Chapter 14 - The Wedding Video That Destroyed Everything

Our wedding videographer called me on a Thursday morning.
His name was Marcus Reed.
He sounded nervous.
"Mrs. Mercer, I know this is unusual, but I think there's something you should see."
I sat upright.
"What is it?"
"I was reviewing the raw footage from your wedding because my company received a request for additional copies."
"From whom?"
"Someone representing the Mercer family."
My stomach tightened.
Marcus continued.
"While checking the files, I found a recording from one of the secondary cameras. It captured a conversation during the reception."
"Between whom?"
"Your husband and his father."
I closed my eyes.
"Please send the details to my attorney. Preserve the original files."
"I already made a backup."
"Thank you."
That afternoon, Rachel arranged to examine the material.
The video began innocently.
A secondary camera had been positioned near a side corridor outside the ballroom.
Guests passed in elegant evening clothes.
A waiter carried champagne.
Someone laughed offscreen.
Then Victor appeared.
Adrian followed him into the corridor.
Both men were still wearing their wedding attire.
The camera's audio had captured enough of their conversation to understand the subject.
Victor looked irritated.
"Did she sign the authorization?"
Adrian shook his head.
"Not yet."
"Why not?"
"Because she reads everything."
Victor exhaled sharply.
"Then make her trust you."
Adrian looked toward the ballroom.
"She's my wife now."
"Exactly. Start acting like a husband."
The next few seconds made my chest tighten.
Adrian lowered his voice.
"I told you I don't want her blamed if this falls apart."
Victor stepped closer.
"You're becoming sentimental."
"I'm serious."
"So am I."
Then Victor said:
"The foundation's exposure doesn't disappear because you developed feelings for the girl."
Adrian looked visibly distressed.
"I never agreed to hurt her."
Victor's expression remained cold.
"You agreed to finish the arrangement."
A guest approached the corridor.
The conversation ended.
The video continued for another minute.
Then Adrian returned to the ballroom.
Seconds later, the camera captured him standing beside me as we prepared to cut our wedding cake.
He wrapped his arm around my waist.
Kissed my cheek.
Smiled for the photographer.
I watched myself laugh.
I watched myself look at him with complete trust.
It was one of the most painful experiences of my life.
Maya quietly stopped the video.
"Claire?"
I couldn't speak.
Rachel placed a tissue beside me.
I stared at the frozen image.
My wedding dress.
The roses.
The crystal chandelier.
My husband's hand resting against my waist.
A perfect photograph built around an imperfect truth.
"Can this help?" I finally whispered.
Rachel nodded.
"We'll need to review provenance, consent, context, and admissibility. But it is certainly important material."
Marcus provided the unedited source files and confirmed the camera setup.
Our legal team made sure the recording was preserved without unnecessary alteration.
Meanwhile, the foundation's independent review had uncovered additional financial discrepancies.
The board placed Victor on temporary leave from his leadership position while its investigation continued.
He responded by accusing the reviewers of bias.
Several newspapers covered the dispute.
Adrian stopped appearing publicly with his father.
For the first time, the Mercer family's image of perfect unity was visibly collapsing.
Then Victor did something unexpected.
He requested a private meeting with Natalie.
Through attorneys, she declined.
He sent flowers to Eleanor.
She returned them.
He offered Maya a substantial payment to resolve what he called the "unnecessary marital escalation."
Maya forwarded the communication to Rachel and laughed so hard she nearly spilled her coffee.
"He really does think everyone has a price."
I looked at the wedding video again.
"Apparently."
Two days later, Adrian contacted Rachel.
He wished to withdraw the statement alleging I had known about Bennett Advisory Services.
He also wanted to provide additional information concerning his father's records.
Rachel explained that any such cooperation would need to proceed through the appropriate legal channels, with independent representation for Adrian.
That evening, I received one final personal message from my husband.
I watched our wedding video.
I finally understand why you'll never forgive me.
I read it once.
Then placed my phone facedown.
May you like
Forgiveness was no longer the question occupying my mind.
The question was whether the truth could survive everything Victor intended to do to bury it.
