lab report."

I stared at her.

"Someone buried it."

She adjusted my blanket.

"But someone forgot to bury me."

For the first time in months, I felt hope.

Evelyn wasn't just a nurse.

She had been one of the professionals who noticed inconsistencies in my original diagnosis.

She had questioned the doctors.

Then she had been transferred.

Now she had returned.

"I can help you," she whispered.

I blinked.

The computer translated:

HOW?

She leaned closer.

"By making sure you survive."

That night, Evelyn became the unexpected witness Samuel had been searching for.

She had seen David handling my food.

She had noticed that my symptoms worsened after meals.

She had questioned why my condition fluctuated depending on which nurse was present.

And she had secretly kept copies of records.

But there was something else.

Evelyn knew David had attempted to influence my medical treatment.

She had overheard him asking whether increasing certain medications could "make the decline look natural."

That was the missing piece.

The poisoning alone could be disputed.

The medical manipulation alone could be explained.

Together, they told a different story.

A deliberate plan.

A pattern.

A murder.

Samuel sent me a message.

We have enough evidence to move.

I hesitated.

NOT YET.

He asked:

Why?

I looked at the camera feed.

David was downstairs.

Jessica was beside him.

They were arguing.

Jessica slapped him.

David grabbed her arm.

Then she shouted:

"Your wife isn't going to leave you anything!"

David froze.

Jessica continued.

"I checked."

"You what?"

"I checked."

She smiled.

"And if you kill her without getting the money right, I'll make sure you go to prison alone."

David stared at her.

Jessica leaned close.

"Because I know exactly what you did."

The recording ended there.

I stared at the screen.

Jessica knew more than I thought.

But she had also just revealed something crucial.

She was afraid of David.

And frightened people sometimes made mistakes.

I sent Samuel one instruction.

Let them continue.

Then I added:

But prepare the police.

Because I had finally realized the truth.

The trap wasn't just closing around David.

May you like

It was closing around Jessica too.

And neither of them knew that the woman they believed was dying had already begun planning the moment she would sit up and speak.
