Chapter 8 - The Life After Truth

Daniel arrived at eight fifteen.

Snow had started again.

Not violently this time.

Quiet flakes drifted past the townhouse windows.

Richard had chosen the library.

Elizabeth's favorite room.

Books lined the walls.

A fire burned low.

The voice recorder sat on the coffee table.

Daniel saw Anna immediately.

His expression changed.

“You.”

Anna stood.

“Hello, Daniel.”

Richard watched both of them.

Daniel removed his coat.

“This is a mistake.”

Richard poured three glasses of water.

“No Scotch tonight.”

Daniel ignored the remark.

“You told me you thought she manipulated the recording.”

“I said it was possible.”

Daniel looked at the recorder.

“Where did that come from?”

Anna answered.

“Elizabeth.”

“You stole it.”

“No.”

“You stole confidential files. Why not this too?”

Richard stepped between them.

“Enough.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You have no idea what you're doing.”

“Probably true.”

Richard sat.

“But we're doing it anyway.”

Anna entered the password.

21497.

A tiny beep sounded.

Richard felt Elizabeth's absence fill the room before her voice even began.

Then he heard her.

“Anna, if you're hearing this, I hope I'm being ridiculous.”

Richard closed his eyes.

Elizabeth.

Alive.

Breathing.

Speaking.

“I hope a year from now we laugh about all of this.”

Richard's fingers dug into the chair.

Daniel stared at the fire.

The recording continued.

“I found the consulting payments. Daniel says they're legitimate. I don't believe him anymore.”

Daniel whispered, “Jesus.”

Richard raised a hand.

Elizabeth continued.

“I met Vanessa Pike in Chicago. She believes money was diverted through vendors connected to Daniel's family trust. But that's not what scares me.”

A pause.

Richard could hear Elizabeth breathing.

“I found payments to Adrian Kell.”

Daniel shifted.

Richard watched him.

Elizabeth's voice continued.

“Kell isn't just treating me. He's being paid to document me.”

Anna covered her mouth.

Richard did not move.

“I found reports describing me as anxious, paranoid, impulsive, emotionally unstable. Some of the language matches things Daniel has said to me privately.”

Daniel stood.

“This is absurd.”

“Sit down,” Richard said.

Daniel remained standing.

On the recorder, Elizabeth said, “I don't know if Richard knows.”

Richard's eyes filled.

“I don't think he does. God, I hope he doesn't.”

Richard looked away.

Daniel sat again.

“I tried telling him I don't trust the diagnosis. He thinks I'm frightened because I'm sick. Maybe I am sick. I don't know anymore. That's the worst part.”

Richard's chest broke open.

Every conversation.

Every pill.

Every moment she had asked him to listen.

He had believed doctors instead.

Elizabeth's voice shook.

“Anna believes the foundation payments started as theft. I think Daniel got scared when I noticed.”

Daniel whispered, “She was unwell.”

Richard slammed his palm onto the table.

“Not another word.”

The recording continued.

“If something happens to me, Anna, do not go to Richard until you know he is ready to question Daniel. He'll defend him. He's defended him our entire marriage.”

Richard closed his eyes.

True.

Brutally true.

Then Elizabeth laughed softly.

“I love that stubborn idiot more than anybody. That's part of the problem.”

Richard began crying before he realized it.

No dramatic collapse.

Just tears running silently down his face.

Anna looked away to give him privacy.

Daniel stared at the floor.

Elizabeth continued.

“The locket is for Richard. He'll recognize the date.”

The first section ended.

A beep sounded.

Anna looked at Richard.

“The final part.”

Richard nodded.

“Play it.”

Anna entered the password again.

Elizabeth's voice returned.

This time quieter.

“Daniel, if Richard made you listen to this, then there's still a chance you can tell him yourself.”

Daniel's head jerked up.

Richard stared at him.

Elizabeth continued.

“I know about Kell.”

Daniel whispered something.

Richard could not hear.

“I know you paid him. I know you wanted him to document me as unstable. I know why.”

Richard's heart stopped.

Daniel's face drained.

Elizabeth took a breath on the recording.

“You thought I was going to force Richard to remove you from Vaughn Holdings and order a forensic audit of the family office.”

Richard turned toward Daniel.

Daniel stared straight ahead.

“You thought if I was declared incompetent, nobody would believe what I found.”

Richard felt nauseated.

Elizabeth continued.

“But I don't think you meant for me to die.”

Daniel's eyes closed.

Anna looked at him.

The room went silent except for Elizabeth's voice.

“I think you panicked. I think you told yourself you were protecting the company, Richard, yourself, all the people who depended on you.”

Daniel's hands began trembling.

“I know you, Daniel.”

Richard had never seen him shake.

“You always find a moral explanation for whatever you need to do.”

Daniel stood.

“Turn it off.”

Richard did not move.

“Turn it off!”

“No.”

Elizabeth continued.

“The medication Kell gave me is making me worse. I stopped taking it yesterday. I'm going to an independent doctor tomorrow.”

Daniel staggered backward.

Richard looked at him.

“What happened tomorrow?”

Daniel said nothing.

Elizabeth's voice softened.

“If you're hearing this, something prevented me from fixing it myself.”

The next words were directed to Richard.

“Richard, please don't spend the rest of your life wondering whether you killed me by not listening.”

Richard broke.

His hand covered his mouth.

Elizabeth continued.

“You were distracted. You were stubborn. You trusted the wrong person. That's not the same as wanting this.”

Richard lowered his head.

Anna cried silently.

Even Daniel was crying now.

Then Elizabeth said, “Help Anna. Not because she needs saving. Because I helped destroy her life by asking her to stand beside me.”

The recorder clicked.

Silence.

Nobody moved.

Finally Richard looked at Daniel.

“What happened the next day?”

Daniel sat slowly.

His face had aged ten years.

“I went to see her.”

Richard's voice was barely audible.

“Why?”

“She called me.”

“What did she say?”

“That she had copies.”

“Of what?”

“The payments. Kell's reports. Everything.”

“And?”

Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.

“She said she was telling you.”

Richard felt his stomach tighten.

“What did you do?”

“I begged her not to.”

“Then?”

“She said it was over.”

Daniel's voice cracked.

“I called Kell.”

Anna whispered, “Why?”

Daniel stared at nothing.

“I asked him whether stopping the medication suddenly was dangerous.”

Richard's blood went cold.

“What did he say?”

“That it could be.”

Richard stood.

“You knew.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No. Not like that.”

“You knew she was in danger.”

“I thought she'd feel sick. Dizzy. I thought we'd have time.”

“What did you do?”

Daniel's voice collapsed.

“I did nothing.”

Richard stared.

“She called me that evening.”

Richard's hands curled into fists.

Daniel continued.

“She said her chest hurt.”

Anna covered her mouth.

“What did you tell her?” Richard asked.

Daniel began crying.

“I told her it was anxiety.”

Richard crossed the room before he knew he was moving.

Anna stepped between them.

“Richard.”

He stopped.

Barely.

Daniel looked up.

“She died forty minutes later.”

Richard's entire body shook.

“You could have called an ambulance.”

“I know.”

“You could have called me.”

“I know.”

“You let her die.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I know.”

The words fell softly.

May you like

That made them worse.
