Chapter 11 - The Ledger Beneath the Chapel

The stolen scans did not stop the surgery.

The imaging center still had encrypted copies.

But the break-in proved Vittorio had not run.

He was still fighting.

Adrian traced the mansion breach to an employee who had worked for Vittorio for twelve years.

The man had vanished before security reached him.

Sebastian’s patience ended.

“Search everything.”

“We have.”

“No. Search my father’s chapel again.”

Clare remembered the hidden archive.

The first search had focused on the cabinet.

This time Adrian removed panels from the walls.

Behind the altar they found a narrow metal box.

Inside was a ledger.

Not financial records in the normal sense.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

Favors.

Threats.

Doctors.

Police officers.

Lawyers.

Judges.

And Lombardis.

Clare turned pages slowly.

Then stopped.

Twenty-seven names were listed beneath Sebastian’s initials.

The twenty-seven specialists.

But the truth was stranger than they expected.

Most had not been bribed.

They had been given altered imaging.

False surgical reports.

Manufactured neurological tests.

Only three doctors had known the truth.

Bell.

Vale.

And a third physician.

Dr. Helena Lombardi.

Sebastian stared at the name.

“My aunt.”

Sofia whispered, “Dad’s sister.”

Helena had died seven years earlier.

She had been the first physician to examine Sebastian after the accident.

Clare searched the ledger.

Beside Helena’s name was a handwritten note.

REFUSED PAYMENT.

THREATENED DISCLOSURE.

CONTROLLED THROUGH FAMILY.

Sebastian closed the ledger.

“So not everyone betrayed me.”

“No,” Clare said. “Some were lied to.”

Sofia pointed to another entry.

“Look.”

Antonio Lombardi’s name.

Beside it:

REGRETS AGREEMENT.

REQUESTED REVERSAL.

VITTORIO REFUSED.

Sebastian remained silent.

His father had failed him.

But he had tried to undo it.

Too late.

Badly.

Secretly.

Still, the truth was more complicated than simple betrayal.

Clare turned another page.

There was a final note from Antonio:

IF SEBASTIAN EVER LEARNS THE TRUTH, GIVE HIM THE CHOICE I STOLE FROM HIM.

Clare looked at Sebastian.

He stared at the sentence for a long time.

Then said, “I choose surgery.”

The procedure took place the next morning under heavy security.

Clare waited with Sofia and Owen.

Hours passed.

When Dr. Franklin finally emerged, her face was exhausted.

“The device is out.”

Clare stood.

“Nerve response?”

“Present.”

Sofia began crying.

“What does that mean?”

“It means we wait.”

Sebastian woke late that evening.

Clare sat beside his bed.

His first words were predictable.

“Can I walk?”

“No.”

He frowned.

“You just had spinal surgery.”

“Can I move?”

“We’ll test tomorrow.”

“I want to test now.”

“No.”

“You work for me.”

“Not tonight.”

He looked at her.

“Bossy.”

“Paralyzed crime bosses are surprisingly difficult patients.”

His eyes closed again.

Before sleeping, he whispered, “Stay.”

Clare did.

At 3:12 a.m., Sebastian woke suddenly.

Clare leaned forward.

“What?”

His eyes were wide.

“My foot.”

“What about it?”

“I can feel the blanket.”

Clare’s heart stopped.

“Are you sure?”

He nodded.

She touched the top of his foot.

“Here?”

“Yes.”

A little farther.

“Here?”

“Yes.”

His voice broke on the second answer.

For twenty years, Sebastian Lombardi had felt almost nothing below the injury.

Now he could feel Clare’s fingertips.

He looked at her.

Neither spoke.

Then the door opened.

Adrian entered carrying a phone.

“We found Vittorio.”

Sebastian’s expression changed instantly.

“Where?”

Adrian placed a photograph on the bed.

“At the airport.”

“Going where?”

“Switzerland.”

Clare looked at the timestamp.

Vittorio had been detained twenty minutes earlier.

But something about the photograph bothered her.

He was smiling.

Not frightened.

Not defeated.

Smiling.

Then Sebastian’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Vittorio’s voice filled the room.

“You found the ledger.”

Sebastian’s face hardened.

“You should be in custody.”

“I am.”

“Then why are you smiling?”

Vittorio laughed softly.

“Because you still think I was the one giving the orders.”

The line went dead.

May you like

And suddenly the family secret became larger than Vittorio.
