Chapter 9 - MY MOTHER-IN-LAW’S SECRET DAUGHTER

My father told me not to trust my brother.

The sentence followed me everywhere.

Adrian drove.

I watched him.

He spoke to Pierce.

I watched him.

He slept in the chair outside my room because I still woke screaming after the warehouse.

I watched him.

Every act of love became suspicious.

I hated myself for it.

But betrayal changes the mathematics of trust.

One lie plus one lie no longer equals two.

It equals every possibility.

I read Dad’s letter alone.

The next line explained more.

Adrian loves you.

That is exactly why you cannot tell him everything.

Years ago, he made a decision to protect you.

Victor Hale learned about it.

That decision became leverage.

If Adrian believes revealing the truth will put you in danger, he will lie again.

Not because he is evil.

Because he is your brother.

Find Elena Ward.

She knows what Victor did.

Elena Ward.

The name appeared nowhere in my files.

Pierce ran it.

Dozens of women.

Then Antonio saw the name.

And turned pale.

“No.”

“Who is she?”

“You don’t need her.”

“That means I definitely do.”

Antonio refused to answer.

So Natalie did.

“Elena Ward used to be Elena Hale.”

Adrian stared.

“Evelyn’s sister?”

“No.”

Natalie swallowed.

“Evelyn’s daughter.”

We all went silent.

Evelyn publicly had three sons.

Caleb.

Mark.

Jonathan, who died at nineteen.

No daughter.

“Elena was born when Evelyn was seventeen,” Natalie said.

“Victor had the records sealed after they married.”

“Why?”

“Because Elena’s father wasn’t Victor.”

“Who was?”

Natalie looked at Antonio.

He turned away.

Adrian’s voice lowered.

“No.”

Antonio said nothing.

“You?”

“Yes.”

My stomach twisted.

Antonio Russo and Evelyn Hale had a daughter.

Which meant Elena was my cousin.

And Caleb’s half-sister by upbringing, though not biology.

Family lines that had seemed clear became a knot.

“Where is she?”

“Boston.”

Elena lived under another name and worked as a pediatric surgeon.

When I saw her photograph, I understood why Evelyn had hidden her.

Elena looked exactly like her.

We contacted her.

She refused to speak by phone.

Then she sent one message.

COME ALONE.

Adrian immediately said no.

I went anyway.

Not completely alone.

Pierce followed from two blocks away without Elena knowing.

We met inside a church.

Elena sat in the last pew.

Elegant.

Fifty-something.

Gray at her temples.

She looked at my bruised face.

“So she finally did to you what she did to me.”

“Evelyn?”

“My mother.”

I sat.

“Why did my father tell me to find you?”

Elena gave me an envelope.

Inside was a photograph of Caleb as a baby.

A woman held him.

Not Evelyn.

The woman was younger.

Dark-haired.

Written beneath:

MARGARET CROSS AND CALEB. 1991.

“Who is Margaret?”

“Victor’s secretary.”

I looked at Elena.

“Caleb’s mother?”

“Yes.”

“But Natalie said Caleb wasn’t Evelyn’s biological son.”

“He wasn’t Victor’s either.”

That stopped me.

“What?”

Elena’s eyes were cold.

“Victor couldn’t have children.”

“But Mark?”

“Not biologically his.”

“Jonathan?”

“No.”

Every Hale child belonged to someone else.

Why?

“Victor collected people,” Elena said. “Children included.”

“That makes no sense.”

“He built a dynasty from useful bloodlines. People whose parents owed him. People he could control.”

“Who was Caleb’s father?”

Elena hesitated.

Then placed another photograph into my hand.

My father.

Thomas Russo.

Standing beside Margaret Cross.

My breath disappeared.

“No.”

“Elena.”

“No.”

“Caleb’s biological father was Thomas Russo.”

I stood so quickly the pew creaked.

“You’re lying.”

“I wish I were.”

“That would make Caleb—”

“Your half-brother.”

My stomach turned.

“No.”

Elena grabbed my wrist.

“Before you panic, listen to me.”

I pulled away.

“You just told me I married my brother!”

“I said Victor believed Thomas was Caleb’s father.”

“Believed?”

“Yes.”

“Was he?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then why tell me?”

“Because Evelyn has spent thirty years using that possibility as leverage.”

I could barely hear.

“Did Caleb know?”

Elena nodded.

“Before your wedding?”

My body went numb.

“Yes.”

I ran outside and threw up behind the church.

Pierce found me.

“What happened?”

I could not speak.

Then my phone rang.

Caleb.

For the first time since the warehouse, I answered.

“You knew.”

Silence.

Then his voice.

“So she told you.”

“You knew.”

“Bella—”

“Did you marry me knowing we might share a father?”

His answer came quietly.

“Yes.”

Something inside me shattered.

Then Caleb whispered:

“But Thomas Russo wasn’t my father.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I found the DNA results.”

I gripped the phone.

“Where?”

“In the one place your brother will never let you search.”

“Where?”

May you like

Caleb laughed softly.

“Adrian’s safe.”
