Chapter 4 - Page 47

The attack lasted seventeen seconds.

It felt longer.

Glass exploded across Arthur's library.

Adrian dragged Elena behind a stone wall while Marcus fired through the darkness.

Rebecca pulled Arthur into the hallway.

Two attackers entered through the rear.

Marcus dropped one.

Adrian tackled the second.

Then silence returned as quickly as it had left.

Sirens approached somewhere in the distance.

Marcus leaned against the wall, breathing hard.

"You still think I'm the enemy?"

Adrian took the attacker's weapon.

"I think tonight has too many volunteers."

They left before police arrived.

Arthur required surgery.

Rebecca took him to a private clinic under a false name.

Marcus wanted Adrian underground.

Elena refused.

"No more hiding."

"You were shot at twenty minutes ago," Marcus said.

"That's exactly why."

She looked at Adrian.

"They keep controlling where we go."

"Your suggestion?"

"Your penthouse."

Marcus stared.

"The compromised penthouse?"

"Yes."

Elena's voice stayed calm.

"They asked us to bring Page 47 there. Let's stop reacting and give them what they want."

Adrian understood.

"With one difference."

"We arrive first."

Forty minutes later, Manhattan glittered beneath a storm.

Adrian's penthouse occupied the upper floors of a tower overlooking Central Park and Midtown.

Rain crawled down the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Inside, the rooms were dark.

Marcus cleared them.

Nothing.

No attackers.

No staff.

No Ethan.

No Arthur.

No explanation.

Only the black marble desk.

The note remained.

BRING THE WOMAN AND PAGE 47 BEFORE 2:00 A.M.

1:41.

Elena placed the binder on the desk.

The sound echoed.

Marcus watched from across the room.

Adrian opened the binder.

Page 47.

His forged signature.

Arthur's photograph.

The transaction.

Ethan's name in Elena's version.

Rebecca's supposedly naming Arthur.

Arthur's naming Marcus.

Four pages.

Four accusations.

One truth.

The private elevator chimed.

Marcus raised his weapon.

Adrian didn't.

Arthur Pembroke entered.

Fresh bandage under a black coat.

Rebecca beside him.

"You left the clinic?" Adrian asked.

Arthur's mouth twisted.

"Doctors are extremely controlling."

"You were stabbed."

"British upbringing. We dislike making a fuss."

Elena almost smiled.

Then another elevator tone sounded.

Everyone turned.

Ethan Kwon stepped out.

Adrian's cousin looked exhausted.

He stopped when he saw Elena.

For once, Ethan had no joke.

"You're alive."

Elena watched him.

"You sound disappointed."

"I sound shocked."

"Your lighter was here."

"What?"

Adrian pointed toward the desk.

Ethan saw the silver lighter.

He reached instinctively into his coat.

His pocket was empty.

"Someone took it."

Marcus laughed harshly.

"Of course."

Ethan looked at him.

"You want to talk? Your vehicles were outside Arthur's house."

"I sent them to protect Adrian."

"They did a fantastic job."

"Enough," Adrian said.

Silence fell.

He looked at every person in the room.

Arthur.

Marcus.

Rebecca.

Ethan.

Elena.

Everyone who mattered.

Everyone potentially guilty.

"Page 47," Adrian said, "was designed to expose a leak."

Arthur nodded.

"Originally."

"There were three versions."

"Yes."

"Now there are at least four."

Rebecca placed hers on the desk.

Arthur produced his copy.

Marcus stared.

"You sent me one too."

Arthur turned.

"What?"

Marcus removed a folded document from his coat.

"My version named Rebecca."

Elena's eyes widened.

Five.

Adrian placed them side by side.

Each page contained nearly identical records.

Different names.

Tiny differences in routing numbers.

Different transaction references.

Elena leaned over them.

"These aren't random."

Everyone watched her.

"The differences form a sequence."

She took a pencil.

Last digit.

First digit.

Routing codes.

Transfer dates.

Five versions.

Five fragments.

Together, they created something.

A bank account number.

Rebecca immediately recognized the format.

"Swiss."

Elena nodded.

Arthur went pale.

"No."

Adrian looked at him.

"You know it?"

Arthur sat.

"I know who did."

Nobody moved.

Arthur reached into his coat.

Slowly.

Marcus raised his gun.

Arthur ignored him and withdrew an old photograph.

He placed it beside Page 47.

A younger Arthur stood outside a country house.

Beside him was Adrian's mother.

Grace Kwon.

And another man.

Adrian's father, Victor Kwon.

Between them stood a fourth person.

Charles Vane.

The broker connected to Elena's disappearance.

Adrian stared.

"How long did Vane know my parents?"

"Before you were born."

Arthur's voice sounded tired.

"Your father and Charles were partners."

"In what?"

"Everything."

Arthur looked toward the city.

"Your father created a financial network to survive raids, indictments, wars. Grace discovered it."

"Northstar."

"Yes."

"She tried to take it."

"She tried to redirect the clean money into a trust for you."

Adrian's voice became dangerous.

"And died."

Arthur met his gaze.

"I've spent seventeen years wondering whether that accident was an accident."

The room went quiet.

Elena spoke.

"Charles Vane."

Arthur nodded.

"I suspected him."

"Why didn't you tell Adrian?"

"Because suspicion gets people killed."

Adrian laughed bitterly.

"Silence did a better job?"

Arthur accepted the blow.

"No."

Elena studied the five pages.

"Vane couldn't have done this alone."

"No," Arthur said.

"He needed someone inside."

Marcus.

Rebecca.

Ethan.

Everyone exchanged looks.

Adrian had never felt his penthouse seem so small.

Elena entered the combined account number into Rebecca's laptop through an encrypted banking archive.

One result appeared.

Northstar Seven Custodial Trust.

Beneficiary records restricted.

Rebecca typed.

Nothing.

Elena used a secondary ledger reference.

The screen changed.

A list of transactions filled it.

Hundreds.

Then names.

Adrian leaned closer.

"No."

His own businesses.

Arthur's.

Marcus's brother.

Rebecca's legal accounts.

Ethan's partnerships.

Every route converged.

But there was one more column.

AUTHORIZED BENEFICIARY.

Elena scrolled.

The name wasn't Adrian.

It wasn't Arthur.

Or Marcus.

Or Rebecca.

Or Ethan.

It was ELENA MARIA VASQUEZ.

She stepped backward.

"No."

Adrian looked at her.

"You're the beneficiary?"

"I've never seen this."

Rebecca checked the records.

"Established two years and three days ago."

Three days before Elena vanished.

Elena's face drained.

"Someone put ninety million dollars in my name."

Ethan whispered, "Why?"

Arthur understood.

His expression became horrified.

"Insurance."

Everyone turned.

He explained.

"If the network collapsed, investigators would trace the money to Elena."

"Frame her," Rebecca said.

Arthur nodded.

"She'd look like the architect."

Elena stared at the screen.

Adrian saw what captivity had failed to do.

Break her.

This almost did.

For two years she had believed she'd been kidnapped because she discovered the conspiracy.

Now the truth was uglier.

The conspiracy had been built around her before she ever found it.

"You weren't bait," Adrian said.

Elena looked at him.

"You were the fall guy."

"Fall woman."

"You know what I mean."

She didn't smile.

Marcus moved toward the windows.

"Why keep her alive?"

Arthur answered.

"Because dead people attract investigators."

Elena's voice became hollow.

"Missing people become stories."

"Eventually stories fade."

Arthur nodded.

"And if the authorities ever found Northstar?"

"They release me."

Rebecca finished the thought.

"Alive, carrying records, looking guilty."

Elena closed her eyes.

The nightmare finally had a shape.

Then Adrian noticed Arthur's hand.

Trembling.

Not from pain.

Fear.

"What aren't you telling me?"

Arthur looked up.

Adrian stepped closer.

"Arthur."

"I promised Grace."

"Promised what?"

Arthur looked at Elena.

Then Adrian.

"To keep you from learning what really happened the night she died."

Adrian's face hardened.

"You're done protecting me."

Arthur breathed slowly.

"Your mother wasn't alone in the car."

Adrian said nothing.

"The police report said she was."

"It was altered."

"By whom?"

Arthur's eyes filled with seventeen years of guilt.

"Me."

The room seemed to tilt.

Adrian took one step backward.

Arthur continued.

"There was someone else in that car."

"Who?"

"A sixteen-year-old boy."

Adrian's throat tightened.

He knew before Arthur spoke.

"Ethan."

Across the penthouse, Ethan went completely still.

Arthur looked at him.

May you like

"Ethan survived the crash that killed your mother."

And Adrian understood why his cousin had spent seventeen years refusing to talk about Grace Kwon.
