Chapter 4 - The Night She Lost Everything

Mara called Dante.
He answered on the first ring.
“Where are you?”
“Inside.”
“Move away from the windows.”
Silence.
“Mara?”
“Do it.”
Something in her voice made him obey.
Thirty seconds later, his security team found the building across the street empty.
No shooter.
No rifle.
Only a laser mounted on a tripod and a camera pointed toward Dante's windows.
A warning.
Dante reached Mara twenty minutes later.
She expected anger.
Instead, he crossed the room and pulled her against him.
Mara resisted for perhaps two seconds.
Then she broke.
She buried her face against his chest and cried.
Not because she had forgiven him.
Not because anything was fixed.
Because somebody had aimed at her husband.
Love did not wait for arguments to finish.
“I hate you,” she whispered.
“I know.”
“I don't actually hate you.”
“I know that too.”
She pulled away.
“You should have told me.”
“Yes.”
“No excuse?”
“I have dozens. None make what I did right.”
That answer hurt differently.
She showed him her father's envelope.
When Dante saw Richard's photograph, his expression hardened.
“He hired you deliberately.”
Mara felt sick.
“My entire career?”
“Maybe not.”
“He knew who I was.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
They found out the next morning.
Richard called an emergency board meeting.
Mara arrived with Dante.
Richard refused to let him inside.
“This is an internal corporate matter.”
Dante looked at Mara.
Her choice.
“Wait outside,” she said.
He nodded.
That tiny act mattered.
Inside, Preston sat with three board members.
Vanessa was absent.
Evelyn sat at the far end.
Richard began without ceremony.
“Mara Ellis has been suspended pending an investigation into unauthorized modifications of the Aurelia construction documents.”
Mara stared at him.
“You know I didn't make those changes.”
Richard folded his hands.
“The digital record says otherwise.”
“You hired me because of my father.”
His face changed.
Preston looked confused.
Good.
Richard hadn't told him everything.
Mara placed the old photograph on the table.
Richard stared at it.
“You knew Thomas Ellis.”
No answer.
“You knew him before you hired me.”
“Mara—”
“Say it.”
“Yes.”
The room shifted.
“Why?”
Richard looked toward Preston.
Then the board.
Finally, he spoke.
“Your father saved my life.”
Mara had expected betrayal.
Not that.
“What?”
“Thomas discovered what the Bellinis were doing through Delaney. I helped him copy records.”
“Then why did he write not to trust you?”
Richard closed his eyes.
“Because I betrayed him.”
The words landed hard.
“They threatened my family. I told Salvatore where Thomas kept the copies.”
Mara couldn't speak.
“Your father moved them before Salvatore arrived.”
“And then?”
“He died three weeks later.”
“Heart attack.”
“Yes.”
“You believe that?”
Richard looked at her.
“I don't know.”
Mara's hands trembled.
“So you hired me because you felt guilty.”
“At first.”
That was somehow worse.
“At first?”
“You were twenty-six and angry at the world and your portfolio was extraordinary.”
A sad smile.
“Within six months, I forgot I was supposed to be helping Thomas's daughter. You were simply the best young architect in the office.”
Mara hated that she wanted to believe him.
Preston interrupted.
“This is touching, but irrelevant.”
Mara turned.
He slid documents across the table.
Termination papers.
“You falsified project approvals.”
Evelyn stood.
“She didn't.”
Everyone looked at her.
“I did.”
Preston's face changed.
Evelyn continued.
“Under instruction from Preston Hale.”
Richard stared.
Preston laughed.
“She's lying.”
“I recorded you.”
Silence.
Evelyn placed a drive on the table.
Preston stood.
“You stupid—”
The door opened.
Dante entered.
He didn't need to say anything.
Preston sat down.
But Richard did something nobody expected.
He picked up the flash drive.
And snapped it in half.
Mara stared at him.
“What did you do?”
Richard's eyes filled with regret.
“I'm sorry.”
Then she understood.
He wasn't saving Preston.
He was saving himself.
Richard had known about Aurelia.
Maybe from the beginning.
Security entered.
Not Dante's men.
Corporate security.
Richard looked at Mara.
“Your suspension is effective immediately.”
Mara's throat tightened.
“You're choosing them again.”
Richard couldn't meet her eyes.
Dante stepped beside her.
Mara shook her head before he could speak.
“No.”
He stopped.
She collected her bag.
Walked out.
No threats.
No dramatic scene.
That made it worse.
By noon, the story had leaked.
ARCHITECT SUSPENDED OVER AURELIA SAFETY IRREGULARITIES.
By three, blogs had her photograph.
By five, social media had decided she was incompetent.
Comments appeared beneath articles.
Some attacked her work.
Some attacked her appearance.
Some claimed she had slept her way into the firm.
Then somebody published her marriage.
MAFIA HEIR'S SECRET WIFE AT CENTER OF $280 MILLION CONSTRUCTION SCANDAL.
Everything she had spent nine years preventing happened in a single afternoon.
Her work disappeared.
She became Dante Bellini's wife.
That evening Mara sat on their bedroom floor.
Dante found her reading comments.
He took the phone away.
“Stop.”
“They think you bought my career.”
“I know.”
“They think I'm a fraud.”
“I know.”
“I have awards.”
“I know.”
“Buildings.”
“I know.”
“Clients.”
“I know.”
She looked at him.
“Why does none of that matter now?”
Dante sat beside her.
“Because scandal is easier to consume than truth.”
Mara leaned her head against the wall.
“What if I never get it back?”
“You will.”
“You can't know that.”
“No.”
His hand found hers.
“But I know you.”
For several minutes they sat without speaking.
Then Dante's phone rang.
He listened.
His expression changed.
“What?”
He hung up.
“Vanessa Cross disappeared.”
Mara frowned.
“What do you mean disappeared?”
“She emptied her apartment.”
“Preston?”
“He says he doesn't know where she is.”
“Do you believe him?”
“No.”
Dante stood.
“There's more.”
He handed Mara his phone.
Security footage from the Aurelia construction site.
Timestamp: 2:14 a.m.
Vanessa entered through a temporary gate.
Twenty minutes later, she emerged carrying a metal case.
Mara enlarged the frame.
Around Vanessa's neck hung the B17 keycard.
“She found something.”
“Yes.”
“From the vault?”
“Possibly.”
Another video loaded.
This one was from Union Station.
Vanessa walked through the concourse.
She stopped.
Turned.
Looked directly toward a security camera.
Then lifted a piece of paper.
Three words had been written on it.
MARA. FIND ME.
Beneath it was an address.
Dante read it.
His face went cold.
“You're not going.”
Mara stood.
“Yes, I am.”
“No.”
“She asked for me.”
“Which is precisely why you're not going.”
Mara walked to the closet and grabbed her coat.
Dante blocked the doorway.
“Move.”
“No.”
“Dante.”
“No.”
She stared at him.
“This is the part where you decide whether I'm your wife or your prisoner.”
His jaw tightened.
Ten seconds passed.
Then Dante stepped aside.
“I'm coming.”
“Fine.”
The address led to an abandoned church on the South Side.
Dante's security remained outside at Mara's insistence.
Inside, candles burned near the altar.
Vanessa sat alone in the first pew.
No champagne dress.
No diamonds.
Jeans.
Sweatshirt.
Her blonde hair tied back.
She looked terrified.
When Mara approached, Vanessa stood.
“I owe you an apology.”
Mara almost laughed.
“You think?”
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“Preston is going to kill me.”
Dante scanned the shadows.
“Why?”
Vanessa lifted the metal case.
“Because I found what he's been looking for.”
She opened it.
Inside were dozens of old tapes.
Documents.
Photographs.
One folder had Mara's father's name on it.
Thomas Ellis.
Mara reached for it.
Vanessa stopped her.
“You need to know something first.”
“What?”
“Your father wasn't killed because he discovered the Bellinis' secret.”
Mara froze.
Vanessa looked toward Dante.
“He was killed because he discovered Preston Hale's father was secretly working with Salvatore.”
Dante's face darkened.
Vanessa swallowed.
“And Richard Whitmore didn't betray your father.”
Mara stared.
“He told you he did.”
“He lied.”
“Why?”
“Because the man who actually betrayed Thomas Ellis is still alive.”
“Who?”
Vanessa opened another folder.
She removed a photograph.
Mara looked at the face.
Her knees nearly gave way.
The man in the photograph had attended her wedding.
Had hugged her.
Had called her every birthday.
Her father's younger brother.
Uncle Raymond.
Vanessa whispered:
May you like
“He's been working for Salvatore Bellini for thirty years.”
