Chapter 3 - The Bullet Meant for His Sister

Emergency lights flickered red along the hallway.

Rafe moved instantly.

He pushed Tessa and June behind a heavy cabinet near the staff lounge wall and positioned himself between them and the door.

Tessa grabbed his arm.

“You’re injured.”

“Stay behind me.”

“That wasn’t a suggestion.”

“Neither was mine.”

Another impact hit the door.

June flinched.

Rafe’s eyes stayed fixed forward.

“Malcolm!”

“Working on it!”

Voices echoed outside.

Then came the sound of running feet.

A security alarm.

A crash.

And silence.

Tessa hated that silence more than the noise.

Rafe remained perfectly still.

His body blocked almost her entire view.

She could feel the tension in him.

Not fear for himself.

Fear for June.

That difference mattered.

After what felt like several minutes, Malcolm knocked in a specific pattern.

Rafe didn’t move.

“Code.”

“Northstar.”

Rafe opened the door.

Malcolm entered.

His tie was gone.

His expression was furious.

“What happened?” Rafe asked.

“Power was deliberately cut to this wing.”

“Who?”

“We caught one man in the stairwell.”

“Name?”

“He isn’t talking.”

Rafe’s face changed.

Tessa recognized the look.

“Rafe.”

He ignored her.

“Where is he?”

“Downstairs with hospital security.”

“Take me.”

Tessa stepped in front of him.

“No.”

Rafe looked down.

“Move.”

“No.”

“Tessa.”

“You were shot a few hours ago.”

“This is not your concern.”

“You became my concern when you bled on my shoes.”

June made a weak laugh.

Rafe did not.

“This man tried to get to my sister.”

“And you tearing open your wound won’t help her.”

Rafe leaned closer.

“You don’t understand the stakes.”

“Then explain them.”

His nostrils flared.

For a second, Tessa thought she had finally pushed too far.

Then June spoke.

“She’s right.”

Rafe looked at his sister.

June folded her arms.

“You want me safe? Start by not collapsing.”

Rafe stared at both women.

Malcolm made the mistake of smiling.

Rafe turned.

“Something funny?”

“No, boss.”

“Good.”

Tessa pointed toward the chair.

“Sit.”

Malcolm looked away to hide another smile.

Rafe sat.

Tessa checked his dressing.

There was fresh blood but not enough to require immediate intervention.

“Five minutes,” she said.

“That’s all?”

“You’re negotiating with the person who controls whether you’re medically cleared to leave.”

“You enjoy this.”

“More than I should.”

June lowered herself into another chair.

Then her expression became serious.

“You asked what Dad lied about.”

Rafe looked at her.

“Yes.”

June took a breath.

“When I was sixteen, I overheard him arguing with Evelyn.”

Tessa’s pulse quickened.

“My mother?”

June nodded.

“She had discovered money disappearing from one of the Calder charitable trusts.”

Rafe frowned.

“Which trust?”

“The Calder Children’s Fund.”

His expression hardened.

“That was Mother’s.”

“Yes.”

Rafe stood despite Tessa’s glare.

“Dad said Evelyn stole it.”

“He lied.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I heard Evelyn accuse someone else.”

“Who?”

June hesitated.

“Silas Vane.”

Malcolm swore under his breath.

Tessa looked between them.

“Who is that?”

Rafe’s expression had become very still.

“My father’s oldest business partner.”

“Still alive?”

“Very.”

June continued.

“Dad told Evelyn she was mistaken. She told him she had records proving it.”

Rafe looked toward the window.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I was sixteen.”

“You could have told me later.”

“Dad made me promise.”

Rafe laughed without humor.

“And that mattered after everything he did?”

“To me, yes.”

His face tightened.

June stood.

“I was a child too, Rafe.”

That silenced him.

Tessa watched the siblings.

The city saw Calder power.

It didn’t see this.

A brother who had become a guardian too young.

A sister still carrying promises made under pressure.

June stepped closer.

“I’m sorry.”

Rafe looked at her.

Then nodded once.

It was not complete forgiveness.

But it was enough for now.

Tessa turned back to the photograph.

“Why would someone carry this tonight?”

Malcolm answered.

“To send a message.”

“To whom?”

“Could be Rafe.”

Tessa shook her head.

“No. The photograph was placed where security would find it.”

Malcolm studied her.

“You think it was meant for you?”

“I think whoever left it knew I would be here.”

Rafe’s eyes sharpened.

“How would they know that?”

“My emergency team was assigned to the gala three weeks ago.”

Malcolm pulled out his phone.

“I’ll check who had access.”

Tessa looked at June.

“Did my mother ever tell you what happened to the records?”

“No.”

“Did she mention me?”

June’s face softened.

“Yes.”

Tessa stopped breathing.

“What did she say?”

“That she had a daughter.”

“That’s all?”

June’s eyes became sad.

“She said everything she was doing was to make sure you grew up outside this world.”

Tessa looked away.

Her mother had never told her about danger.

She had never explained why they moved apartments so often.

Why she checked locks twice.

Why she avoided photographs.

Why she made Tessa promise never to use her father’s surname.

Rafe noticed.

“What?”

Tessa hesitated.

“My last name wasn’t always Ward.”

Rafe stared at her.

“What was it?”

“My mother changed it when I was six.”

“To what?”

“Ward.”

“What was it before?”

Tessa’s mouth went dry.

“Vale.”

Malcolm looked up sharply.

June went pale.

Rafe’s expression became unreadable.

Tessa noticed.

“What?”

Rafe stepped closer.

“Your father’s name.”

“I never knew him.”

“What did your mother tell you?”

“That he died.”

“Name.”

Tessa didn’t understand why everyone had suddenly become tense.

“Adrian Vale.”

June sat down.

Malcolm muttered, “Jesus.”

Tessa turned toward Rafe.

“Who was he?”

Rafe looked as if he were choosing every word carefully.

“Adrian Vale was my father’s chief accountant.”

Tessa froze.

“He disappeared fifteen years ago.”

The timeline matched.

Exactly.

Rafe continued.

“My father believed he stole seven million dollars.”

Tessa shook her head.

“No.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I know my mother.”

“I’m not accusing her.”

“You’re accusing my father.”

“I’m telling you what happened.”

June interrupted.

“Rafe.”

He looked at her.

“What?”

“What if Dad blamed Adrian for what Silas did?”

The room went quiet.

Tessa’s heart pounded.

Malcolm spoke slowly.

“That would explain why Evelyn disappeared.”

Rafe’s eyes shifted back to the photograph.

“And why someone wants June quiet.”

Tessa sat.

Everything she knew about her childhood was changing in minutes.

Her father had not simply died.

He had been connected to the Calder family.

Accused of theft.

Then vanished.

Rafe crouched in front of her.

The movement surprised her.

A man his size lowering himself so she didn’t have to look up.

“Tessa.”

She stared at him.

“I need you to tell me everything your mother ever said about him.”

“She said he was kind.”

“What else?”

“That he loved music.”

Rafe waited.

“She said...” Tessa swallowed. “She said powerful men punished him for telling the truth.”

Rafe’s jaw tightened.

“Anything else?”

Tessa closed her eyes.

One memory returned.

Her mother sitting beside her bed.

Crying.

Whispering a sentence Tessa had not understood.

“If Calder ever learns the truth, everything changes.”

Tessa opened her eyes.

“There was something.”

Rafe leaned closer.

“What?”

“She said if Calder learned the truth, everything would change.”

Rafe stared at her.

“Which Calder?”

“I don’t know.”

Malcolm’s phone buzzed.

He read the screen.

Then his expression turned grim.

“Boss.”

“What?”

“We identified the man from the stairwell.”

Rafe stood.

“Who is he?”

Malcolm looked at Tessa.

“His name is Daniel Pike.”

Tessa’s stomach dropped.

She knew that name.

Not from childhood.

From St. Catherine’s.

“He works here.”

Malcolm nodded.

“He accessed Tessa’s personnel file three times this month.”

Rafe’s face went cold.

“Why?”

Malcolm scrolled farther.

Then stopped.

“What?”

“There’s more.”

He turned the phone toward Rafe.

“Tessa’s file was flagged nine years ago.”

“By who?”

“A private legal office.”

“Name.”

Malcolm looked up.

“Vane Holdings.”

Tessa stood.

“What did they want?”

Malcolm’s expression shifted.

“They weren’t looking at your employment history.”

He looked directly at her.

“They were monitoring your blood type.”

Tessa stared.

Rafe frowned.

“Why would Silas Vane care about her blood type?”

June suddenly covered her mouth.

Rafe turned.

“June?”

Her eyes filled with horror.

“Oh God.”

“What?”

She looked at Tessa.

Then at Rafe.

“There was another reason Dad protected Evelyn.”

Rafe stepped toward her.

“What reason?”

June whispered the words.

“Because Adrian Vale wasn’t Tessa’s biological father.”

Tessa felt the room disappear beneath her.

Rafe’s expression went blank.

June was crying now.

May you like

“Our father was.”
