Chapter 13 - The House Beside the Barn

The new workshop opened the following spring.

People came from miles away.

Sahale taught leatherwork.

Asa taught carpentry.

Eli helped with horses.

A widow learned to repair harnesses.

A boy with an injured arm learned bookkeeping.

An older man losing his sight learned how to identify tools by touch and arrangement.

Nobody called it charity.

Sahale insisted on that.

It was work.

Training.

Dignity.

The small building became known as Rich House.

Sahale disliked the name at first.

Then she realized people were not naming it after Asa.

They were naming it after both of them.

Greyhawk visited occasionally.

His relationship with Sahale remained cautious.

But it existed.

One afternoon he watched her teaching a young girl with an injured foot.

“You became strong,” he said.

Sahale shook her head.

“I was always strong.”

Greyhawk absorbed the correction.

“Yes.”

That single word mattered.

Years of damage could not be repaired in a day.

But sometimes healing began with one accurate sentence.

Then a territorial official arrived with unexpected news.

Red Bluff wanted Sahale to serve as an interpreter and mediator in trade disputes.

Sahale stared at him.

“Me?”

“You understand both sides.”

She laughed bitterly.

“Both sides have insulted me.”

“Perhaps that is why both sides listen when you insult them back.”

Asa coughed to hide a laugh.

Sahale accepted.

The woman once dismissed as useless was now being asked to prevent the very conflicts powerful men had once exploited.

But leadership brought enemies.

And one of Caleb Voss’s former partners had just been released.

His first destination was Red Bluff.
