Chapter 15 - THE BETRAYAL INSIDE HIS OWN FAMILY

Police surrounded Diane Harper’s house.
Ellie was kept several blocks away.
Philip remained inside.
Diane with him.
For twenty-seven minutes, nobody knew whether she was being held against her will.
Then Diane called 911 herself.
Philip had locked himself inside Thomas’s old office.
Diane was safe.
He had not harmed her.
He simply wanted Ellie.
Negotiators took over.
Philip refused to speak to anyone else.
Ellie listened from a command vehicle.
“Let me talk to him.”
The officer shook his head.
“We don’t advise—”
“He will keep doing this until someone stops giving him the performance he wants.”
Adrian looked at Ellie.
Not saying yes.
Not saying no.
Letting her decide.
Eventually police allowed a phone conversation.
Philip answered instantly.
“Ellie.”
“You need to come out.”
“You sound like them.”
“Who?”
“Everyone.”
“Maybe everyone is finally saying the same thing because you’re wrong.”
Philip laughed softly.
“You always were funny when you got angry.”
“I’m not angry.”
That surprised him.
“What are you?”
“Tired.”
Silence.
“Tired of explaining basic human behavior to you.”
His tone changed.
“You ruined my life.”
“No, Philip.”
“You took everything.”
“No.”
“You turned my family against me.”
“Martin told investigators you ordered Luca’s death.”
Another silence.
Philip’s voice became colder.
“My brother is weak.”
“Your brother told the truth.”
“He betrayed me.”
“There it is.”
“What?”
“Everybody betrays you eventually, right?”
Philip said nothing.
“Your employees.”
Silence.
“Vanessa.”
Silence.
“Martin.”
Silence.
“Me.”
Philip finally answered.
“You were supposed to be loyal.”
Ellie closed her eyes.
“I was.”
“You left.”
“You threw me into the street.”
“You pushed me.”
“No.”
“You humiliated me.”
“No.”
“You—”
“No, Philip.”
Her voice was calm.
“You don’t get to make me responsible for what you do anymore.”
The line went silent.
Ellie continued.
“You hit me because you wanted to.”
“You left me because you wanted to.”
“You stole money because you wanted to.”
“You lied because you wanted to.”
“You hurt people because you wanted to.”
“And now you’re alone because eventually everyone stopped accepting the story where your choices were someone else’s fault.”
Philip breathed heavily.
“You think Moretti is better?”
“This isn’t about Adrian.”
“It always is.”
“No.”
Ellie almost smiled.
“That’s what you still don’t understand.”
She looked through the windshield at flashing lights.
“This story isn’t about which man gets me.”
The officer beside her glanced over.
Ellie continued:
“It’s about the fact that I finally belong to myself.”
Philip said nothing for almost a minute.
Then the line disconnected.
Seven minutes later, the front door opened.
Philip stepped outside.
Hands visible.
No weapon.
No dramatic confrontation.
No heroic fight.
Just a man who had finally run out of rooms to control.
Police arrested him.
Diane watched from the porch.
Philip looked toward the road.
He couldn’t see Ellie.
But somehow he knew she was there.
For the first time, Ellie didn’t need him to see her.
She turned away before the police car left.
The arrest dominated national news.
Fraud.
Obstruction.
Stalking.
Protective-order violations.
Conspiracy allegations related to Luca Moretti’s death.
More charges expected.
Comment sections exploded.
Videos analyzing Ellie’s phone conversation accumulated millions of views.
But Ellie didn’t watch any of them.
She went home.
Made tea.
Sat beneath the maple tree.
And slept for ten hours.
The next morning Adrian arrived with breakfast.
“No champagne?” Ellie asked.
“It’s nine a.m.”
“You disappoint me.”
He handed her coffee.
They sat quietly.
Finally Adrian said:
“What now?”
Ellie looked at her house.
Her foundation.
The letter from the thirteen-year-old girl framed by the window.
“I think I find out.”
That afternoon, however, investigators called.
There was another problem.
Philip’s fraud network was larger than expected.
One person inside Adrian’s organization had helped him hide money.
The federal investigator said:
“We know who.”
Adrian’s expression tightened.
“Who?”
The answer stunned him.
His own uncle.
May you like
Salvatore Moretti.
The man who had helped raise Adrian after his father died.
