Chapter 5 - The BetrayalThey had forty-two minutes when Vincent finally admitted the truth.

Mara wished he had kept lying.
They were moving down the hidden service stairs when he stopped at level forty-six.
"Mara."
She kept walking.
"Not now."
"Now."
Something in his voice made her stop.
Samuel was several floors below, trying to reach the building's old network hub.
Vincent and Mara were alone.
"What?"
Vincent looked at the concrete floor.
"I knew your father was alive."
Mara stared.
"After St. Agnes?"
"Yes."
"How long?"
"Six months."
Her face went blank.
"Six months."
"I received a message."
"From Elias?"
"Yes."
"You knew."
"I knew he survived."
"And you said you watched him die."
"I thought he had."
"You lied to me tonight."
"Yes."
She hit him.
Vincent didn't move.
Mara hit him again.
"Six months."
"I couldn't tell you."
"Why?"
"He told me not to."
She laughed.
"My father tells you not to tell me he's alive, and you obey?"
"He said Calder was watching you."
"Calder was already watching me."
"I didn't know that."
"You knew enough."
Vincent's voice rose.
"He said if I contacted you, Calder would know the message got out."
"You could have found another way."
"I tried."
"No. You chose."
Vincent went quiet.
Mara stepped closer.
"You chose what you always choose. Control."
He accepted that.
It made her angrier.
"He sent something else," Vincent said.
"What?"
"A request."
Mara waited.
"He wanted me to find Helena."
"My mother."
"Yes."
"You knew she was alive too?"
"No."
"Did you find her?"
"Three months ago."
The air left Mara's chest.
"Where?"
"Boston."
"What did you do?"
"Moved her."
"Where?"
Vincent looked toward the stairs below.
Mara understood before he said it.
"Calder took her from you."
"Yes."
"When?"
"Eleven days ago."
Mara backed away.
"So this is your fault."
"Partly."
"Partly?"
"He found her because somebody inside my organization gave him the location."
"Who?"
"I don't know."
"You brought Calder to my mother."
"I brought her out of hiding because your father asked me to."
"Stop blaming him."
"I'm not."
"That's all you've done."
Mara turned away.
Vincent caught her arm.
She spun.
"Don't touch me."
He released her.
"I'm sorry."
She laughed.
"That's it?"
"No."
"Good, because sorry doesn't fix eighteen years."
Vincent's face tightened.
"I know."
"Do you?"
He looked at her.
"My father died believing I hated him."
Mara stopped.
Vincent rarely spoke about Enzo Moretti.
Even newspapers had little beyond the standard mythology.
Old-school crime boss.
Feared.
Respected.
Dead of a heart attack.
Vincent continued.
"He tried to leave Calder too."
"What happened?"
"Calder threatened me."
Mara listened.
"My father thought distance would protect me. He sent me to Europe. Cut contact. Made me think he'd chosen the organization over his family."
Vincent looked almost embarrassed by the memory.
"Eight years later, I found letters he'd written and never sent."
Mara said nothing.
"So yes. I know what it feels like when somebody lies because they love you."
His voice hardened.
"It doesn't make the lie hurt less."
For the first time, Mara believed he understood.
The timer on her visor read thirty-five minutes.
"Who betrayed you?" she asked.
"I don't know."
"Then we're walking into another trap."
"Yes."
"Good."
Vincent frowned.
"Good?"
"At least we're finally agreeing."
They reached level twelve.
Leon waited there.
Vincent stopped.
"You were supposed to secure the lobby."
Leon looked exhausted.
"Power's cycling."
"Where's Samuel?"
"Lower level."
Mara heard something in Leon's voice.
Small.
Too controlled.
Her head tilted.
"Where exactly?"
Leon looked at her.
"Sublevel one."
"Liar."
Vincent's eyes narrowed.
Leon moved backward.
Mara said, "His heart rate changed."
"You can hear that?"
"No."
She tapped the visor.
"I can see it."
Leon reached inside his jacket.
Vincent reacted first.
"Don't."
Leon froze.
Vincent stared at the man who had protected him for nine years.
"Tell me I'm wrong."
Leon swallowed.
"Boss."
"Tell me."
"I didn't have a choice."
Vincent's face changed.
Mara understood.
"You gave Calder Helena's location."
Leon looked at her.
"He had my daughter."
Vincent's anger stalled.
"What?"
"Three months."
Leon pulled out his phone and placed it on the floor.
"He showed me videos. School. Home. My ex-wife's apartment. He knew everything."
"Why didn't you come to me?"
"You would've gone after him."
"Yes."
"And he would've killed her."
Vincent stepped closer.
"Leon."
"I thought if I gave him the woman, he'd stop."
Mara's voice went cold.
"You traded my mother for your daughter."
Leon looked ashamed.
"Yes."
Mara wanted to hate him.
She did hate him.
But somewhere underneath that hatred was another truth.
Calder had designed it this way.
Fear turned people into weapons.
Vincent asked, "Where is Samuel?"
"Calder's men took him."
"Alive?"
"Yes."
"Where?"
"Sublevel four."
Mara checked the timer.
Twenty-eight minutes.
Leon looked at Vincent.
"He wants all of you downstairs."
"Then why are you warning us?"
Leon swallowed.
"Because he sent me one final instruction."
Vincent waited.
"Take Mara's keys and kill you."
Silence.
Vincent stared at him.
"And?"
Leon slowly removed the gun from his jacket.
Mara tensed.
Leon placed it on the floor.
"I've made enough bad decisions for one lifetime."
Vincent kicked the weapon away.
"Where's your daughter?"
"Calder's safe house in Jersey."
"You sure?"
"I tracked the last video."
Vincent pulled out his phone.
Still no signal.
Mara said, "Use the maintenance line on level eight. Old copper circuit. Calder can't lock it digitally."
Vincent looked at her.
"Your father's plans?"
"Yes."
He called one of his outside crews.
Mara listened as he gave one instruction.
"Get Leon's daughter. No violence unless necessary. Bring her somewhere safe."
Leon stared.
"Boss—"
"You're still fired."
Leon almost laughed.
Almost.
Then Mara's visor flashed.
Twenty-four minutes.
"No more time."
They reached the basement.
Sublevel one.
Then two.
Three.
The service staircase ended.
A steel door blocked the way.
Mara removed both rods from her back.
Vincent watched as she twisted the ends.
Instead of blades, thin metallic connectors slid out.
"You let my men think those were weapons."
"People behave differently when they think you're dangerous."
Vincent smiled faintly.
"Maybe you're learning from me."
"Don't ruin the moment."
She inserted both rods into two ports hidden beside the door.
The silver watch wafer went into a third.
The system activated.
A voice asked:
"Administrator identification."
Mara touched her visor.
"Mara Vale."
The door opened.
Beyond it was sublevel four.
The hidden heart of the building.
Rows of black servers stretched through a massive underground chamber.
At the center stood the glass room from the video.
Elias.
Helena.
Samuel.
Alive.
And Adrian Calder.
Vincent whispered, "Too easy."
Mara nodded.
"Yes."
Calder's voice came through overhead speakers.
"Welcome home."
Mara stepped forward.
The door slammed behind them.
Calder smiled through the glass.
"You brought me everything."
Mara stared at her parents.
Her mother pressed both hands against the glass.
Elias shook his head.
No.
Mara looked at Calder.
"You want the keys?"
"Very much."
"Let them go."
Calder laughed.
"Still bargaining like Elias."
Mara removed the first key.
"One."
Then the second.
"Two."
Then the watch wafer.
"Three."
Calder's eyes followed each movement.
Vincent whispered, "Mara."
She ignored him.
"Open the door," she said.
Calder smiled.
"Mara, don't," Elias shouted through the glass.
She could barely hear him.
She stepped toward the central console.
Vincent caught her shoulder.
"What are you doing?"
"Trust me."
"Based on what?"
"Nothing."
"Mara—"
"Exactly."
She inserted all three keys.
The entire room lit up.
Atlas awakened.
A countdown appeared overhead.
00:09:59.
Calder's smile widened.
Then the screen changed.
ADMINISTRATOR DECISION REQUIRED.
Three choices appeared.
ERASE.
RELEASE.
RECONCILE.
Calder's smile vanished.
Vincent looked at Mara.
"What is reconcile?"
Mara stared at the third option.
"I don't know."
Inside the glass room, Elias began pounding on the wall.
"Mara!"
She turned.
Her father pointed desperately at Calder.
Then at the screen.
Then he mouthed two words.
HE KNOWS.
Calder moved.
Not toward Mara.
Toward Helena.
He grabbed her arm.
Mara froze.
Calder's voice came through the speakers.
"Choose erase."
Mara stared.
"Or?"
May you like
Calder looked at her mother.
"Or you lose her twice."
