Chapter 10 - The Empty Chair

That Thanksgiving, I hosted dinner.
My choice.
My invitation.
My rules.
Mom came early.
Jessica brought pies.
The children decorated the table.
There was one empty chair.
My grandfather’s.
Nobody sat there.
Not because I prohibited it.
Because everyone finally understood.
Respect didn't require explanation anymore.
During dinner, Mom raised her glass.
“To Emily.”
I shook my head.
“To all of us.”
Jessica smiled.
Mom corrected herself.
“To learning.”
That I accepted.
After dinner, Jessica helped wash dishes.
“You know what’s weird?”
“What?”
“I used to think boundaries meant you were angry.”
“And now?”
“I think they mean you want a relationship that can survive.”
I handed her a plate.
“Exactly.”
My phone buzzed.
Orders.
I had to leave earlier than expected.
Old Jessica would have looked disappointed.
New Jessica asked:
“What do you need?”
I smiled.
“Nothing.”
She pointed at me.
“That's not an answer.”
I laughed.
“Can you close the house?”
“Yes.”
“And check the dock?”
“Yes.”
“And—”
“Emily.”
“What?”
“I'll ask before I invite twenty people.”
We both laughed.

The joke didn't hurt anymore.
That was how I knew healing had started.
