Chapter 5 - The Meeting That Changed Everything

The discovery tore through Brightwell quietly.

There were no dramatic confrontations in hallways.

No shouting.

No public humiliation.

Just locked accounts.

Closed conference-room doors.

Outside attorneys.

And empty offices.

Hannah's director was suspended pending investigation.

The altered reports were preserved.

The acquisition remained frozen.

For the first time, Hannah understood why Evan had always been careful about discussing business.

Money didn't simply buy beautiful things.

Sometimes it made every room more complicated.

Three days later, Brightwell's board requested Hannah attend a meeting with Cole Meridian.

She almost refused.

Then she saw Evan's name on the attendee list.

“You'll be there?” she asked that night.

“Yes.”

“As my fiancé?”

“No.”

That answer surprised her.

“As what?”

“As a representative of Cole Meridian.”

Hannah nodded.

“Then I'll be there as Hannah Reed, senior project analyst.”

Evan smiled.

“Exactly.”

The meeting lasted three hours.

Hannah explained everything she had found.

She didn't exaggerate.

Didn't accuse anyone without evidence.

Didn't mention Sloane's treatment of her.

She simply explained the numbers.

By the end, nobody was looking at Evan.

They were looking at Hannah.

One board member finally asked:

“If Cole Meridian proceeds with the investment, what would you change here?”

Hannah wasn't prepared for the question.

She thought about Sloane.

About her director.

About interns afraid to speak.

About a culture that rewarded appearances.

“Accountability,” she said.

The room became quiet.

“People shouldn't be afraid to tell the truth because the person above them has a better title.”

She paused.

“And we should stop confusing confidence with competence.”

Across the table, Evan lowered his eyes to hide a smile.

Afterward, Hannah found him by the elevators.

“You smiled.”

“I did not.”

“You absolutely did.”

“You were good.”

“I know.”

He laughed.

That answer made him happier than anything else she could have said.

The elevator arrived.

Before the doors closed, Cole Meridian's chairman approached.

Evan's father.

Hannah had met him only twice.

He held out an envelope.

“What is this?”

“A proposal.”

Hannah looked at Evan.

He looked equally confused.

She opened it.

Then stared.

Brightwell wanted to create a new independent oversight division.

And they wanted Hannah to lead it.

Vice President.

A salary nearly double what she currently earned.

Direct access to the board.

Hannah read the final page.

Then she saw a handwritten condition.

She looked up.

“Who added this?”

Evan's father smiled.

“You did.”

“I've never seen this.”

“No. But it's based on something you said today.”

The new division would protect employees who reported internal concerns.

Hannah felt unexpectedly emotional.

Then her phone rang.

The repair shop.

She answered.

“Hannah Reed?”

“Yes?”

“There is someone here asking about your car.”

Her smile vanished.

“Who?”

May you like

The mechanic hesitated.

“A woman named Sloane Mercer.”
