Chapter 11 - Garrett’s Perfect Marriage Began to Collapse

The missing trust documents caused panic.

Rebecca remained calmer than everyone else.

“They stole originals,” she said. “Not reality.”

Copies existed.

Digital backups existed.

Filed versions existed.

The theft could not erase Maya’s trust.

But it proved someone was desperate.

Building security footage showed a hooded figure entering through a service corridor.

Police eventually identified the person.

Colin Voss.

He was arrested two days later.

What happened after that shattered Garrett’s remaining protection.

Voss talked.

Not immediately.

But enough.

He admitted monitoring me.

He admitted delivering the photograph.

He admitted entering the hidden office.

And he claimed Garrett had directed him.

Garrett denied everything.

Then Voss produced messages.

Garrett’s attorney withdrew from representing him on certain matters.

That was when Garrett called me from another number.

I answered before realizing who it was.

“Audrey.”

I nearly hung up.

“Wait.”

“No.”

“Please.”

The word sounded unnatural in his mouth.

“You’re destroying my life.”

I almost admired the consistency.

Even now, he was the victim.

“No, Garrett.”

“My company is collapsing.”

“Not because of me.”

“My sister betrayed me.”

“Not because of me.”

“My father set me up.”

“Not because of me.”

Silence.

Then:

“I love you.”

Three years earlier, those words could make me forgive almost anything.

Now they sounded empty.

“You loved having me.”

“That’s not fair.”

“No. It’s accurate.”

He started crying.

I had never heard Garrett cry.

For one dangerous second, old instincts returned.

Comfort him.

Fix it.

Make peace.

Then Maya made a tiny sound in her bassinet.

I looked at her.

The instinct vanished.

“You need help, Garrett.”

“I need my family.”

“You need accountability.”

He became angry instantly.

There he was.

“You think you’re better than me?”

“No.”

“Then stop acting like it.”

“I’m not.”

“You’d have nothing without my family.”

I smiled sadly.

“That’s what you needed me to believe.”

I hung up.

My hands shook afterward.

Healing was not becoming fearless.

It was doing the right thing while fear still lived in your body.

The financial investigation continued.

Garrett was removed from day-to-day control of Whitmore Development pending review.

The board appointed an interim executive.

Samantha resigned from the foundation.

Evelyn moved out of the mansion voluntarily.

And for the first time in decades, the enormous house stood mostly empty.

Rebecca asked what I wanted done with it.

“It belongs to Maya’s trust eventually,” she said. “You have occupancy rights as her guardian.”

I pictured the marble foyer.

The staircase.

The dining room where Garrett corrected how I held a wineglass.

The nursery Samantha redesigned without asking me.

“No.”

“You don’t want to live there?”

“Never.”

Rebecca smiled.

“What should we do with it?”

I did not know yet.

But the answer came several weeks later when I visited a local nonprofit helping women and children leaving coercive homes.

Their shelter was full.

Their waiting list was long.

Their director apologized while explaining they desperately needed transitional housing.

I thought of the mansion.

Twenty-two bedrooms.

Guest wings.

Security gates.

Garages.

Acres of land.

A place built to display one family’s wealth.

I called Rebecca.

“I know what I want.”

Three months later, attorneys began exploring whether part of the property could legally be leased to the nonprofit at a nominal rate while protecting Maya’s trust interests.

When Garrett learned, he exploded.

“That is my childhood home!”

No.

It was a building.

And buildings could become something better than the memories they contained.

But before that transformation could happen, one last threat remained.

Garrett’s criminal investigation.

And investigators had discovered something in his financial records that nobody expected.

A life insurance policy.

On me.

Purchased eight months earlier.

May you like

For five million dollars.
