Chapter 5 - The Secret Maya Never Knew She Carried

Tatum wanted to reject the idea immediately.
Maya was seven.
She collected glitter stickers.
She hated broccoli.
She slept with a stuffed rabbit named Captain.
She didn't possess secrets belonging to criminal organizations.
But Declan wasn't saying Maya consciously knew anything.
The answer went back to Lena.
Years earlier, Lena had worked not only as an interpreter but as an advocate for deaf patients, immigrants, and witnesses navigating the legal system.
That work had placed her near people who spoke freely around her.
They underestimated her.
Some assumed an interpreter was invisible.
Others assumed deaf clients couldn't understand what was happening around them.
Lena learned otherwise.
Over the years, she discovered financial connections between organized crime, corrupt contractors, and city officials.
She kept records.
Then she discovered someone was looking for them.
Before she died, she divided the information and hid it.
Declan had searched for years but never found the final piece.
Tatum stared at him.
Why didn't you tell me?
Because your mother wanted you outside this world.
Yet you've watched my daughter.
Because other people eventually found Lena's name.
Tatum hated that the answer made sense.
Then she remembered something.
Her mother had left Maya a music box.
It seemed strange at the time.
Maya was deaf.
The antique box had never worked properly.
Yet Lena had specifically written in her will that it should eventually belong to her first grandchild.
Tatum had kept it.
It was in storage.
Declan understood immediately.
They needed to retrieve it before Briggs did.
Marcus objected.
Too dangerous.
Declan insisted.
Tatum insisted harder.
An hour later, they reached the storage facility.
The lock on Tatum's unit had already been cut.
Someone had beaten them there.
Boxes were overturned.
Furniture ripped open.
Photographs scattered across the floor.
Tatum ran toward the back.
The music box was gone.
She nearly screamed.
Then she saw something beneath an overturned blanket.
Captain.
Maya's old stuffed rabbit.
Tatum picked it up.
A memory struck her.
Years ago, Maya had broken the music box while playing.
Tatum had removed the inner mechanism and thrown the wooden shell away.
But Maya had cried until Grandma Lena took the mechanism and "fixed" Captain with it.
Tatum looked at the rabbit.
There was a tiny seam along its back.
She opened it.
Inside was the old music-box mechanism.
Declan carefully removed the cylinder.
Hidden inside it was a microSD card.
Tatum stared.
Her mother had hidden evidence inside a toy belonging to a child who hadn't even been born yet.
Back at a secure property, Marcus opened the files.
They contained financial ledgers spanning nearly two decades.
Names.
Dates.
Transactions.
Police officers.
Judges.
Businessmen.
Briggs.
Vale.
Councilman Cole.
And one name that made Declan go pale.
Patrick Morrow.
Declan's father.
Tatum looked at him.
Declan stared at the screen.
His father hadn't simply known about the corruption.
He had helped build it.
Worse, the files revealed something about the explosion that had taken Declan's hearing and killed his brother.
It hadn't been an accident.
Patrick Morrow had ordered it.
Declan's brother had planned to expose him.
Declan had survived by chance.
For years, Declan believed rival criminals had killed his brother.
Now he knew the truth.
His own father had done it.
Tatum watched the realization break through decades of control.
She reached for his hand.
Declan looked at her.
No words.
No signs.
None were needed.
Then Marcus opened one final encrypted file.
LENA_REED_LAST_STATEMENT.
There was a video.
Tatum's mother appeared on screen.
Older.
Tired.
Alive in a way that made Tatum's heart ache.
Lena signed directly toward the camera.
Tatum translated silently in her head.
If you're watching this, they found me.
Tatum covered her mouth.
Lena continued.
Declan, if you survived, don't become your father to defeat him.
Declan's eyes filled.
Then Lena said something neither of them expected.
Tatum, if this ever reaches you, I'm sorry. There is one person you must never trust.
The video glitched.
Returned.
Lena signed a name.
Tatum's blood ran cold.
Yousef.
At that exact moment, the security alarm went off.

And somewhere inside the supposedly safe building, a door opened.
