Chapter 1 - The Widow Who Was Supposed to Disappear

The first thing I saw when I opened my eyes at the hospital was a police officer standing beside my bed.
The second was a familiar leather briefcase resting on the visitor's chair.
It belonged to my husband's attorney, Thomas Whitaker.
And judging by the expression on his face, he hadn't come to discuss my medical bills.
"Mara," he said quietly. "Before we talk, I need you to understand something. Daniel knew his family might try to hurt you."
I stared at him.
"What?"
Thomas glanced toward the officer.
"Your husband left instructions. Very specific instructions. They were to be opened if anyone attempted to force you into surrendering your inheritance."
My throat tightened.
Daniel had been dead for six weeks.
For six weeks, I had slept on his side of the bed because mine still smelled faintly of the perfume Evelyn wore when she visited. I had eaten dinner standing at the kitchen counter because sitting across from an empty chair felt unbearable.
And now this man was telling me that my husband had anticipated something like this?
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because Daniel made me promise not to open this envelope unless certain conditions were met."
Thomas reached into his briefcase.
He removed a thick cream-colored envelope sealed with dark blue wax.
Across the front, in handwriting I would have recognized anywhere, were five words.
FOR MARA. IF THEY HURT HER.
I started crying before he broke the seal.
Inside was a letter, a flash drive, and a photograph of Daniel standing beside an unfamiliar older man in front of the quarry.
Thomas unfolded the letter.
Then he hesitated.
"Would you prefer to read it yourself?"
My injured shoulder was strapped against my chest. My remaining hand trembled so badly that I could barely hold the paper.
"Please," I whispered. "Read it."
Thomas adjusted his glasses.
"My dearest Mara. If you're hearing these words, then I was right about my family. And if I was right, there is something you need to know about my death."
The hospital room seemed to tilt.
Thomas continued.
"I did not leave you my share of the quarry because I wanted you to become a wealthy widow. I left it to you because you are the only person I trust to expose what Evelyn and Grant have been doing there."
My heartbeat began racing.
The officer straightened.
Thomas turned the page.
"For seventeen months, I investigated financial discrepancies in our family business. What began as missing payments led me to something much worse. The quarry was being used to conceal illegal transactions through falsified subcontractor invoices. Grant was responsible for the paperwork. My mother authorized the transfers."
I covered my mouth.
Daniel had told me his work was stressful.
He had mentioned an audit.
He had even started coming home later than usual, sometimes sitting silently in the driveway before entering the house.
I had assumed he was exhausted.
I hadn't known he was afraid.
Thomas stopped reading for a moment.
"There's more, Mara."
I nodded.
"Three weeks before my death, I confronted Grant. He threatened to destroy everything I had built if I reported him. My mother demanded that I sign my ownership over to him. I refused."
A cold feeling spread through my stomach.
Daniel had died in a car accident on a wet highway.
His vehicle had supposedly lost control near a construction entrance.
The investigation had concluded that poor weather and excessive speed were contributing factors.
But Daniel never drove fast in the rain.
Never.
He used to tell me that arriving five minutes late was better than not arriving at all.
Thomas read the final paragraph.
"If anything happens to me, do not trust the accident report until you speak with the man in the photograph. His name is Samuel Reed. He was the quarry's former safety supervisor. He knows what happened the night I discovered the missing records."
Thomas lowered the letter.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, the officer asked, "Mr. Whitaker, where is Samuel Reed now?"
Thomas looked at me.
"That's the problem."
He placed the photograph on my hospital blanket.
"Samuel disappeared four days before Daniel died."
A nurse entered to check my blood pressure, but I barely noticed her.
All I could see was my husband's smiling face.
And the stranger standing beside him.
Then Thomas reached for the flash drive.
"Daniel also left a second instruction," he said.
"What instruction?"
Thomas swallowed.
"He wanted me to tell you that the original quarry records aren't on this drive. The drive contains copies and a map to where he hid the originals."
"Where?"
Thomas looked directly into my eyes.
"The old farmhouse."
My breathing stopped.
"The farmhouse where they tried to kill me?"
He nodded.
"More specifically, Daniel wrote that the evidence was hidden somewhere nobody in his family would willingly look."
I thought about the orchard.
The wet grass.
The stone wall.
The abandoned well.
And suddenly, I remembered something.
Three months before Daniel died, he had returned from his mother's property with mud on his boots. When I asked where he'd been, he smiled and said he'd been fixing something that had been broken for years.
At the time, I hadn't questioned it.
Now I understood.
I grabbed Thomas's sleeve.
"The well," I whispered.
He frowned.
"What?"
"Daniel was at that well three months ago."
Thomas went completely still.
Then his phone vibrated.
He looked at the screen, and the color drained from his face.
"What is it?" I asked.
He turned the phone toward the officer.
It was a message from an unknown number.
A photograph of Evelyn and Grant standing beside a black SUV.
Beneath it were seven words.
WE KNOW SHE SURVIVED. WHERE IS SHE?
And attached below the message was something that made my blood run cold.
A photograph of my hospital room.
Taken from outside the partially open door.
Whoever had sent it was already inside the building.
