Chapter 5 - The Story Ethan Wanted Everyone to Believe

By Monday morning, Ethan’s version of events had already begun spreading.

Richard saw it on television from the hospital waiting room.

A local reporter stood outside Caldwell Digital Solutions.

Sources close to Ethan claimed the Easter incident involved a “private marital dispute.” Ethan’s attorney said his client denied harming Emily and suggested Richard had escalated the confrontation.

Richard switched off the television.

Rebecca sat across from him.

“Don’t respond publicly.”

“He’s lying.”

“I know.”

“Then why stay quiet?”

“Because this isn’t a television argument.”

Richard looked toward Emily’s room.

Rebecca continued.

“We protect Emily. We preserve evidence. We let investigators do their jobs.”

Richard hated it.

But she was right.

Inside Emily’s room, something unexpected was happening.

Emily was becoming angry.

For years fear had controlled her.

Now hearing Ethan publicly reshape what happened had awakened something else.

“He always does this,” she said.

Richard sat beside her.

“What?”

“He decides what everyone is allowed to believe.”

Emily asked for her laptop.

Rebecca initially hesitated, then agreed as long as nothing potentially relevant was altered.

Emily opened an old email account Ethan did not know she still had.

There were messages from years earlier.

One sender appeared repeatedly.

Claire Bennett.

Richard asked, “Who’s Claire?”

Emily stared at the name.

“Ethan’s former girlfriend.”

Before Emily and Ethan met, Claire had dated him for almost three years.

Ethan claimed Claire was unstable.

Jealous.

Obsessed.

Emily had believed him.

Now she wasn’t sure.

The emails were old attempts from Claire to contact Emily.

Emily had never answered.

One message read:

I know you don’t know me. I’m not trying to interfere with your marriage. I just need you to know that if he starts telling you everyone else is the problem, please don’t believe him.

Emily covered her mouth.

Another message:

Keep your own money.

Another:

Don’t let him separate you from your family.

And finally:

If you ever need help, I’ll believe you.

Emily began sobbing.

Richard put an arm around her.

“I thought she was crazy.”

“You believed what you were told.”

“I ignored her.”

“You were being manipulated.”

Emily looked at Rebecca.

“Can we find her?”

Rebecca nodded.

Claire answered the phone that afternoon.

When Rebecca explained why they were calling, silence followed.

Then Claire asked one question.

“Is Emily alive?”

Richard closed his eyes.

That question said enough.

Claire agreed to speak with investigators.

She had saved old messages too.

Threats.

Controlling emails.

Photographs.

Nothing alone proved everything Emily alleged.

Together, however, they began showing a pattern investigators could examine.

But Ethan had another move ready.

That evening, Rebecca received a call.

Someone had anonymously sent a package to a local news station.

Inside were supposed medical documents suggesting Emily had a history of instability.

Emily stared at Rebecca.

“That’s impossible.”

Rebecca agreed.

The records contained inconsistencies.

But online, people were already sharing screenshots.

Emily’s private nightmare had become public entertainment.

Richard stood beside the hospital window, furious.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Nobody spoke.

After several seconds, a distorted male voice said:

“Colonel, you should have stayed retired.”

The call ended.

Richard slowly lowered the phone.

Emily saw his expression.

“What?”

Richard looked toward Rebecca.

For the first time, the attack had moved beyond Emily.

Someone was trying to frighten him.

And Richard suspected Ethan had made one serious mistake.

He believed fear would make Richard disappear.

Instead, Richard had spent his entire adult life learning what to do when fear arrived.
