Chapter 11 - The Call I Never Expected

Nine months after my deployment ended, my phone rang.
Audrey.
I almost ignored it.
Then answered.
“Lucas?”
“What happened?”
“Mom wants to see you.”
“No.”
“She’s sick.”
I closed my eyes.
“I’m sorry to hear that.”
“That’s it?”
“What do you want me to say?”
Audrey was quiet.
“She keeps asking about Leo.”
“She isn’t seeing Leo.”
“I know.”
There was something new in Audrey’s voice.
Acceptance.
Not manipulation.
“I told her that.”
I sat down.
“You did?”
“Yes.”
“She got angry.”
“I imagine.”
“I left.”
That surprised me.
Audrey had begun counseling as part of rebuilding her life after the case.
I knew because Robert told me, not because I asked.
“I’m trying, Lucas.”
“I hope you are.”
“I don’t expect you to trust me.”
“Good.”
A tiny laugh.
“I deserved that.”
“No. I’m serious. Don’t rebuild yourself to make me trust you. Do it because you don’t want to become Mom.”
Silence.
Then:
“I don’t.”
For the first time, I believed her.
Not enough for reconciliation.
But enough for possibility.
After we hung up, Sophia asked who called.
“Audrey.”
She waited.
“She left Mom.”
Sophia nodded.
“How do you feel?”
“I don’t know.”
“That’s allowed.”
I smiled.
“You’ve been talking to Naomi too much.”
“She charges less when I steal her advice.”
Months later, Audrey sent Leo a birthday card.
No gift.
No request to visit.
Just a card.
Happy first birthday, Leo. I hope someday I become the kind of aunt you deserve.
Sophia read it.
Then handed it to me.
“What do we do?”
I looked at our son smashing cake into his hair.
“We keep it.”
“Why?”
“So someday, if she becomes that person, we remember where she started.”
It wasn’t forgiveness.
It was leaving a door unlocked without opening it.
But then another call came.
This one from Eleanor’s attorney.
My mother wanted to return something.
Something she had taken from Sophia.
And when Naomi brought the sealed package to our house, Sophia opened it and gasped.

Inside was her wedding ring.
The ring she believed she had lost the night everything began.
